00:01:30Hello everyone, welcome back to Laval, Quebec, the first day of competition at the Skate
00:01:37Canada 2025 National Skating Championships.
00:01:40I'm your host, Ted Barton, in the studios here in Vancouver, and next up, the Junior
00:01:45Synchronized Short Program, and to help me with that will be a veteran synchronized skater
00:01:51turned international consultant, the founder of an organization supporting the growth of
00:01:56synchronized skating worldwide.
00:01:58Please welcome Lisa Carriere, joining us from Montreal.
00:02:01Welcome Lisa.
00:02:02Hi Ted, nice to see you again.
00:02:04Yeah, nice to see you too.
00:02:06We work the World Championships and a couple of Nationals together, I always love working
00:02:10synchronized skating for you, I always find out new things, I forget them too, but I learn
00:02:13them every year, every year out.
00:02:15Wanted to ask you Lisa, of course, similar to other team sports, the team names stay
00:02:20the same, but quite often the players change, how difficult is that and does that happen
00:02:23a lot in juniors where you're getting new skaters every year?
00:02:27Yeah, I think that's a really good point to notice because we always talk about the past
00:02:32history of the teams and how they've been doing.
00:02:34It's not uncommon to see a turnover of about 50% of a team from one year to the next.
00:02:39So while the coaching stays the same, and a lot of the philosophies and the training
00:02:43style of the team will be consistent, the actual skaters on the team can change considerably.
00:02:49So a lot of these teams, when they start their season in April or May, they're really working
00:02:53on unifying their team style, building up to the same skating skill level so that when
00:02:58they come together as a unit, they're all around the same level as far as the skill
00:03:02component goes.
00:03:04We've been working with some of the teams out here in BC and it's so interesting to
00:03:08watch the dynamics, it is very complicated with so many skaters on the ice, it's a wonderful
00:03:12discipline.
00:03:13Let's talk a little bit about what the audience can expect to see in the elements in the Short
00:03:18Program.
00:03:19Yep, so there are going to be five elements to look out for in the Junior Short Program.
00:03:23You'll see an intersection element, which for the Junior Short is going to be a whip.
00:03:27You'll see a move element where all of the teams are going to be doing spirals.
00:03:32We'll see a no hold element, which is a little bit different this year, they're calling it
00:03:36an open block.
00:03:37So you'll see the shape on the ice outlined by the skaters, but there are no skaters in
00:03:44the line.
00:03:45So a lot of space in between those skaters, which makes it challenging to maintain that
00:03:49shape, whether it's a square or a triangle.
00:03:52And of course, they're doing that shape while doing difficult turns.
00:03:55So really hard element this year.
00:03:57We'll see the pivoting element, which is in a block shape and a twizzle element as well.
00:04:02And for those of you in the audience with the SkateBug Radio, you'll be hearing Lisa
00:04:07describe the elements, you'll be able to see those elements on the replay board.
00:04:11So pay attention to that to learn a little bit more about synchronized skating.
00:04:13But most of the audience there are synchronized skaters for today anyway.
00:04:18So it'll be pretty exciting.
00:04:20Always a great crowd, always a loud crowd.
00:04:22Synchronized skating.
00:04:23Short program, Junior, coming up in just a few moments.

00:07:53Welcome everyone to Place Belle, the synchronized skating junior short program coming up in
00:07:58just a few moments.
00:07:59I'm Ted Barton out in Vancouver with Lisa Carriere in Montreal covering this event.
00:08:03And Lisa, it's great to see so many teams there watching their colleagues.
00:08:10And of course, for the senior categories, I'm sure the building will be full.
00:08:14I'm sure these fans have been waiting 10 years to have a synchronized skating national championship
00:08:18return to Quebec, so they are excited to support their teams.
00:08:23It's a big community.
00:08:24What would you say what the number of participants in synchronized skating in Quebec are?
00:08:31I don't even think there's a nationwide number, but I'd say there's got to be over 100 teams
00:08:38in Quebec.
00:08:39Wow.
00:08:40Wow.
00:08:41I think there's 100 teams in Newfoundland or close to 100 teams in Newfoundland as well.
00:08:44Synchronized skating, we don't see it a lot in the West.
00:08:46We're starting to grow out here, but it's a very big discipline here in Canada.
00:08:52And long standing roots in the Quebec and Ontario region as well.
