00:00This is RSP, another inspiring Filipina.
00:04This is the heart that we will talk about today.
00:08But before that, let's watch this first.
00:13Meet Sally Ria Malayan, a Filipina who's not just saving lives, but also changing them.
00:20From being a top-notcher in the 2010 nurse licensure exam in the Philippines,
00:25she went to Norway in 2012 as an au pair.
00:28But her journey didn't end there.
00:31Because in 2013, she also established her charity organization,
00:36The Filipino Helping Society,
00:38to help those affected by the Yolanda earthquake
00:41and to fight for the independence and hope of Filipinos and other minority groups in Norway.
00:48From saving lives in the ER to building bridges in the community,
00:52Sally really proved that Filipinos can shine anywhere in the world.
00:57So let's find out Sally Ria Malayan's story here on She Shines.
01:06And now, we have with us Sally Ria Malayan.
01:10Good morning and welcome to Rising Shine Filipinas.
01:13This is Prof P, together with Meiji.
01:16Happy New Year!
01:19Happy New Year and good morning, Prof P,
01:22and to all the other hosts and viewers.
01:27Good morning.
01:28Happy New Year, Sally.
01:30So can you tell us, your story is very interesting,
01:33from being a top-notcher and then you went to Norway.
01:36How did your Filipino Helping Society start in Norway?
01:40And what was your inspiration for establishing this organization?
01:46Okay, so,
01:47so,
01:50long story, so in 2010,
01:54I passed the board exam, made it to the top.
01:57And then 2012,
01:59I moved to Norway.
02:00And the OPR, if you're not familiar,
02:04this is a cultural exchange program.
02:08So I went to Norway,
02:10and I have a host family of Norwegians.
02:13And there,
02:14I presented the culture of Filipinos to them.
02:18And in return,
02:20I also learned how Norwegians live.
02:24But it wasn't easy,
02:26because my aim was to become a nurse,
02:30or practice my nursing profession here also.
02:34But it's not that easy,
02:36it's not that easy to recognize,
02:39even if you're a top-notcher,
02:40even if your grades are good,
02:44it really starts at the beginning.
02:47So,
02:49that was 2012,
02:51and it was very challenging.
02:53The chemistry of the family wasn't good,
02:59but then, in 2013, in November,
03:03Yolanda, or Hayan,
03:06was struck by the Philippines, our country.
03:09And,
03:10even though my situation was difficult,
03:12because I wasn't practicing nursing,
03:15it was frustrating,
03:18at the same time,
03:20we had a goal,
03:21but we didn't achieve it.
03:23And,
03:25we also had a lot of expectations,
03:27back home.
03:28But,
03:29when I found out what happened to our countrymen,
03:33that's when I started to realize,
03:35yeah,
03:36the things I've been through,
03:38the challenges I've faced,
03:39now,
03:40this is nothing compared to people
03:44who lost their homes,
03:45who lost their loved ones.
03:49So, that's where I started.
03:51Four days after,
03:52in November 8,
03:53in Hayan, or Yolanda,
03:55on November 12,
03:57the so-called
03:59Tapit Kamay-Ibangan na Pilipinas was established.
04:01And then,
04:02gathered help,
04:04even though I didn't have a network here yet,
04:07my main focus was to send help.
04:11Actually,
04:12we were able to gather help,
04:14not only in Norway,
04:16but also in Denmark,
04:17neighboring countries here in Scandinavia.
04:21Also,
04:22in other Asian countries.
04:24And then,
04:25I flew back to the Philippines,
04:27first time.
04:29The same,
04:30before I spent a year here in Norway,
04:34to really personally give the help.
04:37And we were able to help 1,000 families
04:40during that time.
04:41So,
04:42that was just the beginning.
04:45And,
04:46I'll just stop here,
04:47because I can keep talking.
04:49So,
04:51and then,
04:52later on,
04:54on my journey,
04:58I was trying to practice,
05:02so I studied,
05:03until,
05:05the organization,
05:08it was active,
05:09the year after Yolanda,
05:11and then,
05:12there was a slight pause,
05:14because there were a lot of requirements here.
05:17So,
05:19that's where I focused,
05:21and from there,
05:22like a cultural exchange program participant,
05:26I became a student,
05:27because I needed to study first,
05:29to know how to become a nurse here in Norway.
05:32Then,
05:33I got a job,
05:34became a permanent resident,
05:36then became a citizen,
05:38Norwegian citizen.
05:40And there,
05:41along the way,
05:42on that journey,
05:45I saw how difficult it was.
05:48So, I said,
05:50it's not just our fellow Filipinos
05:53who need help,
05:55our fellow Filipinos here in Norway also need it.
