Northern Territory police have arrested a 49-year-old man after a woman was found dead in Alice Springs overnight. A crime scene has been established on the banks of the Todd River, and police are calling for potential witnesses. Reporter Charmayne Allison has more from Alice Springs.

00:09As you can see behind me, police have established a crime scene and they're working to comb
00:13the banks of the river for any evidence which could shed light on what took place in the
00:18early hours of this morning.
00:20Police said they received reports at about 12.20am from a 49-year-old man that a woman
00:25was unresponsive near the river.
00:28Emergency services attended and declared the woman dead a short time later.
00:34Police then attended a nearby location and arrested the 49-year-old man and he remains
00:40in custody.
00:41But they confirmed today that they believe it is a DV homicide.
00:45Police say they believe the woman who was killed, allegedly killed, was the 51-year-old
00:51partner of the 49-year-old man.
00:54They believe the woman was assaulted with a weapon which they have confirmed was not
00:58an edged weapon and they're calling for any witnesses to come forward urgently.

01:06We're doing a lot of work out there with the community and as you see the prisons are full
01:12and overflowing and I expect that will have a follow on to the safety of the community
01:16which is our focus.
01:18Charmaine, this comes just days after another body was found near Alice Springs.

01:27Police say they're still investigating the death of a man whose body was found on a track
01:31near Alice Springs on Saturday afternoon.
01:34Police say they received reports at about 4pm and discovered the man's body near Undulia
01:40Road.
01:41Police say they're still treating the death as suspicious but they don't believe it was
01:45the result of a homicide.
01:47They say they believe it could be drug related as the man was known to police and was seen
01:52by witnesses walking around naked and erratically prior to his death.
01:57But police are waiting for the results of a post-mortem examination which will take
02:01place tomorrow and we'll just have to wait and see what that post-mortem reveals.