00:08:56We kind of refer to that as the Mecca of synchronized skating.
00:08:59It's where the sport really took off and found deep roots over 40 years ago.
00:09:04And three-time world champions, of course, from Canada.
00:09:09That is amazing.
00:09:11And looking for more this year, it'll be interesting to see what happens.
00:09:14And that will be exciting, not only in the senior category, but also in the juniors.
00:09:20And we'll step aside in just a few moments.
00:09:23The introduction video as we take a look right now at the officials for the technical panel.
00:09:27We'll be back right after this.
00:09:29The technical specialists.
00:09:31Rebecca Silverstein.
00:09:36And Cathy Kennedy.
00:09:41Rebecca Silverstein.

00:10:50Rebecca Silverstein.
00:10:53Rebecca Silverstein.
00:10:56Rebecca Silverstein.
00:10:59Rebecca Silverstein.
00:11:02Rebecca Silverstein.
00:11:05Rebecca Silverstein.
00:11:08We absolutely love having them in this junior division and seeing the programs they come up with each year.
00:11:13Yeah, we've seen a great growth out here in B.C.
00:11:16and the numbers of skaters wanting to join synchronized teams.
00:11:19And we're doing our best to try to encourage that community
00:11:22and get more involved in competitive synchronized skating.
00:11:25Our numbers are growing in recreational and this team is about 12 skaters
00:11:31or about half this team is new.
00:11:33They came out of the singles category.
00:11:34So this is a brand new experience for them.
00:11:36They're excited, they're thrilled, they're trained,
00:11:39and we wish them the very best as they take to the ice.
00:11:44Their program is a tribute to anyone struggling with mental health and feeling alone.
00:11:48They worked with Angela Malorny to channel each skater's mental health journey
00:11:52to bring this beautiful piece together that we're about to see.
00:11:58The final few moments.
00:12:01Few minutes on the ice to warm up.
00:12:03So this is just the team huddle, which they're fortunate to have time to do.
00:12:06Generally, the captain is giving some final words of encouragement to their teammates.
00:12:11Maybe someone's making a joke to ease the tension.
00:12:14But these skaters will have had one short official practice
00:12:18on on the ice right next to this one earlier today.
00:12:21And then they're just getting their blades wet before they take their opening position.
00:12:25And you mentioned a little earlier that the practice ice is North American size, NHL size.
00:12:30And this is an Olympic size rink.
00:12:31So it might make a bit of a difference, but a bigger rink, perhaps better for synchro.
00:12:36It can it can work to their advantage or disadvantage.
00:12:39They're playing with 15 extra feet on the width of their ice surface.
00:12:42So for teams that really use the markings on the ice to set up their elements,
00:12:46it can present a challenge.
00:12:49In some cases, it helps and in some cases it hinders.
00:12:52But hopefully these teams can keep their performances well maintained
00:12:56and not to not take up too much ice where they gain too much speed and lose control.
00:13:01Yeah, for those skating fans not knowing, a hockey rink has all the lines
00:13:04so you can sort of line things up.
00:13:06It isn't here. We have a logo with a bit of ice.
00:13:08So that's it.
00:13:10And here it is, the Lower Mainland Junior team from British Columbia, Yukon.
00:13:16And they are coached by Denali Harrison, team manager Jenny Milne.
00:13:23And keeping with their theme, the music is called Lonely.
00:13:34I'm slowly killing myself, I'm trying so hard at the back of the shelf.
00:13:53It's just the same every day.
00:13:57I'm writing these songs that will never get played.
00:14:01I get told what's wrong and what's right.
00:14:05I don't have a romantic life and everyone's dying.
00:14:12So I keep on trying to make them proud before they're gone.
00:14:17Can someone help me?
00:14:21Please, someone help me.
00:14:25I don't care anyone, anything,
00:14:28cause I'm so sick of being so lonely.
00:14:33I miss all my family.
00:14:38I don't care anyone, anything,
00:14:41cause I'm so sick of being so lonely.
00:15:02I'm spending more than I've heard, drink all the time to forget I'm not hurt.
00:15:27Cause I go to parties sometimes.
00:15:32And I'll kiss a boy and pretend for the night.
00:15:36Cause I don't know much about me.
00:15:40I'm still ashamed of who I used to be.
00:15:44So I try way too hard, but I still miss the marks I've been in, been in.
