00:00President-elect Donald Trump's influence and stranglehold on Congress will be tested

00:05when incumbent House Speaker Mike Johnson seeks re-election on January 6th,

00:09after the 119th Congress begins work.

00:12He can only afford to lose a couple of votes among his party mates,

00:16some of whom will hold him to account for his role in funding the government over the next three months,

00:21and ignoring calls from debt hawks in the GOP to put a cap on foreign debt loans.

00:30A new U.S. Congress set to start Friday.

00:33President Trump will return to D.C. and to the White House,

00:37and we will have Republican control of the Senate and the House.

00:40Things are going to be very different around here.

00:42But Speaker of the House Mike Johnson's leadership position is in jeopardy

00:47after his deal last month with Democrats to keep the government funded and open.

00:53Mr. Johnson caught a lot of fire from his GOP colleagues,

00:58and he has an extraordinarily limited margin for his majority, just a handful of people.

01:06President-elect Donald Trump posted his support for Johnson on social media Monday,

01:12saying the speaker was, quote, a good, hardworking, religious man.

01:18But Republican representatives Chip Roy and Thomas Massey

01:23have already stated their doubts about his leadership.

01:27And Trump ally and advisor Steve Bannon called on Republicans to remove Johnson from leadership.

01:34Clearly, Johnson's not up to the task, and he's got to go.

01:37Two years ago, at the start of another Congress,

01:40Republican Kevin McCarthy faced similar challenges to his bid for the speakership.

01:46A speaker has not been elected.

01:49He was finally elected on the 15th round of voting.

01:54Meanwhile, House Democrats have expressed concern about the influence of billionaire Elon Musk

02:01after he stalled the government funding bill by posting his concerns about it on social media.

02:07Musk has been tweeting out all kinds of lies and misinformation about even what was in the package.

02:12Change is also coming to the U.S. Senate as Republicans take the majority from Democrats,

02:19and Mitch McConnell steps away from party leadership for the first time in 18 years.

02:25John Thune of South Dakota will now be the top Republican.

02:30We have a mandate from the American people, a mandate not only to clean up the mess

02:35left by the Biden-Harris-Schumer agenda, but also to deliver on President Trump's priorities.

02:43Traditionally, the first 100 days of a new presidency and Congress are a time for an ambitious legislative agenda.

02:51He's going to hit tariffs very hard.

02:53He's going to focus on the border and executive orders related to immigration and immigrants,

03:00particularly from Mexico and Muslim countries.

03:04And then he's going to work on any compromises he can to get through the legislative agenda

03:09on things affecting the economy, groceries, as he likes to call it.

03:13The U.S. House of Representatives is also scheduled to certify the results of the 2024 election next Monday,

03:21confirming Donald Trump won the presidency.
