00:01:30Welcome to the very final event here on day number three at the Canadian Skating Championships.
00:01:35I'm Ted Barton along with Kirsten Moore-Towers, the senior pair's short program coming right
00:01:40up and lots of interesting stories.
00:01:43There are, Ted.
00:01:44You know what?
00:01:45It's a smaller event like we saw in the junior event, but the exciting thing about the senior
00:01:48pairs are four teams in this event have won international medals on the senior level and
00:01:53one team has won international medals on the junior level.
00:01:56So though the event is small, we are bound to see some really great stuff, some great
00:02:00foundational skills, and also, of course, we have the reigning world champions here
00:02:05competing today, Diana Stiletto-Dudek and Maxime Deschamps.
00:02:08They are back at the Canadian Nationals having to withdraw from the Grand Prix final last
00:02:13month in France due to Max falling ill and them missing a number of weeks of training.
00:02:19And I spoke to their coach, Josée Picard, and she said, though it's always a challenge
00:02:24and an unfortunate circumstance to withdraw from an event, it allowed them the time and
00:02:29space to work on some choreographical changes, to work on some of the smaller elements that
00:02:35they don't, in Diana's words, give as much love as some of their bigger elements.
00:02:39And so they've had two great weeks of training.
00:02:42They're looking strong.
00:02:43They're ready to compete here.
00:02:44We're excited to see them.
00:02:45Well, no one ever wants an injury or an illness, but when they come along, you have to learn
00:02:49to cope with it.
00:02:50And quite often, it gives you a breather.
00:02:51And as you mentioned, get to work on things that you may not have spent time on.
00:02:55So that is good for them.
00:02:56Let's talk about some of the other teams.
00:02:57I see the team of Fiona Bombardier and Benjamin Mimar, a new team.
00:03:02Absolutely.
00:03:03A new team and an exciting team.
00:03:04This team only started skating together in the spring of 2024.
00:03:08And in this short amount of time, they have made huge strides.
00:03:11They are certainly a team to look for here as well as in the future.
00:03:15We also have, of course, Leah Pereira and Trent Michaud, who are the reigning silver
00:03:19medalists at the National Championships, looking for some strong skates from them as
00:03:23well here.
00:03:24And Kellyanne Lohan and Luca Etier, also from the World Championships last year in Montreal,
00:03:31had a great showing for them at Worlds last year and have had some great competitions
00:03:35this season too.
00:03:36So we're looking forward to a really great event, I think, Ted, and hoping for some stepping
00:03:42stones for some of these teams on the way to perhaps bigger championship events at the
00:03:47end of the season.
00:03:48And I know we have a lot of pre-novice teams in Canada.
00:03:50You were a coach of some of those teams last season.
00:03:52Your teams are moving up into novice and smaller category in juniors and seniors.
00:03:57We talked about that.
00:03:58Perhaps COVID got in the way of that, but a lot of young teams coming up.
00:04:01So that's exciting.
00:04:02And they're looking up to the world champions.
00:04:03They're looking up to all these teams as well.
00:04:06And what great experience that we have with the Kellyanne and Luca, Leah and Trent and
00:04:11Deanna and Max last year at the World Championships.
00:04:14That was a buzz.
00:04:15And that was a great learning experience.
00:04:17And World Championships at home.
00:04:19And we've heard from their coaches that they've really reveled in this experience and have
00:04:23really cherished that perhaps this is a once in a lifetime event and not one that many
00:04:27athletes get.
00:04:28And I think all took different things from that event for sure.
00:04:32Well, up next, the Pairs short program.

00:07:37Pairs Short Program and some inside looks and feels about what happens in that event,
00:07:43in the program itself.
00:07:45As we take a look at the officials for this event, we thank them for all the time, years
00:07:49and years and years of training.

00:09:43Let's talk also about some of the other teams that we have in the event.
00:09:48Absolutely.
00:09:49We also have today Christina Lyons and Marty Hobrick.
00:09:55They are a new team as well.
00:09:57In their first season together, Marty has done Senior Pairs for a number of years and a junior
00:10:02We also have former partner Summer Homick who we saw in the Junior Dance event.
00:10:06He is here with Christina Lyons in their debut season together.
00:10:11Also, we have Jasmine Derochet and Kieran Thrasher.
00:10:14You may recognize that name.
00:10:16You saw Jasmine and Kieran at the Junior Grand Prix Final last month in March.
00:10:20You heard that right.
00:10:21Junior.
00:10:22They are here competing Senior domestically.
00:10:24I spoke to coach Bruno Marcotte a little bit about that and about the decision behind that.