00:15:52Can someone help me?
00:15:56Please, someone help me.
00:16:00I don't care anyone, anything,
00:16:03cause I'm so sick of being so lonely.
00:16:09I miss all my family.
00:16:13I don't care anyone, anything,
00:16:16cause I'm so sick of being so lonely.
00:16:22I don't care anyone, anything,
00:16:25cause I'm so sick of being so lonely.
00:16:52I don't care anyone, anything,
00:16:55cause I'm so sick of being so lonely.
00:16:58I don't care anyone, anything,
00:17:01cause I'm so sick of being so lonely.
00:17:04I don't care anyone, anything,
00:17:07cause I'm so sick of being so lonely.
00:17:10I don't care anyone, anything,
00:17:13cause I'm so sick of being so lonely.
00:17:16I don't care anyone, anything,
00:17:19cause I'm so sick of being so lonely.
00:17:22I don't care anyone, anything,
00:17:25cause I'm so sick of being so lonely.
00:17:28I don't care anyone, anything,
00:17:31cause I'm so sick of being so lonely.
00:17:34I don't care anyone, anything,
00:17:37cause I'm so sick of being so lonely.
00:17:40I don't care anyone, anything,
00:17:43cause I'm so sick of being so lonely.
00:17:46Beautiful Beelman's great control.
00:17:49Next element, we're looking at the twizzle.
00:17:51Fairly good unison through this.
00:17:52Everyone kept their free leg up.
00:17:54They did three twizzles,
00:17:56which was their choice for a feature.
00:17:58Here they're going into the third one.
00:18:01But nicely done for this team.
00:18:03Difficult element to do.
00:18:05Looking at their whip intersection here,
00:18:06you want to see a mirror image.
00:18:17Final element there, the no hold element,
00:18:20which was in the box shape that we saw.
00:18:23Great skate from Lower Mainland.
00:18:26Nicely done for this team.
00:18:29As they bend down to make sure they get in the picture.
00:18:32It's a small kiss and cry area this year,
00:18:35so the team really have to squeeze in to fit everyone.
00:18:38They sure looked like they had fun,
00:18:40and they looked like they were very proud of what they did.
00:18:43Their coach said the team really bonded so well as a team.
00:18:46They've been working extremely hard.
00:18:48And as a coach, that's all you can really hope for,
00:18:50is athletes that are happy to be there and that work hard,
00:18:53and they get to enjoy the benefits of the hard work
00:18:56when it's time to compete.
00:18:58Yeah, and hope they stay together to continue their growth
00:19:01with another year.
00:19:03Yeah, the longer that a team is together,
00:19:05the more that they can continue to grow
00:19:07and evolve as a team.
00:19:09The longer that a team is together,
00:19:11the more that they can continue to grow and evolve as a group,
00:19:14and the better results we can expect.
00:19:16Let's take a look at the scores for the Lower Mainland Junior.
00:19:2039.23.
00:19:23They're the first team out in this event.
00:19:26Almost 3-point improvement from their last competition,
00:19:29so they're moving in the right direction.
00:19:31That's great.
00:19:33From Quebec, Golden Ice.
00:19:38From Quebec, Golden Ice.
00:19:41They're coached and choreographed by Vanessa D'Amico
00:19:43and Francois-Xavier Ouellet.
00:19:46They're on home ice here.
00:19:48Their program is inspired by the heat of flames
00:19:50and will explore the delicate border between control and chaos.
00:19:55And they'll skate to Chronicles by Audio Machine.

00:23:05Such a powerful theme and program for this team.
00:23:08Very powerful performance.
00:23:10I do think it's maybe not the powerful performance
00:23:14that they were looking for,
00:23:15but still, so many beautiful things that we saw there.
00:23:22A couple falls, as we noticed.
00:23:25I wish we could explain with language
00:23:27how difficult this discipline is.
00:23:29I always feel very frustrated
00:23:30because it's such a beautiful discipline
00:23:32and so difficult to skate each skater in such small spaces.
00:23:36Carry on, Lisa.
00:23:37It is. So this is their opening here.
00:23:39They've got lots of creativity to bring the viewer in.
00:23:42Again, not for points necessarily,
00:23:44but to help interpret the theme.
00:23:46Their first element here was the whip intersection.
00:23:48Ideally, you want to see everyone going through
00:23:50at the same time on one foot, arms overhead.
