00:11Together, the world's 10 richest people are worth $1.9 trillion, up from $1.8 trillion

00:20Seven of the 10 are richer than they were a month ago.

00:23These numbers are according to Forbes as of January 1st, 2025, at 12 a.m. Eastern Time.

00:29These prices fluctuate routinely, so these net worths may change on a daily basis.

00:39Elon Musk kicks off the new year not only as the world's richest person, but also the

00:43only billionaire Forbes has tracked in nearly four decades to be worth more than $400 billion.

00:50Musk begins the new year worth $421.2 billion, per Forbes' estimates, a $91 billion increase

00:58since December 1st.

01:00The big jump in his fortune came after SpaceX agreed to buy back Insider's shares in a deal

01:05valuing the rocket company at $350 billion, a deal first reported by Bloomberg.

01:12The company had previously been worth $210 billion.

01:16Musk founded SpaceX in 2002, runs it as the CEO, and owns an estimated 42% stake in the

01:22company.

01:23The new valuation made SpaceX the most valuable private company in the world, more than TikTok

01:28parent ByteDance, payments firm Stripe, or chat GPT creator OpenAI.

01:35Musk also runs EV maker Tesla, and owns stakes in social media firm X, AI firm XAI, and tunnel

01:41company The Boring Company.

01:44Musk, who started 2024 worth an estimated $251 billion, has gained extra media attention

01:51since Donald Trump won the U.S. presidential election in November.

01:54Trump named Musk the co-head of a new advisory body, the Department of Government Efficiency,

01:59or DOGE, set to reduce government spending and increase efficiency.

02:04Jeff Bezos comes in as the world's No. 2 richest, up from No. 3 at the start of December

02:092024.

02:11The Amazon founder and chairman, who owns about 9% of the company, got about $10 billion

02:17richer in the past month, as shares of the e-commerce giant rose about 5%.

02:22He starts off 2025 worth an estimated $233.5 billion, about $188 billion less than Musk.

02:32NVIDIA CEO and co-founder Jensen Huang joins the top 10 richest for the first time at the

02:38start of the month.

02:39He's ranked No. 10 and worth an estimated $118 billion, mostly due to his stake in the

02:45chip designer, whose shares rose 171% in 2024.

02:50NVIDIA ended the year with a market capitalization of $3.28 trillion, making it more valuable

02:57than Microsoft, but not as valuable as Apple.

03:01Huang overtook Spain's Amancio Ortega, founder of clothing retailer Zara, and its publicly

03:06traded parent company, Inditex.

03:08Shares of Inditex weakened in the past month.

03:12Most of the names on the top 10 are familiar names if you've been following along.

03:16One notable name not on the list is Bill Gates, who dropped out of the top 10 richest on October

03:211st, after Forbes obtained new information about a significant contraction in his fortune.

03:27Nine of the 10 richest people in the world are Americans, and all are men, with fortunes

03:31over $117 billion.

03:35The biggest loser of this group was Oracle chairman Larry Ellison, whose fortune fell

03:39by $17.2 billion during the month, to an estimated nearly $210 billion.

03:46Ellison fell to No. 3 richest in the world, from No. 2, at the start of December.

03:51Rounding out the top five are at No. 4, Meta CEO Mark Zuckerberg, whose net worth is $202.5

03:58billion, and at No. 5, the CEO and chairman of luxury goods group LVMH, Bernard Arnault,

04:05whose net worth is $168.8 billion.
