00:44TV personality Vic Soto files a complaint against filmmaker Daryl Yap on Thursday, January
00:499, for a teaser of the upcoming film The Rapist of Pepsi Paloma, where his name was mentioned.
00:55The complaint, filed at the office of the prosecutor in Muntinlupa City, includes 19
01:00counts of violating Section 4 of Republic Act No. 10-175 or the Cybercrime Prevention
01:05Act of 2022.
01:07In Muntinlupa, court has issued a writ of habeas data, ordering Yap to stop posting
01:11the film's teasers and promotional materials.
01:14He is also barred from releasing the film.
01:17The video, posted on Vin Sentiment's Facebook page on January 1, depicts a character asking
01:22Paloma if Soto was one of her rapists, to which she allegedly replied, yes.
01:27Soto says the complaint was not personal, but about holding irresponsible individuals
01:31accountable, especially on social media.
01:34Yap, who is directing the film, previously revealed the movie would revisit Paloma's
01:38rape case and death.
01:40In 1982, Paloma accused comedians Vic Soto, Joey DeLeon, and Richie DeHorsey of rape,
01:46but later dropped the charges.
01:48In 1985, Paloma was found dead in an apparent suicide by hanging.
01:52Yap is the director behind the controversial movie made in Malacanang, criticized for historical
01:57revisionism.
02:00A Social Weather Station survey reveals 4 in 10 Filipinos support the impeachment of
02:04Vice President Sara Duterte.
02:06The survey shows 41% of Filipinos agree with the impeachment, while 35% oppose it and 19%
02:13are undecided.
02:14The support for the impeachment is highest in Luzon with 50% and lowest in Mindanao,
02:19her home region, with 22% agreeing and 56% disagreeing.
02:24The Visayas region had the largest share of undecided respondents at 24%, while 40% agreed
02:30and 33% disagreed.
02:32The survey also reveals 46% of Filipinos believe the unexplained spending of confidential intelligence
02:38funds by the Office of the Vice President and the departure of education could be grounds
02:42for impeachment.
02:44Commissioned by STRAT-based Research and Intelligence, the survey was conducted from
02:48December 12 to 18, 2024.
02:52The Philippine Coast Guard says another China Coast Guard ship was sailing close to Zambales
02:56after a so-called Chinese monster ship left the area.
03:00PCG spokesperson Commodore Jay Tariella says on Wednesday, January 8, the monster ship
03:05known as CCG 5901 left Zambales and was last monitored some 90 nautical miles away but
03:11still within the Philippines' Exclusive Economic Zone.
03:14He adds the PCG monitored the CCG 3103 as it traveled from Guandong province to Zambales,
03:21seemingly replacing the monster ship's position.
03:23On Tuesday, January 7, a Chinese military chopper harassed the PCG's BRP Cabra while
03:29the latter was monitoring the monster ship.
03:32Tariella says the Chinese ship's movements have been erratic, ruling out any argument
03:36of innocent passage.
03:38In previous radio challenges, the CCG aboard the 5901 told the Cabra it was performing
03:43law enforcement duties on the jurisdictional waters of the People's Republic of China.
03:48Beijing claims almost all of the South China Sea, including parts that are in the Philippines'
03:52Exclusive Economic Zone.
03:56The Anti-Graft Court, Sandigan Bayan, acquits former Vice President Jejomar Binay, former
04:01Makati Mayor Junjun Binay, and several others of graft and falsification charges.
04:06The charges are related to the Makati Science High School building project.
04:10It involves irregularities in two contracts, a P17.45 million design contract and a P1.3
04:16billion construction contract.
04:18The Sandigan Bayan Special 5th Division acquits the Binays and their co-accused of seven counts
04:23of violating the Anti-Graft and Corrupt Practices Act and three charges of falsifying public
04:27documents.
04:29The court rules that the evidence presented by the prosecution was insufficient to prove
04:33the allegations of conspiracy, graft, and falsification.
04:37The prosecution relies on testimonies from witnesses, including former Senator Antonio
04:41Trillanes IV, former Makati Vice Mayor Ernesto Mercado, an engineer, and a lawyer.
04:47However, the court found these testimonies lacked personal knowledge and were based on
04:51inferences.
04:52The claims of kickbacks and corrupt practices were also not supported by solid evidence.
04:59More than 100,000 people were ordered to evacuate from Los Angeles on Wednesday, January 8 as
05:04raging wildfires break out, killing at least five and destroying thousands of homes.
05:09Fierce winds fueled the fire, which have burned unimpeded since they began on Tuesday, and
05:13hindered firefighting operations.
05:16State officials say none were contained of the five separate fires that burned in L.A.
05:20County.
05:21The Palisades and Eaton fires burned thousands of acres, with initial damage estimates exceeding
05:26$50 billion.
05:28This marks one of the most destructive fires in Los Angeles' history.
05:32The fire struck at an especially vulnerable time for Southern California, which has yet
05:36to see significant rainfall since October.
05:39Officials say some hydrants have already run dry, especially in the upscale Palisades area,
05:44home to many film, television, and music stars.
05:47Scientists say the fires erupting outside of the traditional wildfire season mark the
05:52latest in weather extremes as global temperatures continue to climb.
05:58And that's today's wrap.