00:23:52That was awesome.
00:23:54Their next was their twizzle element.
00:23:56Nice unison through the rotations.
00:23:57You see the free leg extended, the arms above head.
00:24:00Those are all for added layers of difficulty.
00:24:04Lots of beautiful speed coming into their pivoting block.
00:24:10Room there, too, to add some more excitement
00:24:12as the program and the theme continues.
00:24:15We want to see nice straight lines there,
00:24:17parallel lines throughout this whole element.
00:24:21Judges are looking to see how tight the lines are.
00:24:23This is the open block that we mentioned.
00:24:25So you saw the triangle shape.
00:24:27Now we're seeing them move in a block shape
00:24:29on the diagonal, doing intricate steps and moves.
00:24:34Very hard to do that element
00:24:36because you're not skating directly next to bodies.
00:24:39So it's really hard to tell
00:24:40where you are relative to everyone else.
00:24:42Looking at the move element here,
00:24:44really nice spirals, good height,
00:24:46nice regrasp on the change of position
00:24:49and then into their second field move, the billman.
00:24:52We didn't see the fall in the replay.
00:24:54I never like to look at those again,
00:24:56but of course that does affect the mark overall.
00:24:58They'll receive a deduction for the fall
00:25:00and then the judges will have to decide
00:25:02whether that fell happened in an element
00:25:04or outside of an element
00:25:05to determine the true effects of that fall.
00:25:09That's a better view of the Kiss and Cry.
00:25:10We got the whole team in.
00:25:12Jesse, our cameraman's up,
00:25:14probably hanging off a balcony here
00:25:17to get that shot.
00:25:20Let's take a look at the scores.
00:25:22For Goldie Nice, 58.89.
00:25:25Second team out, they take the lead.
00:25:28Again, improvement from the last four
00:25:30by about three and a half points.
00:25:32So again, improvement from last time.
00:25:35Great job.
00:25:37Please welcome the next team.
00:25:39Representing Ontario, Gold Ice.
00:25:44And there they are.
00:25:46Gold Ice from Ontario,
00:25:48coached by Jessica Brown and Ashley Greenhalgh.
00:25:52Team manager, Andrea Clement.
00:25:55Program is the lotus flower

00:29:15A beautiful performance from that team.
00:29:18Ted, I find this team has just grown leaps and bounds
00:29:20over the past few months
00:29:21and it's amazing to see them
00:29:23deliver that kind of performance tonight.
00:29:25What a beautiful opening.
00:29:29It was truly inspired by their dance choreographer,
00:29:32Alex Krenian, who works with a number of ice dance teams
00:29:34but she actually comes from a commercial dance background.
00:29:37And so they worked with her and they said,
00:29:38we have this idea, how do we bring it to life?
00:29:41And I find a lot of teams this year
00:29:43are working with commercial dancers
00:29:45to bring new elements to the ice.
00:29:48It's not all about what we do with our blades anymore.
00:29:50Full body.
00:29:51Do you think it's important that, not important,
00:29:54that it would be good if the judges knew what the story is?
00:29:57Or they need to discover it on their own?
00:29:58I do.
00:29:59Yeah.
00:30:00I think there's a benefit to both,
00:30:01but I think if you understand
00:30:02what they're trying to portray ahead of time,
00:30:04then you can connect with more parts of the program
00:30:06as you're watching it.
00:30:08Look at this gorgeous opening.
00:30:10You can tell they've done so much off ice
00:30:12to refine those movements
00:30:13and making sure everyone is moving with the same authenticity.
00:30:17Absolutely gorgeous.
00:30:18Full commitment to the theme.
00:30:21Looking at their field moves here,
00:30:22this team has been known for their flexibility over the year.
00:30:25You see the upright extensions on the left-hand side,
00:30:27really hard to do with control.
00:30:30This is their twizzle element.
00:30:31You can see they start in one circle, they end in two.
00:30:34So that's their change of formation.
00:30:36They also had an interaction between the twizzles
00:30:38where they hold hand, really risky to do,
00:30:41but the risk paid off.
00:30:46They can work on the unison there.
00:30:48Here we're looking at the pivoting block.
00:30:49Look how straight and tight these lines are.
00:30:51That is exactly what the judges are looking to see.
00:30:54Good control and good straight lines.
