00:00Everything is ready in Venezuela for the sworn in of President Nicolas Maduro for the 2025-2031
00:17term this Friday.
00:22In the United States, the death toll rises to 10, and more than 10,000 structures burned
00:26after the active fires in Los Angeles since last Tuesday.
00:32A research revealed that the death toll from Israel's genocide of war against the Palestinian
00:36people is far higher than the current international estimates.
00:48Hello welcome to From the South, I'm Luis Alberto Matos from the Resus Studios in Havana,
00:53Cuba.
00:54We are here with the news, and we do so in Venezuela.
00:56All is being ready for the inauguration this Friday 10th, January 10th, of President Nicolas
01:02Maduro for his third consecutive term.
01:04For that we are going straight live to Caracas in Venezuela with our correspondent Belen
01:08de los Santos for all the details of what is happening today on this occasion.
01:13Hello Luis, exactly we are here in Caracas, exactly from the Yaguno Bridge in downtown
01:22Caracas.
01:24And this is very early in the morning, a regular Friday morning, but this sector of the city
01:30is with high expectations because just a few blocks away is going to take place today the
01:35presidential inauguration of President Nicolas Maduro, who was elected on July 28th, presidential
01:42elections, and today, January 10th, is the presidential inauguration.
01:47That means that the third mandate of President Maduro begins officially today as he is swearing
01:53in before the National Assembly.
01:55So let's recall a little bit how we get to this day.
01:59So according to the constitution, the authorities from the National Assembly, the new authorities
02:04for the new legislative period that were reinstated and reconfirmed on Sunday are taking President
02:12Maduro's oath, and this is happening as it always happens in the National Assembly that
02:17is just a few blocks away.
02:19So this is a normal day here in Caracas with all the security measures, of course, that
02:26mark this important day.
02:28The streets otherwise are calm.
02:30We come from a day of demonstrations that was yesterday in Caracas.
02:35So Thursday, as you know, as we have been reporting here from Venezuela, it was a day
02:41of peaceful demonstrations.
02:43People took to the streets.
02:45We had reports from all over the city, also from all over the country, with people coming
02:51out in support of this institutional day.
02:55One of the most important things to keep in mind is that this swearing in ceremony, this
03:00presidential inauguration, is a key step in reaffirming the institutionality and just
03:09the normal peace of the city, of the country, something that has been on the spotlight in
03:15Caracas internationally, and this is a very important thing to point out from here.
03:20That is why we are out on the streets.
03:22That is why we are reporting.
03:24Of course, any swearing in ceremony has a lot of media attention, but we know that with
03:29Venezuela that takes a particular twist, and it's important to reinstate that here in Caracas
03:36we are out and that everything is going according to normal.
03:41The demonstrations yesterday were massive, and what is happening today has to do with
03:46the beginning of this third six-year mandate for President Nicolás Maduro.
03:52Also an important thing to point out is the international presence at this event.
03:57So one of the things that President Nicolás Maduro for the past month, since the elections
04:03up to this moment, has been reinforcing is the idea of making Venezuela the epicenter
04:10of an international fight against fascism, against the far right.
04:14Of course, this have been tough months for Venezuela in terms of the media and international
04:21pressure from the violent actions after the presidential elections onward, and a way to
04:28respond to this international pressure has been, on the one hand, and the internal front,
04:34to go back to the people, to the communes.
04:37So reinforcing the popular power here in the country with the popular consultations,
04:43with the true sense of democracy that is the democracy of the peoples, with different political
04:48activities that have to do with taking back that power that is really the mandate of the
04:54people, and also on an international level just gathering all the international support
05:01in the face of these far right attempts and international pressures from media campaigns,
05:07for example, and the international anti-fascism congress, for example, that have been going
05:13on are gathering here today now again for the swearing-in ceremony, and that is the
05:20international anti-fascist festival that is also going on.
05:24So we have activities on the streets.
