Aston Villa 1 West Ham 1 - Matt Maher analysis
Transcript
00:00Good evening from Villa Park where it finished Villa 1 West Ham 1. A frustrating evening or afternoon for Villa who made a flying start going in front in just the 8th minute through Jacob Ramsey but were then unable to sustain their momentum and eventually pegged back by Emerson 20 minutes from time.
00:21In between the most significant moment of the match Tyrone Mings sustaining a knee injury in a challenge with Mohamed Kudos. Mings down in pain, received a treatment for several minutes, tried to play on but realised he couldn't play on soon after.
00:39Big concern obviously for Mings who left the field in tears, fairly devastated. Then came back out for the second half to sit on the bench smiling and was on the field at the end shaking hands with opposing players.
00:53The early indication is that the injury is not too serious which is great news, would be great news. Obviously Mings only just back from a lengthy 14 month lay off so he's kind of the last player who deserves to suffer such misfortune.
01:10But for Villa in the meantime serious problems obviously at the back. Esri Konza the only fit senior centre back, obviously Diego Carlos was sold last week, Pau Torres has a broken foot. So today you saw Luca Dean moved into a central defensive role with Ian Martinsen coming on the pitch and what Dean did about as well as he could, Villa's defence was nowhere near as strong as it would have been had Mings stayed on the pitch and the team as a result lost a bit of structure and shape.
01:38Huge game obviously coming up in the Champions League on Wednesday, Villa are unlikely to get a player in in time so it's going to be a big headache for Ume Emery as to what he chooses to do that day.
01:50Juan Feuth seems to be playing now on Villa's radar at Villarreal, Emery knows him from his time at Villarreal and said based on his post match press he was asked about him and effectively said he'd be a good fit for Villa so that seems the road that Villa are going to go down but they desperately need another defender in now that means he's going to spend at least a little time on the sidelines.
02:14The inference from Villa obviously are now going to be criticised for allowing Diego Carlos to depart before they got a replacement in as Carlos had basically decided he no longer wanted to play for the club so plenty of talking points on the pitch and off the pitch today at Villa Park. A draw felt like a defeat because obviously Villa were leading.