00:30:57Looking at the whip here,
00:30:58you want to see everyone going through at the same moment.
00:31:01So hard to do as they're turning into that intersection blind.
00:31:06That next element here is their no-hold
00:31:08in the open block formation.
00:31:11It's such a big element,
00:31:12and when you think about how much speed these skaters have,
00:31:15there's not a lot of ice for them to cover.
00:31:20Strong ending and a beautiful skate for that team.
00:31:24As a coach, do you have to really talk to each one of the skaters
00:31:27to not skate out as big as they probably can individually,
00:31:31but skate within their own little circle?
00:31:33I mean, it's easy to keep everybody on track
00:31:36because some are more powerful than the others, right?
00:31:39In synchro, you're constantly adjusting based on those around you.
00:31:42So if you notice your neighbor is taking a deeper edge,
00:31:45you're trying to match them.
00:31:46If they're shallower, you have to take a shallower edge too.
00:31:49It's all about looking around you at all times
00:31:52and making sure that you're staying in relative distance
00:31:55to the people around you.
00:31:57It's a thinking sport.
00:31:59And it's really complicated to speak with so many people
00:32:02at the same time,
00:32:03although they're supposed to be doing,
00:32:04in many cases, the same things.
00:32:06They're in different parts of the ice,
00:32:07and so there's a lot of work by the coach.
00:32:09How many coaches on the ice during a practice session?
00:32:11Is it two or is it just one?
00:32:13So this team, they have a core group of four coaches.
00:32:15They actually work with all of the teams.
00:32:17There's nine teams within Gold Ice,
00:32:19and their core group works with all of the teams
00:32:21from beginner all the way up to junior.
00:32:23They actually have three girls on this team
00:32:25that started Gold Ice beginner 10 years ago.
00:32:28So really amazing to see as a coach,
00:32:30you're able to bring those skaters through the ranks.
00:32:33So they have a factory.
00:32:34Let's take a look at the scores for this team.
00:32:3758.17.
00:32:39That'll put Gold Ice shortly in the second place.
00:32:44They were aiming for a score in the mid-60s,
00:32:46so they're going to be looking at the report card
00:32:48to see where they can improve before they're international
00:32:50in a few weeks.
00:32:53Just a little bit off of first place,
00:32:55and we can see the Zambonis on the ice
00:32:57for the ice resurfacing,
00:32:58always after about three teams,
00:33:00in some cases four teams.
00:33:01So lots of ice resurfacing
00:33:03during a synchronized skating event.
00:33:05We'll step aside as we take a short break.
00:33:07You're watching the first day of coverage of five
00:33:10here at the Skate Canada 2025 National Skating Championships.
00:33:13I'm Ted Bartlett with Lisa Carriere.
00:33:15We'll be back right after this.

00:50:48I love that performance.
00:50:57I love the heart that this team brings onto the ice.
00:51:00And every move they do is so beautifully done.
00:51:03They look like a team of ice dancers.
00:51:06You know, it's so interesting, the opening of that program,
00:51:09and the closing as well, was so powerful
00:51:11because the team is tight-knit together, close.
00:51:14So the image that you see in the rink and on camera here
00:51:18is so powerful when you see all the faces and all the bodies
00:51:21and the choreographic movements. It's very powerful.
00:51:23I don't know why any teams would be so far apart across the ice.
00:51:27I'm just, what do I know? I know nothing but.
00:51:30I know what I like, and I just love that image.
00:51:33But to your point, I think Synchro is becoming more and more focused now
00:51:36on like, what can we do that the other disciplines can't?
00:51:39What can we create on the ice?
00:51:41So here you're seeing, okay, as a Synchro team,
00:51:43you can create this imagery, you can create this group dynamic
00:51:46and this force, so let's use that.
00:51:49And you see that through a number of the Synchro elements this season,
00:51:52where teams are really taking that to heart.
00:51:54That's so powerful, that opening. That was just awesome.
00:51:57Looking at their Twizzle element here,
00:51:59arms above head for the layer of difficulty.
00:52:01That exit is so hard to hold that edge and maintain spacing.
00:52:05Looking at their second Twizzle here,
00:52:07some spacing issues throughout this Twizzle.
00:52:10So you want to try to see the consistent shape
00:52:12that's easily identified on the ice.
00:52:15Looking at their whip intersection, nice timing going through.
00:52:18They chose to do that on two feet.
