A major clean-up operation is under way in parts of Greater Manchester, Lancashire and Cheshire after heavy rainfall overnight into New Year's Day. Hundreds of residents were forced to evacuate from their homes after floodwater reached the second floor of their apartment building, and cars were left submerged in rainwater on the A555 Manchester Airport relief road in Handforth. 00:00During the night, we lost power in the apartment, so we presumed there was a power cut. I went
00:21to get up for work the next morning and looked out the window and all the cars were submerged
00:26in water and the fire brigade came to the door, knocked on the door and said that we
00:32couldn't get out of the building because the water was up to the second floor. So we were
00:37advised to stay in the building and then they brought water in by a raft to give everybody
00:43water and eventually at four o'clock in the afternoon, we got evacuated out of the building
00:48and told that obviously, you know, it's unsafe, you better go somewhere else and we were put
00:52up in a hotel by the council for a night.
