00:00We're here at the Stag & Scotch in Newport and Darren, this is your baby?
00:03It is, yes.
00:04How are you sir?
00:05Yeah, tired.
00:06Tired?
00:07All good.
00:08Well, I mean, we'll be doing this on New Year's Eve, so there's no early finishes for you tonight.
00:13Not at all, I'm afraid.
00:14No, there's a train through till just after midnight, so...
00:16Yeah.
00:17Do you get a little tipple at midnight?
00:18I'll have a tipple, yeah, I'll have a week's Scotch whisky, yes.
00:20Good man.
00:21Darren, this place looks awesome.
00:23There's loads of old authentic signs and quirky little items.
00:28Is that just a bit of a hobby of yours, collecting those over the years?
00:31Yeah, I've been collecting them for about seven years, with one eye on doing something like this at some stage or other.
00:35So I've been trading with the signs, and old collectibles, vintage, it's very much me really.
00:40And I wanted something that was points of interest on every wall for people to enjoy whilst having a drink or two.
00:45Yeah, and these little seating areas, it's proper old school-y vibe pub, isn't it?
00:50Yeah, it's all reclaimed, repurposed, and pretty much everything you see in here has been repurposed really.
00:54So these are old pews, which we've made into booths by creating backs on them and stuff.
00:58Yeah.
00:59So yeah, everything has been repurposed or upcycled.
01:03So how long have you been trading here now then?
01:05So we started on the 20th of December, so just over a week.
01:08Yeah.
01:08So we collected the keys and we did a five-week turnaround.
01:11Five weeks you put this together?
01:13Yeah, that's five weeks from picking the keys up to opening the doors.
01:16I now even more understand why you said you're tired.
01:19Yeah, it's been a great project to do.
01:23Creating something, I think, where there's been a slight hole in the market for our personal town.
01:27Yeah.
01:27You know, there's lots of great pubs and stuff out there.
01:30This is a little bit different with it being small.
01:34Designed the way it is with these nice intimate booths, some nice open seating areas, some nice leaning areas at the back.
01:39Yeah.
01:40And an amazing range of cascades, primarily, that feature on the bar top, which change sometimes twice a day.
01:47You know, three times a day, a three-foot literally can be that quick.
01:50And the little bit of time I've spent in here, it's a real nice friendly pub, isn't it?
01:54Just at the bar there, people are coming in, having a chinwag, saying hello, that kind of vibe.
01:59Yeah, it is, yeah. We're very fortunate.
02:00I think the people make the pub.
02:02You know, you put the infrastructure in place, you can put the cosy areas in place,
02:06but the people that come through the doors make the pub for you.
02:08Yeah.
02:08But yeah, some great people. We're very fortunate.
02:11Good following, really.
02:12And opening times then? When are you open?
02:15Once we get into the new year and we get to trading normally, we'll be kind of 3.30, 3.00 till 9.00, straight 10.00 in the week.
02:2212.00 to 11.00 o'clock Fridays and Saturdays, and Sundays will be 12.00 to 6.00.
02:26Awesome work. Well, Darren, you've created something rather special here, I think.
02:30So well done, sir, and good luck with your future business.
02:32How you doing, guys? Who have we got here?
02:34Graham.
02:35Graham, and?
02:36Sophia.
02:37So, you live in Newport now?
02:39Yeah.
02:39And at Shiffnal before this, there was a few pubs in Shiffnal, weren't there?
02:43Yeah.
02:43What do you think about this place, though? It's a bit special, isn't it, really?
02:46It is, yeah. Lots of real ales, lots of choice, amazing atmosphere.
02:51Yeah.
02:51Really great.
02:52And what have you been sipping on today, then? Is that three tons you've had?
02:55Yes, triple X.
02:56Do you approve?
02:57Yes, 10 out of 10.
02:58Good stuff. And Sophie, what's your favourite tipple at the minute?
03:02Stout.
03:03Stout?
03:03Yes.
03:04How long have you been into your stouts, then?
03:07Half a year.
03:07Yeah, yeah.
03:09Cool. Fair play. I like my stouts, yeah, yeah.
03:12Thank you, guys. Cheers. Thank you.
