00:00Thank you. Nice to meet you as well. It's an honor, you know. What does Paul say?
00:14Strength and honor. It's definitely a major honor.
00:17What did you learn?
00:22I learned countless things every day on this production.
00:30I think one of the great joys of this job is that every single project, every story is completely different.
00:37It's unique. And so if you're open to it, you're learning something new every time.
00:43Denzel is a master. He's one of the greatest actors, and working with him was just an utmost pleasure.
00:53It's hard to put into words those lessons, but I will say there's a quality of focus and commitment and play
01:04that you witness and get to engage in with someone as brilliant as he is, and it was just a real joy.
01:18Yeah, you want to stay open to all of it and keep finding new ways, show things that have never been shown before.
01:26What does Carkell mean to you?
01:31Yeah. Carkell and Gaeta are the twin emperors of Rome. Rome is not so happy with them at the outset of this film.
01:40They're not so happy themselves. They're kind of rough and tumble guys.
01:49They love each other, they hate each other, and they have Lucilla almost imprisoned at the outset.
01:59They're trying to use her to garner more approval and to rule Rome with more popularity.
02:10That's how it begins, and then a lot starts to challenge that, and things get even messier and more exciting from there.
02:19What do you think is Carkell's biggest strength?
02:25I think they can count on the continued legacy of the first film.
02:33There is no one more equipped to direct Gladiator 2 than Sir Ridley Scott himself.
02:39He's been thinking about this story for over two decades. He's wanted to make it, but he was only going to make it if he could do it right,
02:45and I think he just really delivered in terms of making a film that continues and follows the first one,
02:55and also speaks on its own terms as a standalone film.
03:00What do you think is Carkell's biggest strength?
03:05I think you trust. I think you have to trust your director.
03:08As an actor with the maestro Ridley, he carries that legacy, and our work and our focus, you just give into it.
03:22I guess I'll tell you this. I felt the responsibility every day, and you try and use that feeling as a catalyst to do your work.
03:38We talked about all different kinds of influences. Sid Vicious, Johnny Rotten.
03:43We even talked about the cartoon characters Beavis and Butthead.
03:47It was very wide-ranging references in terms of the people that inspired our portrayals of Carkell and Gaeta.
