A major incident has been declared in Greater Manchester after severe rainfall on New Year’s Day caused widespread flooding. Homes have been evacuated, train lines and roads have closed, and a canal has collapsed following heavy rain. The Met Office says some parts of the North West saw almost a month’s worth of rain within 48 hours. Report by Jonesia. 00:00These New Year's Day floods occurred at just about the worst time possible. Peak flows
00:26occurring at five or six in the morning on New Year's Day, when most people were asleep
00:32after celebrating New Year.
00:56I've served for nearly three decades now and I've never managed the multi-agency response
01:02working with police and councils and volunteers from the Red Cross and mountain rescue and
01:06a whole range of people where we need to rescue a thousand people in a day from their homes
01:10so it is fairly unprecedented.
01:26I've lost my car, somewhere to live. It's hard, it's hard for people. I mean they're
01:34saying we could be back in two days. I mean I used to manage buildings, this is going
01:39to take months.