05:59Not because you're in another country,
06:02that's okay,
06:03it's already solved.
06:05There are still a lot of trials and tribulations,
06:08and it's more difficult now,
06:09because you have no one with you,
06:10you don't have your family members to support you,
06:14and adjustments to the weather,
06:16adjustments to,
06:18you know,
06:19integrating with the country,
06:21and there are still a lot of trials,
06:25that I've been through and succeeded in.
06:30Looking back,
06:31in 2020,
06:32when the pandemic happened,
06:33I said,
06:34I'm established,
06:35I'm okay,
06:36I'm married,
06:37and I said,
06:38this is really my passion.
06:39So,
06:40I'll go back,
06:41and this time,
06:42it's not just our fellow Filipinos in the Philippines,
06:44but also our fellow Filipinos here,
06:46and other minority groups.
06:49There are a lot of achievements, right?
06:51That's the history.
06:54So, I'll just say,
06:55stop me,
06:56because we can go straight here.
06:57Yes, because,
06:58you know what,
06:59there are so many milestones
07:00that your organization was able to accomplish,
07:03for being called as
07:05Kapit Kamai Ibangon ng Pilipinas,
07:07from Yolanda,
07:08one of the most disastrous happenings
07:10that we have here in the country.
07:12Now,
07:13we want to know,
07:14in so many ways,
07:15to help you,
07:16and the execution of your help,
07:18what is your dream
07:20for FHS,
07:21in the coming years?
07:23How do you see the future of your organization?
07:26And what are the steps that you will do
07:29to achieve these?
07:33My dreams,
07:34actually,
07:35is to be able to sustain ourselves.
07:37Because,
07:38it's like a punch in the stomach,
07:40because you will help your fellow countrymen,
07:42and
07:43we need, of course,
07:44fundings,
07:45and
07:46you know,
07:47by the grace of God,
07:48the government of Norway
07:49is able to see
07:50the efforts,
07:51that's why we will give points,
07:53and we will be able to help a lot here,
07:55because,
07:57there,
07:58of course,
07:59not only Filipinos
08:00are here,
08:01there are also immigrants.
08:02So,
08:03to be able to give enough
08:07attention,
08:08enough support,
08:09that's important.
08:10And,
08:11I don't have a dream
08:13for the organization,
08:14but,
08:15to be able to continue to help.
08:17Because,
08:18as long as there are
08:19our fellow countrymen here,
08:21and other minorities in Norway,
08:24the need continues.
08:25So,
08:26to be able to sustain,
08:27to last,
08:28until it passes,
08:29maybe,
08:30to the next generation.
08:32And,
08:33to spread,
08:34because,
08:35what we have in FHS
08:37is a helping cycle.
08:39So,
08:40we will help you
08:41with what you need,
08:45like the integration,
08:46language,
08:47because it's Norwegian,
08:48right?
08:49And,
08:50in return,
08:51you just give what you have.
08:53Because,
08:54like I said to you,
08:55frustration,
08:56when I went to Norway,
08:58I have skills,
08:59I have what I'm good at,
09:01but,
09:02I was set aside there,
09:03because,
09:04I wasn't approved.
09:05So,
09:06that's what we do.
09:07Whatever you have,
09:08bring it from our country.
09:10Okay,
09:11bring it out,
09:12let's use it,
09:13in our programs here.
09:15And,
09:16so that,
09:17let's say,
09:18we don't neglect you.
09:19And,
09:20in return,
09:21we will give you
09:22a lot of opportunities.
09:23Then,
09:24that's it.
09:25So,
09:26it becomes a cycle.
09:27And,
09:28it reintroduces
09:29help,
09:30benefits,
09:31not just to our volunteers,
09:32but to other people.
09:33So,
09:34that's it.
09:35That's what we do.
09:36We maintain the relationship.
09:39Because,
09:40our motto is,
09:41to help our second home.
09:44This is our second home,
09:45so,
09:46we are family here.
09:48We will help as much as we can,
09:50and,
09:51we will also help others.
09:52So,
09:53that's it.
09:54It's fun, right?
09:55It's like you have a support group,
09:57an instant support group.
09:58Yes,
09:59and the way of teaching is wide.
10:00Yes,
10:01it's wide,
10:02but,
10:03it's also about integration.
10:04Not just to our fellow Filipinos in Norway,
10:05but to our fellow Filipinos here in the Philippines.
10:08For that,
10:09thank you.
10:10Thank you very much
10:11for sharing your inspiring story,
10:14Sally Ria Malayan.
10:16God bless you,
10:17and may you live long.
10:18Thank you, Sally.
