00:00Despite the SIM Card Registration Act, which touted to put a huge dent on text message
00:04spam and phone scams, a wave of text scams has been on the rise since the beginning of
00:09last year.
00:10The latest ones?
00:11ePay wallet or bank messages seeking and prompting one to engage or respond, and have elicited
00:17the complaints of hundreds of thousands, as our William Theo reports.
00:23Have you received text messages like these?
00:26They claim to be legitimate ePay wallets or banks and include a link or perhaps a phone
00:31call?
00:32Because there have been more than 6 million text scams and over 600,000 scam calls.
00:38This is the data reported by the technology firm GoGoLook in 2024.
00:44It is based on data collected through GoGoLook's mobile application, Who's Call, and anti-scam
00:50app.
00:51This report was presented to the Cybercrime Investigation and Coordinating Center of the
00:57DICT.
00:58Based on these figures, it can be seen that the number of scams has been rising steadily
01:03since the first quarter of 2024.
01:07From 1.1 million SMS scams reported in the first quarter of 2024, it rose to over 2 million
01:14SMS scams by the last quarter of the year.
01:17The trend for scam calls follows a similar pattern.
01:21From over 100,000 in the first quarter, more than 200,000 were reported in the fourth quarter
01:28of 2024.
01:30The Burmonts from September to December saw the highest number of SMS scams and scam calls
01:36in the past year.
01:37More of a cultural thing.
01:38Why?
01:39Because we all know that during the last quarter of the year, so that's where we would have
01:48like a higher, you know, a higher tendency to spend, you know.
01:55So we do have the time of the year that we earn our commission, we buy rewards, bonuses.
02:02Who's Call also reported over 16,000 risky URLs sent in 2024.
02:08Most of these were links inviting users to register for online services, promotions,
02:14insurance, game memberships, financial services, loans, and rewards.
02:20Increase is more than 100 percent, more than 100 percent.
02:25If we compare the quarter four of 2023, vis-a-vis quarter four of 2024, more than 100 percent
02:35increase for both scam calls and SMS scams.
02:41According to CICC Executive Director Undersecretary Alexander Ramos, there is already an announcement
02:49urging people not to click links in text messages, especially with a policy now in place.
02:54You see the third party of a scammer trying to take control of your account or take away
03:03your money.
03:04So that's what we've been saying over and over again, because we knew that our practices,
03:11our behaviors, we are fast in doing that.
03:15So we changed the norm by removing that as a vulnerability of our main users.
03:23Ramos added that due to SIM card registration, they now know who they can track down.
03:30As a result, vulnerability of the process has been substantially reduced.
03:35Ramos also noted that new scams originating from social media platforms are not covered
03:41under the SIM Registration Act, and they are proposing amendments or the creation of a
03:46new law to address this issue.