05:26We are, of course, this is very early in the morning, but Caracas is expected to have all
05:31the people back again on the streets today.
05:34We have sound checks, we have posts waiting for the people to arrive.
05:38This is about to be yet another popular party, as it was yesterday as well, and the international
05:45guests are also here to continue their anti-fascist festival.
05:50So that is happening here in Caracas, we will continue reporting along the day.
05:55We are here to bring you the latest on Venezuela in this presidential inauguration.
06:00Luis, I go back to you now.
06:11Thank you, Belén, for all those details.
06:13We will stay, of course, in touch to continue following up everything that is happening
06:16in Venezuela in this important day of the inauguration of President Nicolás Maduro.
06:21Let's continue with our news in this context of the preparations today.
06:24The governor of the state of Tashira, Freddy Bernal, announced the temporary closure of
06:28the border with Colombia from this Friday, January 10th, through Monday, January 13th.
06:37Greetings Venezuela, greetings Tashira.
06:39We have worked a lot to achieve in this beautiful land of Tashira, guarantee security and peace.
06:46A state that for many years has suffered the siege of paramilitary Colombian groups.
06:52On this occasion, we have information of an international conspiracy to disturb the
06:58peace of Venezuelans, and especially in this area on the border.
07:03In that sense, I make a call to understand of all social sectors, farmers, businessmen,
07:10entrepreneurs and the people that normally go and come from Venezuela and Colombia, that
07:15understand why we are going to close the border of Colombia from 5 a.m. today until
07:225 a.m. on Monday.
07:26Be certain that we have absolute control of the state, and we will guarantee, under any
07:32circumstance, tranquility and peace of all the people of Tashira.
07:40The chairman of the State Duma of the Federal Assembly of the Russian Federation, Vyacheslav
07:43Volodin, is already in Venezuela to represent his nation at the swearing ceremony of re-elected
07:49President Nicolás Maduro.
07:51Venezuela and Russia share extensive bilateral ties in multiple areas of common interest.
07:55Therefore, the Russian representation in the country is paramount for both nations.
08:00A Russian head of state, Vladimir Putin, was one of the first leaders to congratulate the
08:04triumph of President-elect Maduro on July 28th.
08:08Later, they met in the framework of the BRICS summit held in the Russian city of Kazan,
08:12where Putin referred again to the electoral triumph of his counterpart and commended the
08:16Venezuelan people.
08:28In Caracas, Venezuela, the World Festival of Anti-Fascism International began on Thursday.
08:34More than 2,000 delegates from five continents participated in the first day of the event
08:39that started with a speech by the Executive Vice President, Delsi Rodríguez.
08:42Details for our special envoy, Juno Sunea.
08:48The La Carlota Convention Center received the delegates with music and dance, but in
08:53her opening speech, Executive Vice President Delsi Rodríguez warned of the importance
08:58of the Anti-Fascist International.
09:00It is the time that humanity has called to fight together against fascism.
09:08There is no other moment, there is no other day, because if we postpone this struggle
09:12for one day only, there might be no more humanity, no peoples left.
09:16Only the corporations will remain that have taken over the states and the lives of human
09:20beings.
09:26The Anti-Fascist International initiative emerged in November 2024 with the aim of creating
09:31a powerful global structure against fascism, neo-fascism and Zionism.
09:36The festival today represents continuity.
09:39Seeing comrades that we met in November being able to exchange, see what different groups
09:43have been up to, the different solidarity activities in Britain.
09:47We've organized a protest outside the Guardian in solidarity with Palestine and Venezuela,
09:52so it's been good to tell people about that.
09:54According to Delsi Rodríguez, Trump is a promoter of international fascism.
09:59Hence, beyond Venezuela, others took the anti-fascist event by heart.
10:04Fascism is a threat.
10:09There is a threat in the north that makes fun of changing names that have been in place
10:13for more than 500 years, like the Gulf of Mexico.