00:10:30It makes a lot of sense when you hear the strategy behind it.
00:10:33Really, every decision that is being made for these teams is in keeping with the progression
00:10:37and the steady improvement for each of them.
00:10:40There we saw Fiona Bombardier and Benjamin Mimar.
00:10:43A new team we talked about earlier.
00:10:45Going on to the ice.
00:10:48Here is our first team.
00:10:50Christina Lyons and Marty Hobrick from Ontario.
00:10:54Anyone in 23 years of age.
00:10:56There is Fiona Bombardier and Benjamin Mimar.
00:10:59A new team.
00:11:00Great skaters.
00:11:04Jasmine Derochet and Kieran Thrasher.
00:11:07Lots of experience in the Junior Circuit.
00:11:09This is their first time at Senior Nationals.
00:11:19Here they go.
00:11:20Six minutes starts.
00:11:21I had to have a little laugh there.
00:11:23We saw Fiona and Ben struggle through their opening presentation.
00:11:26They have fantastic side-by-side triple jumps and throw triples.
00:11:30They are a new team as I mentioned.
00:11:32These little things they probably haven't practiced as much.
00:11:35I thought that was cute and funny.
00:11:38We will see them continue to improve and progress.
00:11:42How long have they been together?
00:11:44They started skating together in the spring of 2024.
00:11:47Not long at all.
00:11:50They started skating together just as an exercise.
00:11:53Neither of them had a partner.
00:11:55They wanted to keep moving.
00:11:57It appeared to their coaching team that they could be something
00:11:59special.
00:12:01The team would be a viable option for them.
00:12:03Less than a year.
00:12:05That's right.
00:12:07We look at Kieran Thrasher and Jasmine.
00:12:10Here they are.
00:12:12Fiona Bombardier and Benjamin Mimar.
00:12:15Ben is fairly experienced.
00:12:18He has been to the world championships with former partner Brooke McIntosh.
00:12:22Fiona has done one season of pairs.
00:12:24She is relatively new to the discipline.
00:12:26She has picked the elements up very quickly.
00:12:28I am impressed with her.
00:12:30Last year definitely a learning year for her.
00:12:32Now we see her looking extremely comfortable.
00:12:40At the boards with them is Julie Marcotte.
00:12:42Choreographer of their programs this season.
00:12:45Speaking to their coaches, they don't have placement goals here.
00:12:47They are trying to show the country and the world that they
00:12:49are a team worth watching.
00:12:51One day they will be able to contend.
00:12:53I think they are right.
00:12:55That might be sooner rather than later.
00:12:57You never know what could happen.
00:12:59Next season is the Olympic season.
00:13:01They may not have their eyes set on this.
00:13:03You never know.
00:13:05Absolutely.
00:13:08Looking at Christina Lyons and Marty Hobrick.
00:13:10Another new team.
00:13:12You will see every team do one throw in the short program.
00:13:14Unlike junior, if you were with us earlier, they can choose any
00:13:16throw they would like to complete.
00:13:18We saw there that Christina and Marty will likely choose the
00:13:20Saukau.
00:13:22That is what they are warming up.
00:13:24They are warming up.
00:13:26They are warming up.
00:13:28They are warming up.
00:13:30They are warming up.
00:13:32They are warming up.
00:13:34They are warming up.
00:13:37And here, Jazmyne Darochet.
00:13:39In speaking to Bruno, I touched on that just a minute ago.
00:13:41There are many different angles for them.
00:13:43A pop.
00:13:45Many different angles behind going senior.
00:13:47Bruno wants them to go senior with no expectations before
00:13:49they fully immerse themselves in senior next season.
00:13:51To be part of the competition with these skaters and soak in
00:13:53the experience without worrying too much about what they do.
00:13:55It is not for the day.
00:13:57It is all about the experience.
00:13:59with these skaters and to soak in the experience
00:14:02without worrying too much about what they do.
00:14:04So it's not for the day, it's the experience for the future
00:14:08that's important to get, and no harm done here.
00:14:11Absolutely, and in senior in the free program,
00:14:14we see the teams complete three lifts,
00:14:15whereas in junior there's only two.
00:14:17So in having to practice that third lift
00:14:19for their senior debut, they also work on versatility
00:14:23in their lifts and stamina in a long program,
00:14:25all things that will help them should they be chosen
00:14:28for the junior world championships.
00:14:31So what are the special characteristics for pair skaters
00:14:34that differ a little bit with ice dance and single skaters?
00:14:37Because you've done both disciplines.
00:14:38Well, not ice dance, but I have done single skating.
