In 1939, beloved British singer and actress Gracie Fields is at the height of her fame, adored by the nation as she battles cervical cancer. As World War II breaks out, Gracie, defying her fragile health, performs for British troops, much to the disapproval of her husband, Monty Banks, an Italian-born film director. When Italy joins the Axis, Monty faces internment in Britain, and the couple makes the difficult decision for him to move to America while Gracie stays behind to fundraise in Canada. Misunderstood as a betrayal by the public, her reputation falters, but she ultimately redeems herself with a moving performance tour on the battlefields.
