Will Rooney reports from Goodison Park as David Moyes suffers defeat in his first game since returning as manager.
Transcript
00:00Full time at Goodison Park, David Moyes' first game back as Everton manager and there was no fairy tale start for the Scot.
00:11A 1-0 defeat at the hands of Aston Villa for the Toffees and their problems that they had under Sean Dyche continued.
00:19David Moyes didn't have a lot of time to work with the players, just one and a half days.
00:25But in truth, it could have been Sean Dyche filling the dugout because Everton lacked attacking threat yet again.
00:32They didn't look too bad at the back with their architects and their own downfall.
00:36In fact, they got away with a couple of mistakes that weren't punished by Aston Villa and they were poor in front of goal.
00:43Villa made a good start to the game, had a couple of efforts.
00:48Morgan Rodgers forcing a good save out to Jordan Pickford and then Ashley Young playing a really, really poor ball that set Ollie Watkins free.
00:59Jordan Pickford got his angles right and Watkins shot wide.
01:03Everton struggled to create chances.
01:06He had a couple of hard chances.
01:08Dominic Calvert-Lewin flashed wide from a cute angle.
01:11Abdelayde Okorre got on the end of a cross that was put in by Vitaly Mikhalenko.
01:18Ultimately, Everton were toothless in the final phase and they were punished in the 51st minute.
01:26Jarrett Bramfwaite came out of his position but lost the ball.
01:29Villa launched a counter-attack and it was rounded off by that man Watkins who slid home past his England teammate Jordan Pickford.
01:37After that, Everton couldn't break Villa down.
01:40They really struggled, lacked ideas yet again.
01:44Probably had one late chance through Calvert-Lewin when the ball was pulled back to him.
01:49Probably a little bit behind them.
01:51Maybe should have done a bit better but otherwise, they were toothless.
01:56David Moyes has got a real task on his hands.
01:59He knows that.
02:00He said after the game he's not a magician and they need addition to the transfer market.
02:05That is clear.
02:06There's two weeks left of the window open and they need to get players in.
02:12Big time. We've got Tottenham Hotspur on Sunday.
02:15Will anyone be through the door by then?
02:17Unsure.
02:18David Moyes says that he'll only bring in players that are going to improve Everton.
02:24One positive I took was I thought Vitaly Mikhailenko was better than he has been.
02:28He's had a struggling season so far.
02:30He looked like he was under orders to get forwards a little bit more.
02:34But there weren't too many of us.
02:36Jordan Pickford had another good game, kept the scoreline down.
02:39But one blow that David Moyes confirmed after the game was that Armando Brogier is set to be sidelined for ankle injury between 10 and 12 weeks.
02:49So up to three months and Everton are going to have talks with Chelsea over the possibility of Brogier's loan being terminated.
02:57That would free up a domestic loan spot.
02:59I'd be interested to see what they could get in with that.
03:02It depends whether Chelsea want to agree to those terms or not.
03:07I'm sure they've planned their season with Brogier not being part of their budget.
03:16Disappointing for Brogier because he arrived with an achilles injury and just hasn't got going.
03:21Everton have to show him a few glimpses.
03:25Disappointing night on David Moyes' first game back as manager.
03:28Ends it up at nil, Aston Villa 1.