00:52:20I'm sure moving forward, they'll attempt that on one foot for more difficulty.
00:52:24Beautiful skating skills here through their no-hold element.
00:52:28Seeing those ice dance skating skills absolutely shine.
00:52:34Looking at the pivoting block.
00:52:35So it's not only important to see those straight lines that you see.
00:52:38The judges are also looking at the edges on the ice
00:52:40and trying to ensure they're on the correct edge
00:52:42for the turns that they're attempting.
00:52:44Final move element here.
00:52:47Nice free leg height.
00:52:49Ted, as we saw, the marks are now coming up on the screen.
00:52:52So we have a little bit of an insight
00:52:54as to what the judges are seeing as we go along.
00:52:57Looks like the team might have received a few downgrades,
00:53:00which means they're not receiving the full difficulty
00:53:03that they were attempting.
00:53:06And that will be reflected in their final marks.
00:53:10But a lot of happy faces there.
00:53:13Yeah, and it's interesting because they can be all thrilled,
00:53:16but now the moment will validate it or not.
00:53:20Let's take a look at the Short Program scores for Ice Ignite.
00:53:22It's a 58.93, and that puts them in the first place.
00:53:27Yeah, they look pretty happy with that.
00:53:29That's an over 12-point improvement from their last case.
00:53:32Wow.
00:53:35That's great.
00:53:37Please welcome the next team.
00:53:40There's the next team on the ice.
00:53:42Representing Quebec, Nova.
00:53:46What a history.
00:53:4820 years of history, believe it or not.
00:53:50This organization is celebrating their 20th year this season.
00:53:54They're skating to a beautiful song.
00:53:56Oh, go ahead.
00:53:57They're coached by Nadine Tuga and Joannie Brezeau.
00:54:02They'll be skating to a song that showcases the team's grace,
00:54:06passion, and femininity.
00:54:31Why are you starting again?
00:54:35I'm just an unimportant being
00:54:39Without him, I'm a bit lost
00:54:41I wander alone in the crowd
00:54:44It's the last dance
00:54:47To forget my immense pain
00:54:51I want to run away, for you to start again
00:54:55For my sweet suffering
00:54:59I look up at the sky, day and night

01:03:29What an incredible performance from Nexus Jr.
01:03:56They were on.
01:03:57Making a proud bow to all of their friends and family in the stands and those of us cheering
01:03:58on from home.
01:03:59But that was a strong piece of music and they really, they stepped it up.
01:04:14And you were saying off air how good this event is so far today.
01:04:22All the teams are killing it, you said.
01:04:24They are.
01:04:25Every team is just performing so well and that's what we want to see, you know, as fans
01:04:29of the sport.
01:04:30We want to see every team shine.
01:04:32This is such a beautiful opening.
01:04:34You had a wow moment there.
01:04:36Just so impactful to see the craze of the movement and then the frozen moment there.
01:04:43Looking at this pivot block here, nice straight lines.
01:04:47Good timing of the turns.
01:04:49Look how strong their upper bodies are.
01:04:52There is no faltering at any point in these elements.
01:04:55Really nice extended free legs on the twizzles.
01:04:57Good unison of the rotations.
01:05:01Such a creative way to execute that element.
01:05:06And an aha at the end.
01:05:09Look at the move element here with the change of place with the skaters.
01:05:15That's another thing that's changed and evolved so much over the years in synchro is just
01:05:18the flexibility required.
01:05:20Looking at the whip intersection.
01:05:22Remember, the skaters are turning as they go through the hole.
01:05:24They're blind.
01:05:25They have to have full trust that their hole is going to be there when they arrive.
01:05:29And it was.
01:05:32I love the way this team does their no-hold block here.
01:05:35Talking to a lot of the coaches, this is a new element feature for this year and it's
01:05:40one that was met with a lot of resistance at the beginning.
01:05:43It was something new.
01:05:44The teams didn't like skating it, but as they've continued to train it over the season, it's
01:05:49one of their favorite elements.
01:05:50Let's take a look at the short program scores for Nexus.
01:05:5167.15.
01:05:52And they look pretty happy with that number and their performance.
01:05:53That puts them into first place with one team to come.
01:05:54A definite season's best.
01:05:55They are happy with that score.
01:05:56Well done, skaters.
01:05:57There is the final team on the ice from Quebec.
