03:03en patinage synchronisé chez les seniors. Good evening and welcome to Place Bell in

03:18few moments, we will start the senior synchronised short programme. Les officiels pour cette

05:29Well, as we start off the senior short programme in synchronised skating, let's just do a quick
05:34review of the elements we're about to see. Each team will feature an angle intersection,
05:39their move element, which will include spirals and veilments, the no-hold element where the
05:44intricate, difficult steps are being counted. You'll see a synchronised spin and a travel
05:49element. First team taking the ice here, Black Gold from CSCS Calgary, Alberta. And as we
06:02talked about prior to this event, you'll notice there's 12 skaters on the ice instead of the
06:07typical 16. So this is actually an elite 12 senior team. It was a new division created
06:14in hopes of getting synchronised skating into the Olympics with smaller team sizes. And
06:20what we're seeing at the national championships in Canada and United States and a number of
06:25the international events as well is the combination of the elite 12 category with the senior
06:30category. And I asked you, Lisa, I said, well, was that successful? Do you hesitate and say,
06:35well, not yet. They're looking at even less. So which, you know, everybody has a variety
06:42of opinions on that, but the effort to put synchro in Olympics is well underway, has been
06:47for years, and we hope someday to be able to celebrate. Absolutely. They're not losing
06:54their steam, but we haven't made the headway we're looking for just yet. Unfortunately,
07:02with the elite 12 discipline, they were hoping that we would see the strength of the top
07:07senior teams in the world, but just with fewer skaters. But of course, the teams that
07:12have 16, they don't want to try this new form of 12 and lose the integrity of what they've
07:18built over decades. And so most of the teams competing in senior are still competing in
07:24senior. And we've seen the addition of new teams take on the elite 12 category, which
07:28is also great for the sport. And as you mentioned, I believe they are going to be trialing at
07:38some competitions, an exhibition of teams of eight. So we'll see how that looks. For
07:44me personally, I think one of the beautiful things about synchro is the number of skaters
07:49on the ice and just the volume of skaters creates that impressive feeling on the ice.
07:56And when you start to take away skaters, you take away that impact.
07:58That's true.
08:00We've got life-long compromises to reach an ultimate goal, so we will see what happens.
08:06There they are, Black Gold, Calgary Synchronized Skating Club.
08:12Coached by Jamie Kosinec and Kim Borman.
08:17Their show program is Cry Me a River. It's a piece of music that was instantly connecting
08:24with this team as they take their starting pose.
08:46We love you.
08:48Come on.
08:51You took a chance.
08:55We made a plan.
08:59You went on your way.

