00:00On a scale of Brat to Demure, how chronically online were you in 2024?
00:05In honor of 2024 coming to a close, I wanted to take a look at two explosive trends that happened in 2024.
00:12Brat and Demure.
00:14The two trends, though aesthetically opposite of one another, have something to say about how we perceive ourselves and portray ourselves online.
00:22Charlie's Brat exploded in June 2024.
00:25There was a significant focus on the messy party girl, the almost immoral girl.
00:30And since Charlie is everywhere, and so Julia, everybody flocked forth and really tried to embody what it means to be Brat.
00:37So much so that she tweeted about the 2024 presidential nominee, Kamala Harris.
00:42And this showed everybody that everyone is chronically online.
00:46Kamala's Campaign X account set this as their header.
00:49And you can't forget the Apple dance created by Kelly Heyer.
00:53Thousands of users online were doing this dance.
00:56And then Charli XCX and Troye Sivan and friends started doing it too.
01:01Charlie even shared her Brat manifesto.
01:04And this proved that the concept for the album was very well thought out.
01:07This proved that the album was very intentional when it came to the messy, unapologetic themes that she wanted to convey.
01:13And right after a very Brat June and July, Jules LeBron came out with this video about how to be demure and modest and respectful in the workplace.
01:22The gist of the video is about being mindful, being delicate, being graceful.
01:26And the same way Brat was embodied by users worldwide, so was demure.
01:31This demure way of thinking was completely oppositional to Brat.
01:35And yet it snaked its way into our minds and our speech before Brat Summer was even over.
01:40And demure is pop culture history at this point.

01:46And like all things trending, everyone has their aha moment of being chronically online.
