00:00Hey Canada, welcome to Good Bites Takeout, I'm Alex and this is the show where I make
00:11the most of the fact that I can't go out to eat, so instead, I take it to go.
00:14I'm on St. Catharines Street West, walking to what's often referred to as Fuchinatown.
00:18Sammy's Soup and Dumplings has a loaded dumpling menu, but the thing that has people driving
00:23in and lining up is their xiaolongbao, soup dumplings.
00:27Xiaolongbao is a very famous local food in the Shanghai area, now even all over China,
00:34and it has a long history, since a hundred years ago in China.
00:38My family owns the same kind of restaurant in China, it's very popular, people love it
00:43very much.
00:44I'm thinking, why not bring this kind of food to Montreal, now the dumpling is a very popular
00:50food in Canada.
00:51Today I present three flavors, so the first, juicy pork, you know it's a very traditional
00:57flavor, and if you don't know what to order, you can take the juicy pork, it's a good choice.
01:03The second is lamb coriander, you know it's taste is unique and sufficient flavor, mix
01:10the lamb and the fresh coriander together.
01:13The last one is pan fried curry and beef, this one we created by ourselves, and it's
01:19popular and if you are a fan of curry, you will love it for sure.
01:27Alright, I'm going to kick things off here with the original, the sweet pork, and the
01:36reason is, this is probably the one that a lot of people who are trying this out for
01:39the first time are going to go with.
01:41I'm going to tell you right now, I've today found out that I've been eating these dumplings
01:44completely wrong for years.
01:47What you're supposed to do, is you're supposed to pick up the dumpling, with your chopsticks,
01:52place it in the spoon, that's step one, take a bite out of this.
01:56Just enough to let the juices pour out.
01:59You drink it in, you get all that flavor, then you place it back down, and now, the
02:04trick is, see that opening?
02:06You dunk it in, and you scoop up some sauce, and that's what you eat.
02:12Listen, it might be the wrong way to do it, but I enjoy the Neanderthal way of eating
02:21it.
02:22Pop it in my mouth, it tastes good.
02:23Alright, moving on to dumpling number two.
02:26I've got lamb and coriander.
02:27Now, what I'm going to do here, though, is I'm going to mix the two methods, the right
02:30way and the wrong way, and I'm going to try to come up with something new.
02:33Maybe you've done this before, maybe I'm a genius.
02:36I'm going to bite the top off, leave the soup inside, and I'm just going to dunk this over,
02:42and make a little volcano of flavor.
02:45Come on.
02:47Mmm.
02:48Mmm.
02:49Oh my god, how have I never done this before?
02:53As much as I love coriander, and I love lamb, and this is very good lamb, the way it blends
02:57together with the juices and the flavor of the coriander is awesome.
03:00The sweet pork that they had in that original one is just out of this world, and I'm appreciating
03:05that a little bit more, having tasted this.
03:07It's still good.
03:08Alright, to close things off now, the third dish is going to be pan-fried beef and curry
03:11dumplings.
03:12A little bit different from the soup ones, there is no liquid inside, and I don't know
03:16about you, but I've never had curry inside of a dumpling before.
03:20I'm willing to give it a shot.
03:24I'm not really, like, blown away by the beef and curry.
03:27It's doing something.
03:28Oh, you know what?
03:29There's actually a lingering flavor.
03:30Hold on.
03:31It's growing on me.
03:33You know what it is?
03:34I'm so used to the juices from the soup dumplings blowing up in my mouth, and just being a quick
03:39hit right away.
03:41This is a slow burn.
03:42You have one, it sits on your tongue.
03:44You have a second one, the flavors start expanding, and the one thing that's standing out the
03:48most to me is that the curry is super subtle.
03:51If you're not crazy about curry, this might actually be good for you to try, just because
03:56it's just the tinge of it.
03:57You're just getting a tiny little taste of it, but at the same time, if you're absolutely
04:00crazy about curry, you're not going to get a whole lot of it here.