10:23The World Anti-Fascist Festival is an organization to generate the tools that help us defend
10:28ourselves and resist or combat this attack.
10:35For Mexico, the solution is turning southwards, says Garcia.
10:39In the afternoon, the festival established working groups for various sectors, from youth
10:43to social movements, from native peoples to the group of parliamentarians.
10:48One was dedicated to women in the anti-fascist struggle, building an emancipatory feminism.
10:54We have been in a meeting trying to advance, let's say, from feminisms, which are multiple,
11:01which are plural, which are diverse, and that we are in all territories and on all continents.
11:06In what way from our political action as feminists we are going to contribute and we are going
11:10to fight against fascism and neo-fascism around the world.
11:17Another sub-event was the Third International Communication Congress that achieved concrete
11:21results as its participants explained.
11:26The main proposal and conclusion of this first day is the creation of a network of popular
11:31communicators to fight against fake news, to spread our truths in the face of the attack
11:36of imperialism.
11:39Despite partly long trips to get to Caracas, participants were optimistic and grateful.
11:45So I'm very happy and congratulations and my compliments to have organized this first
11:49day that we are tired because we arrived in the night at three in the morning, but very,
11:55very happy.
11:56So thank you so much to the Venezuelan government and to this whole organization.
12:02It has been a pleasure for me and it's a pleasure for me to be here.
12:05The World Festival for the Anti-Fascist International for a New World will continue until January
12:1011th.

12:46Welcome back.
13:05In the United States, the death toll rose to 10 and more than 10,000 structures burned
13:09after the active fires in Los Angeles since last Tuesday.
13:13The latest fatalities correspond to the fire in the city of Palos Aires, an area where
13:17the average property value is around $3 million.
13:21According to the California Department of Fire Protection, to date, more than 11,000
13:25hectares have been burned.
13:26In this regard, authorities have warned that the number of deaths may increase and that
13:31according to professional estimates, the material damage is between $135 and $150 billion.
13:43Recent information has confirmed the existence of a new fire known as Kenneth, which has
13:48quickly spread to some 323 hectares near the border of Los Angeles and Ventura.
13:53Kenneth has generated mandatory evacuation orders as well as considerable damage in several
13:57areas of the city and adds to the wave of active fires since January 7th.
14:02Palos Aires and Eaton fires remain on control, while authorities assure that a fire known
14:08as Sunset has been contained and has not caused major structural damage.
14:13The security strategy of the Government of Puerto Rico and California is showing its
14:19first results, such as the reduction of intentional homicides, the arrest of important criminal
14:25figures and the increase in the seizure of drugs and weapons.
14:29Correspondent in Mexico, Antonio Aranda, has the details.
14:33The Mexican government presented data confirming progress in security matters on the 100th
14:39day of the administration of President Claudia Sheinbaum.
14:44With the preliminary figures we have, we observe a decrease of 16.3% in the daily average of
14:49victims of intentional homicide between September and December 2024.
14:53In this period of government, 7,720 people have been arrested for different high-impact
14:58crimes, more than 66 tons of drugs have been seized, including 1,168 kilograms and 561,000
15:07fentanyl pills, and more than 3,600 firearms have been seized.
15:15In Sinaloa, one of the biggest security challenges, there are also important achievements.
15:22In Sinaloa, a very important effort has been made to reduce violence.
15:26There is still a lot of work to do, but after the increase in homicides that began in December,
15:31today we can observe a containment in the escalation of homicides.
15:36In Culiacan, specifically the reduction of homicides from October to December has been 35%.
15:47The figures also show a significant decrease in femicides and intentional injuries, among
15:53other crimes.
15:57Between September and December we can also see a reduction in all these crimes.
16:01In femicides minus 25.6%, intentional injuries and firearms, shooting in reduction of 19.7%,
16:10in extortion minus 10.6%, all robberies with violence minus 4.7%.
