00:00We heard from the police superintendent in New Orleans, Anne Kirkpatrick.
00:04She talked about, yes, I have it, 3.15 a.m., a pickup truck driven by a man plowed into
00:11a crowd of people in this very busy tourist area, we can imagine.
00:16Many were celebrating New Year's.
00:19The French Quarter, famous for colorful buildings, wrought iron balconies, familiar to many people.
00:27She said a death toll of 10 confirmed at the moment, which might change, and more than
00:3430 injured.
00:35She said the motive of this driver, it appeared to be intentional.
00:40She said, quote, this man was trying to run over as many people as he could, and when
00:45the vehicle came to a stop, he started firing at police officers, and two were injured.
00:58She also said, quote, he was hell-bent on creating the carnage and damage that he did.
01:04We also briefly heard at that press conference from an FBI officer saying they were taking
01:09over the investigation.
01:12So far, not defining it as a terrorist attack in FBI terms, at least, but also investigating
01:21a possible improvised explosive device, and when a reporter tried to get more information
01:26about that, they were told no questions being taken at this moment.
01:31Right.
01:32It does seem like there still is a lot of confusion over what exactly happened.
01:35I mean, earlier we heard the mayor of New Orleans saying that this was a terrorist attack.
01:40One thing we do know for sure is that this event did happen just before a major sporting
01:44event in New Orleans.
01:45Tell us about what was happening in the city last night and what was planned for today.
01:49Well, yes, the French Quarter is a real hub for New Year's celebrations.
01:55So that would have drawn a big crowd.
01:57The officials who spoke said that their indications at the moment are among the dead.
02:02It seems to be more local residents than tourists, although that might change.
02:07They also, at the end, the police officer said, still try to enjoy the city, go about
02:12your business.
02:13Do not come, obviously, to this area.
02:16But there's a big American football game going on later today that is still on, and we'll
02:22do everything we can to protect the safety of people at that venue.
02:27And it is a big moment of the year for New Orleans.
02:31Soon there's going to be the annual Mardi Gras celebration that, again, draws people
02:35from all over the country and all over the world.
02:38And in February, New Orleans is actually hosting the Super Bowl, which is the biggest American
02:44football game there is.
02:45So this is the last thing the city needs right now.
02:49And you could see on the faces of those officials, they were shaken by this.
02:55And as you heard, the mayor mentioned she had been in contact with both the state governor
02:59and the White House about the possible broader implications of this.
03:04I'm sure there'll be an investigation into who was this attacker?
03:08Was he acting alone?
03:10What was his motive?