01:05:58Les Supremes.
01:05:59Coached by Pascal Denis and Laurie Desilets.
01:06:00The program is inspired by Mortis.
01:06:01It's a great program.

01:09:32It's a great team.
01:09:33Go Mr. Chess.
01:09:46What a strong performance from Lacey Graham Junior, oh my goodness.
01:09:51That was a piece of music that was selected because the team loved it.
01:09:57team loved it and I think any time you can pick a piece of music for your
01:10:01athletes that they love to skate to that is the result
01:10:06yeah it's incredible they look so I don't say intense is the wrong word so
01:10:11committed at the top of the program to excellence in everything whether it's
01:10:16their spirals or their positions or their their tracking of each other I
01:10:20mean every team is but this team is really one of the teams at the highest
01:10:24level of all of that they are the reigning world champions so that is safe
01:10:28to say I guess they got lucky in that one beautiful opening here again like
01:10:36you said just so committed to the program theme the darkness the strength
01:10:40of the character Morticia really nice height in the spirals this is an element
01:10:46this year so every team has to do the spirals and then you're seeing the
01:10:48second field move there with the Billman really really difficult to do
01:10:53loved their no-hold element here beautiful spacing and that spacing
01:10:58requires so much consistency time and time again between the skaters a true
01:11:03testament to how hard these skaters work
01:11:08this was the entry into their whip intersection it looks like they're going
01:11:13into a collapsing box and then magic those are your two C's that is one of
01:11:20those brilliant moments in synchro that coaches around the world will be
01:11:25watching to try to figure out how they did it beautiful twizzles so complicated
01:11:32what they're trying to do and that the nice thing is a lot of these skaters
01:11:35will then move on to senior and they'll have these beautiful skills like this
01:11:40pivoting block to lean on as they move into the higher levels so much great
01:11:45unison tight lines and speed throughout that element we're following along
01:11:52following along with the calls as they went element by element and it looks
01:11:57like they might hold on to their title for the junior short program we'll find
01:12:03out in a few minutes or seconds
01:12:11the scores please let's take a look at the scores for the short program 68.6
01:12:23zero that puts lace a friend in the first place
01:12:29they're happy with that ranking look how tight it is
01:12:34they're happy but they're also aware it's a bit tight and what you're able to
01:12:49deliver when it matters but a pretty clean performance by all the teams
01:12:54tonight solid you talked about that that it was consistent and they're at the top
01:12:59of the games the top of their game it's a good start early on in the season as
01:13:12they move forward to international competitions world competitions of
01:13:15course and we're looking for a repeat both in junior and senior World
01:13:20Championship that would be remarkable it's already extraordinary the work
01:13:25and the coaches of course pretty special it's remarkable the coaching community
01:13:31how they come together and work this discipline to be the top of the world
01:13:36really from Canada here's take a look at some of the let's take a look at the top
01:13:39three teams Lisa looking at Nova they had such a strong short program today I
01:13:45loved how this program really captured the character of the skaters and how
01:13:50they were able to bring the strength from start to finish throughout this
01:13:54program so many beautiful moments you could tell how how long that they train
01:14:00on and off the ice to perfect all of their movements beautifully done as this
01:14:06team sits in third place Nexus jr. in second place again such a beautiful
01:14:13strong program a little bit different for the Nexus jr. team than what we're
01:14:18used to seeing a lot of times they have softer beautiful short programs and I
01:14:22loved how this team push the envelope to do something different and innovative
01:14:27that helps the athletes to grow when you're able to skate to different types
01:14:33of music and explore different kinds of movements and themes so many great moves
01:14:40there and just a strong performance which will leave them confident going
01:14:46into tomorrow's free program finally looking at Lisa Prem jr. current
01:14:52currently sitting in first place this is a program that really filled the ring
01:14:57boards to boards they had so much power and energy all of their movements look
01:15:01so refined they just really fill the space as individual skaters but also as
01:15:09a team well it's been a great day of skating as we finished with the
01:15:13synchronized skates we hope that everyone will join us tomorrow for the
01:15:16junior men's free program the junior free dance and the junior pair short
01:15:20program that'll be followed by the junior synchro free program and the
01:15:24senior synchro short program so that concludes day one coverage of the
01:15:29national skating championship
01:15:43Oh
01:16:13Oh
01:16:43Oh
01:17:13Oh
