00:00The 150th year of IMD is coming to an end on January 15, 2014.
00:28In this, IMD has arranged a series of lectures in which I was invited for the 27th lecture.
00:35It is my good fortune that DG IMD invited me to give a lecture.
00:45I am very happy to give this lecture.
00:49When IMD was established, there were two main activities of IMD for the country.
00:58One was atmospheric study and the other was seismological study.
01:05The National Centre for Seismology was established in August 2014.
01:10Before that, there was a seismology unit in the Indian Meteorological Department.
01:19This was the first major earthquake in India in 1897.
01:31Its magnitude was 0.7 in Ceylon.
01:34There were many casualties in Assam and Ceylon.
01:42After that, the British government established the first Permanent Seismic Observatory in Kolkata in 1898.
01:58After that, there was analog equipment.
02:02By the year 2060, we had 40-42 stations.
02:08By the year 1970, we had more than 50 stations.
02:15All the equipment was analog.
02:18It used to take a lot of time to do the analysis.
02:21However, we used to provide detailed information about the earthquakes in India.
02:30After 2014, we decided to establish a separate seismology centre for India.
02:41The IMD think tank and the authority of the Ministry of Earth Sciences decided to establish a solitary National Centre for Seismology in India.
02:56In today's presentation, we have shown how we became digital with analog equipment in 1898.
03:10We used to do manual monitoring.
03:13Today, we are doing real-time monitoring.
03:16We have many automated algorithms.
03:20All the information we have provided so far is authentic for the public.
03:26We have demarcated the data we have created so far.
03:31We have demarcated the data we have created so far.
03:38We have shown how the IMD has played an important role in bringing NCS to such a high level.
03:49We have also shown the relationship between multidisciplinary studies and seismology.
04:04For example, what is the relationship between monsoon-induced earthquakes and monsoon-induced earthquakes?
04:10We have shown how to track cyclones in cyclones like Amphan.
04:15We have shown how to track cyclones in cyclones like Amphan.