16:21The most important indicator in favor of President Scheinbaum's security strategy
16:26is the reduction in intentional homicides, according to this specialist.
16:33We are on the right track.
16:35On the one hand, the number of intentional homicides, which is the most important indicator,
16:41has decreased in most of the states and on the other hand, 19 of the crimes listed in
16:46the national catalog have also experienced a decrease.
16:55Institutional coordination and the dismantling of criminal protection networks are an important
16:59part of the security strategy.
17:03It seems to me that at the moment there is quite effective coordination not only between
17:08the federal secretariats, the security secretariat, the CEMAR, the SEDINA, but also with the governors
17:16not only to capture the operators, the hit men, but also to dismantle the institutional
17:22protection networks, which seems very important to reduce the political and economic power
17:27of organized crime.
17:33Security report confirms that 74% of firearms entering Mexico come from the U.S. and are
17:39sold to drug cartels.
17:43The Yes to Disarmament, Yes to Peace program will be reinforced by increasing the economic
17:49amount for people who voluntarily turn in their weapons.
17:57Peruvian social movements mobilized throughout the country to demand justice and honor to
18:01the 18 people killed during the massacre of Juliaca in 2023, following the appointment
18:06of Dina Boluarte as president.
18:08Mobilizations followed a call by the National Coordinator of Struggle in response to these
18:12injustices and abuses within the parameters of the crime against humanity.
18:17Those mobilized denounce the inefficiency of the authorities to respond to this case,
18:21despite the fact that the evidence demonstrates the violent acts committed by the Peruvian
18:26security forces, artistic, cultural, and religious activities were carried out during the day
18:31in honor of the victims.
18:37And the Committee of Relatives of the Detained and Disappearing Honduras, COFADEF, presented
18:42an extension of accusations against former military leaders to the Public Prosecutor's
18:46Office.
18:47The coordinator of COFADEVERTA, Otilia Olivia Guifarro, presented the extension against
18:52Romeo Vazquez Velazquez, Venancio Cervantes, and Carlos Puerto, as well as against former
18:58de facto President Roberto Micheletti, for their alleged responsibility in human rights
19:03violations during the 2009 coup d'etat.
19:05The retired generals are specifically accused of the murder of Ezeobet Murillo, considered
19:10a martyr of the Honduran resistance.
19:12In that sense, the case is being expanded to include 10 other people who were injured
19:17during the same day of repression.
19:19We now have a second short break coming up, but before we invite you to visit our YouTube

19:36Final short break, don't go away.
20:02Welcome back.
20:16A research published Thursday in the Medical Journal The Lancet revealed that the death
20:19toll for Israel's genocidal war against the Palestinian people is far higher than the
20:23current international estimates.
20:25Academics estimate that during the first nine months of conflict, the death toll from the
20:29war in Gaza would have been 64,260, significantly higher than the 37,877 deaths reported by
20:37Palestinian authorities.
20:39These studies rely on Palestinian Ministry statistics, an online survey, and social media
20:43obituaries to estimate that there had been between 55,298 and 78,525 deaths from traumatic
20:51injuries in Gaza at that time.
20:53It's important to note that the group of researchers estimated that 59% of the deaths encompassed
20:58women, children, and the elderly, and the figures refer only to deaths from traumatic
21:03injuries without including other causes of death.
21:10The government of the Democratic Republic of the Congo has reaffirmed its commitment
21:14to reclaim areas occupied by the M23 rebel movement after peace negotiations with Rwanda
21:19failed.
21:20Despite mediation efforts from Mangola and other international actors, talks of peace
21:24with Rwanda have stalled.
21:26During a recent press conference, President Felix Tshisekedi emphasized the urgency of
21:30restoring control in the eastern part of the country, where the M23 has captured key towns,
21:35exacerbating the humanitarian crisis and forcing widespread displacement.
21:39The M23 has further destabilized the region, increasing clashes and worsening security
21:43and living conditions in eastern DRC.
