00:00I think when you walk into a set like this, you know, where they've already
00:10created relationships, you know, this was a really tight set and a tight crew.
00:16They've worked together, they've created this incredible, you know, show and
00:22they've created incredible relationships with each other. So when you walk into it,
00:28you know, you are embraced in that kind of warmth but also you're quite aware
00:33that everyone knows their job really well and it's all great that you like them but if you
00:39don't do your job then, you know, it's very disappointing for yourself. So I had a lot of
00:46fun on this set but I was very very aware that anything that I felt like there was a day in
00:53which I felt I didn't perform very well, it really hurt. It hurt so much only because of the
01:00level of, you know, commitment that everyone had to the story and so I didn't feel it clouded,
01:08you know, my being a fan clouded my process in any way. In fact, it made the process even
01:16more sacred in the sense that I really wanted to give it my best, you know, because this is,
01:23I knew this is a rare thing. It's not going to come again in my life to play a part like this.
01:35I don't know I'd ever kind of think like that. The only thing I can say that I have already said it
01:43because of the rise of the OTT to the liberation that writers have
01:51and the directors and the producers that liberty comes to us. I mean
01:59who will write Paatal Lok for a film? I don't think
02:04and
02:12meme culture.
02:26Media and life is so fast in these things.
02:32I think people pick it up very fast.
02:42But they don't think in that way that this is the reason for the rise of the start-up.
02:46I'm just happy that I get good stories after that. Because of Paatal Lok,
02:56I was considered a better actor. I generally say that Sudeep bhai's pen made an ordinary actor
03:35I think it's a start to take training in a shoot.
03:45If you can't be part of that process, I think
03:52most of the time if it's not happening, it's because that unit is not one.
04:04I think that's a very interesting thing.
04:06So I think the biggest part of my training is that
04:11my basic is that I have to fit in that puzzle.
04:15I have to fit in that unit where I have to work.
04:18I don't have to feel that if I'm an actor, the rest of the people have to make it for me.
04:26I really enjoy that feeling that I'm a part of that process.
04:31So if it's good, it's good for everyone.
04:34If it's bad, it's bad for everyone.
04:38I don't want to be the only one responsible for a bad film.
04:42Because the rest of the people are also a part of it.
04:43And I don't want to be the only one responsible for making a great film.
04:47Because the rest of the people are also a part of it.
04:50So that's my training, mentally.
04:53Preparation-wise, I was talking to Suri Bhai about teaching people acting.
05:02I said it's a very difficult job.
05:04Because it's a very different job.
05:06But I was saying that most of the time, I think 70-80% of the time,
05:13an actor has to be really aware of what's going on.
05:19What's happening, whether it's on a physical level or a mental level.
05:22I'm talking about the character.
05:24And when you're shooting a scene, half of it is fixed with common sense.
05:28If you have an awareness of what your character is and who you are.
05:33That becomes a foundation.
05:37The rest of the 20% is, can you add something new to it?
05:41Can you make something better?
05:44Which we call the magic touch.
05:48That happens later.
05:50The basics are very basic.
05:52Do you remember your lines?
05:54Do you know where you have to stand?
05:57When do you have to move?
05:59These are the basic requirements.
06:01Do you have to walk from here to there in this scene?
06:04Do you have to walk from there to sit here?
06:05Do you have to throw the utensils?
06:07Do you have to drink water here?
06:09These are the basic things.
06:12If your body is not in your control, your mind is not in your control,
06:16you're confused with so many things.
06:20And you're still thinking about what your line is going to be.
06:25It comes down to these basic things.
06:28If you remember your lines well, then you'll be able to flow with them.
06:34But if the actor keeps thinking about what his next line is,
06:37or waits for you to finish your line and then he'll start talking on that line.
06:43So now, your mind is occupied.
06:46You don't have the awareness of anything else.
06:49You don't have a glass next to you,
06:50you don't know if it can fall,
06:52you don't know if you can give it a reaction.
06:54Because you're all the time thinking about your lines.
06:57I don't know, I'm talking too much.
07:00If I may add, he's really the most aware actor I have worked with.
07:04And that is the first quality of his that comes to my mind
07:09when I think of him, is awareness.
07:11When he walks onto a set,
07:13he's completely aware of the props that are there,
07:16where the light is, where the camera is,
07:19where the other actor is going to be,
07:20what the other actor is doing, what he's saying.
07:26He's fully present.
07:27He is not one of those actors who is distracted,
07:30who is looking at his phone,
07:31or he has got 10 other things in his mind.
07:33He is fully there, 100%.