00:14:41Nice double twist there from Christine and Marty.
00:14:43I think in general, pair skaters have to understand
00:14:48how to be a team and work well with a partner.
00:14:51And I think in doing this discipline,
00:14:53you learn a lot about working with someone else
00:14:56and the way you communicate within these experiences.
00:14:59I think for the women in pair skating,
00:15:02there has to be some element of no fear.
00:15:06There are lots of high-flying facets
00:15:09and elements to pair skating,
00:15:11and it certainly is helpful if you thrive
00:15:14under these kind of adrenaline-like experiences.
00:15:19So you're attracted to the adrenaline rush, right?
00:15:22Yes, I would think most of these women
00:15:24are attracted to the adrenaline rush for sure.
00:15:28And for the men?
00:15:30For the men, I think an element of care
00:15:34and being able to take good care of your partner
00:15:37and to be able to work again like the women as a team,
00:15:41be able to communicate effectively
00:15:43and to share in these common experiences.
00:15:46It's so important to be able to discuss
00:15:48what the common goals are and form a plan with your team
00:15:51to work together to be able to accomplish these things.
00:15:55And I think that not any one personality
00:15:58is only set out for it.
00:15:59I think many personalities can grow
00:16:02and become kind of the person
00:16:04that each of them want to be within the sport.
00:16:06And I think all the different personalities
00:16:08are what make it so special and so beautiful.
00:16:10And I think the men, technically,
00:16:11they need to really understand the foundation,
00:16:14the safety foundation they need to be for their partner
00:16:17and for the team itself.
00:16:19Good turns on the lift,
00:16:20strong lifting positions,
00:16:23and of course, side-by-side elements
00:16:25along with the women as well.
00:16:26So you have to understand exactly what your job
00:16:29and your role is, both as an individual and as the team.
00:16:33That's right.
00:16:33And the element of safety is so important,
00:16:36the most important, in my opinion,
00:16:38as a skater and as a new coach.
00:16:40And this is something that's taught.
00:16:42These teams don't start pair skating
00:16:44doing only the most difficult things.
00:16:46I think it's important to note,
00:16:47and most of the listeners and audience will know this,
00:16:50but there are so many progressions
00:16:51that lead into the elements that we see here today.
00:16:54And in this event, we'll see different levels of execution
00:16:58of those particular elements.
00:16:59When we watch Deanna and Max,
00:17:01we'll see these elements done with incredible ease.
00:17:04And some of these earlier teams in the event
00:17:06will still be in those progression and learning stages
00:17:08of the elements in their program.
00:17:10You told me earlier today that, as a coach,
00:17:13it's difficult, now as a coach, it's difficult to decide,
00:17:16do I have my team go with this
00:17:18a little bit more difficult element,
00:17:19because I'm a little bit worried,
00:17:20but I think they need to.
00:17:22It's a difficult decision.
00:17:23And here we go.
00:17:24The Senior Pair Short Program starts now.

00:41:06Beautifully done.
00:41:10We've seen a few throw triples in this event already.
00:41:12And something you can look for in this final group is the size of the pattern that they take into the throw.
00:41:18The speed.
00:41:19Sometimes we like to talk about the speed that the woman has when she's exiting the throw.
00:41:23A really good throw may have more speed coming out than it has going in.
00:41:29Throw triple loop there from Kellyanne.
00:41:32Also beautifully done.
00:41:33Beautifully done.
00:41:36These are some of the things that we see that are rewarded in the quality mark side of these skaters' programs.
00:41:43And that is, of course, the amount of extra marks that the element will get from the judging panel who deems how well they did it.
00:41:51And these teams are looking to not only perform the elements but perform them in a way that achieves them the highest level of what we call, of course, grade of execution.
00:42:03Max and Deanna warming up just with a double twist.
00:42:06Probably the best twist in the world, if not one of the best twists in the world.
00:42:11That was obviously the double, which for them will be a progression to the triple that we will see in their program.
00:42:25Another twist. Double twist again from Kellyanne and Luka.
00:42:33All teams will do one twist in their short program and usually they put it first.
00:42:39Reason for that being it requires a lot of mental and physical strength for the teams.
00:42:44So putting it first when they have, oops, the most amount of energy is advantageous for these teams.
00:42:51It also is a strategy choice because the twist, when done well, can earn, for teams like Max and Deanna, it will earn them more than eight points.
00:42:59Which in a short program is a large percentage, beautiful triple twist there, it's a large percentage of the total points that you earn.
00:43:07So putting it first allows you to have the maximum strength that a triple twist requires.
00:43:12All of these teams are with extremely experienced coaching teams.