07:36I remember when we were shooting the climax of season 1,
07:40it was Hathiram and Sanjeev Mehra,
07:44and Hathiram goes to Sanjeev Mehra's office
07:46and he confronts him and tells him the whole story.
07:49And so we blocked the scene,
07:52and then we were like, okay, let's shoot.
07:54And we start shooting.
07:56And before he starts talking,
07:57there was a little prop, one of those pelicans
07:59that you keep on the desk,
08:01and which go up and down.
08:04And before he starts talking, he says,
08:06I'll tell you a story, which was a line.
08:07And then he does this to the pelican,
08:09and it starts going like this.
08:11And then he starts talking.
08:12And when he finished his lines is when he stopped it,
08:15and he got up and left.
08:17And I was like, man, we never told him to do that.
08:22When did he find that out?
08:23What he did, the sharp actor that he is,
08:28he walked onto the set while we were blocking
08:30and rehearsing, we were doing our own thing.
08:32He walked around looking at the entire office,
08:34so that when he's walking into that set,
08:37he's not, oh, okay, he's sitting here,
08:40I'm sitting here.
08:42And what are the things?
08:43He's aware of everything that is there
08:44and how to use them and how to use them
08:46to his advantage and how to use them
08:48to the advantage of the scene.
08:50It's a very rare, very beautiful quality to have.
09:00Articulate this, you know,
09:01because I think it's really changed over time.
09:04And it changes with every project.
09:06But I relate to what Jaideep is saying.
09:08For me, at the moment, I am most open when I'm relaxed,
09:16you know, to possibilities,
09:18how a scene can play out in a hundred different ways
09:22when I'm relaxed.
09:24And so all the work is before.
09:27I asked all my thousand questions to Sudeep,
09:30tried to change his dialogues, well-written dialogues,
09:34made those cardinal mistakes.
09:36I need to feel like, you know,
09:38I'm part of something, the people.
09:42And because I came out of two years
09:44of being a caregiver to a parent,
09:47and I realized in those two years
09:50how much I love what I do
09:52and what it feels like when it's taken away, you know.
09:56And so when I came to the set of Paatal Lok,
10:00after that two year, I was in love with people, with life.
10:06And it was great.
10:08It was really great to just be on a set
10:10where you care for every person on that set.
10:14And I know that it doesn't come from a place
10:17of just liking people,
10:20because that's not the person I thought I am.
10:23It comes from really believing in a script.
10:26I think when you read something
10:28that makes you that happy,
10:31to just read,
10:33the excitement of putting your body
10:38to tell that story, to be a part of that story,
10:42the process for me was just one
10:46absolutely powered by a sense of
10:49absolute excitement and love for the story.
10:53So I think my sense of my process in this one,
10:56I had to learn, do some dialect training
10:59because she's from Nagaland, she's Assamese
11:02and, you know, she works in Nagaland.
11:05So that Ahomya slight undertone with the Nagamese,
11:09I mean, those dialect things,
11:11these things help me a lot.
11:13Certain technical things which are unattainable
11:15when I start a project,
11:16gives me something to feel like I'm working
11:19because otherwise you don't trust your process
11:20when a script is so good.
11:23If that Nagamese wasn't there,
11:24I would have felt extremely nervous
11:26because everything is done,
11:28Sudeep has done all the work,
11:29so I have to just show up and flow, you know.
11:32And thank God, I felt like I had, you know,
11:35something to do in terms of homework.
11:39But the process is really was being aware.
11:41I mean, you have actors like, you know,
11:43Jaideep to, you know, play off in a scene
11:47and a story like this,
11:49where you know you are saying one line,
11:52but that line has so much in it.
11:55So just the pleasure of saying it,
11:56like it means very little,
11:59but it means so much.
12:01You know, just the pleasure of being able to just,
12:04it's small things, you know,
12:06being able to enjoy the small big things.
12:09And I think, yeah, just being relaxed, being open
12:12and just knowing you're surrounded by people
12:15who you really like and respect actually.
12:17It makes a huge difference
12:19because these are long processes, you know.
12:22What type of actors do you like?
12:26In everything we've talked about,
12:28it's important to say that
12:30we are also very, you know,
12:32excited and waiting for the response
12:33of Patal Rabbi season two.
12:37We have worked very hard on this.
12:39I mean, many people have worked very hard on this.
12:41And as Sudhir bhai said a while ago,
12:44that the base starts from that
12:46that what had already been done,
12:47we don't wish to do it again.
12:48I mean, he didn't want to do it again,
12:49and we got that liberty there.
12:50It's such a small thing and I have seen the trailer with their hands for the first time.
12:57So I am a little zoned out.
13:00I am just waiting for how people will receive it.