14:23The short program scores
14:2844.144 for Black Gold
14:32First team out.
14:37Please welcome the next team
14:41The next team, représentant du Québec, Nelka.
14:47From Québec, Nelka.
14:51Coached by Dominique Barth and Nadine Tuga.
14:56And their short program is about a person who walks away from a difficult and toxic relationship
15:02after realizing the importance of their own self-worth.
15:41Those nasty things are tempting me
15:45Oh, but I ain't going back
15:49You take it from me
15:51Cause I'm finished
15:53Oh, now it's gone
15:55I should let you go
15:57It's beneath your leg
15:59It's yours to demand
16:01Oh, but I ain't going back no more
16:06You're in love with a fake
16:07Don't want to show you
16:08But I made up
16:10Breaking every chain
16:12That you put on me
16:14You're in love with a fake
16:16Don't want to show you
16:18Cause I'm finished
16:20Oh, now it's gone
16:22I should let you go
16:24It's beneath your leg
16:26It's yours to demand
16:28Oh, now it's gone
16:30I should let you go
16:32It's beneath your leg
16:35It's yours to demand
16:42You're in love with a fake
16:43You think you're in love
16:44With a fake
16:45You're in love with a fake
16:46You think you're in love
16:47I never wanted
16:48It's beneath your leg
16:50It's yours to demand
16:51You gotta be more
16:53Gotta be a little stronger
16:55Stronger
17:04They can never change what you put on me
17:20I said I wouldn't change, but I really don't, yeah
17:25I will never be what you wanted this time, this time
17:35It's keeping me alive
17:41I said I wouldn't change, but I really don't, yeah
17:44I said I would never be what you wanted this time
17:48This time
17:50It's keeping me alive
17:54This fire, this fire
18:00It's keeping me alive
18:21Wow, what a fantastic skate from Nova Senior
18:25There was so much heart and confidence in that program
18:30I felt like it was Tom's attack throughout the entire program
18:39You know, one of my questions, Lisa, when they're so thrilled at the end, do they know, did everybody skate well?
18:44Because there's so many of them on the ice, would they have noticed a fall?
18:49There isn't one here, but would they?
18:50You always know, I'll say 90% of the time you know if there's been a fall on your team
18:55But more than that, there's this energy within the team when elements work
19:00And you know the feeling, you know, if a line is broken or if there's a collision through an intersection
19:06And when you're able to skate a program that's clean like that, under pressure at these national championships
19:12That is the gold standard for teams, and that's what they're celebrating
19:18There's so much beautiful elements in this program and beautiful choreography
19:24Look how they just fly down the ice in this move element with the interlocking spokes
19:29So much speed, and as I mentioned before, so much confidence through all of these steps
19:34Check out that Hydroblade into this spiral
19:37They're one of the only teams, if not the only team in the world, that hits the block formation in the middle of this element
19:43Instead of starting in a block
19:45Just so much innovation and creativity in the choreography of this program
19:51Really beautiful arm movements, you see the lean on the edges demonstrating their excellent skating skills
19:57Look at that stop spiral, that's one of those underappreciated moves that are so incredibly hard to do
20:04But to synchronize it as a team with the timing and the spacing is remarkable
20:11Beautiful synchronized spin there, lots of speed as they change into their second position
20:17This team worked with a spin specialist on those individual spins to improve their speed and their positioning
20:24And I think it paid off
20:26Last element here was their angle intersection, looks like it was rewarded top marks for technical difficulty
20:34It is so hard to make that hole and to go through while maintaining your speed and your spacing
20:43Awesome job Nova
20:48And there are their happy faces
20:51Anxiously waiting for those numbers, it's amazing because they have numbers in their mind of what they want to achieve
20:58Let's see if they did
21:01There they go!
21:03Well they did, 5.13 and Nova goes crazy
21:09That blew the lid off their expectations, awesome to see that reaction
21:15It wasn't about the placement or even about the skate too, but the number, magic number
21:23The icing on the cake
21:26Our next team on the ice, representing Ontario, out of the Burlington Skating Centre
21:34Nexus
21:43This program will combine the traditional flamenco intensity of the song Asturias
21:48With the passion of what this team has called their dance of flames

25:07Such a strong program for Nexus Senior, unfortunately not the performance they were hoping for tonight
25:13But so much potential to grow as the season continues
25:17with the competition this tight and team so strong you can't leave any points on
25:22the table and unfortunately with those falls those were costly errors that they
25:27didn't have room to make tonight the overall quality of the program and the
25:31skating skills and their skill it's there it's at the highest level but
25:36mistakes were made and that's costly on this night yes and and it's important to
25:44remember this is as you mentioned one of the strongest teams in the world
25:47their skating skills are gold standard they there's so many things that this
25:52team does well and we can't always perform to our hundred percent that's
25:57the goal you know that's what we all want as athletes and as coaches but
26:02there's rises and falls in a season and that's part of sport
26:09love this character in their no-hold element so much movement and personality
26:16there and I also enjoyed their travel element they went from the circle to the
26:21s-wheel right into the four spoke happened seamlessly and you can see of
26:26course the panel has to mark what they see tonight but the panel saw some
26:31incredible things and they received top marks for a lot of their elements now of
26:35course the Falls are costly but it's important to remember that the bones of
26:39this program are there and they're sturdy and strong this team is one that
26:44always evolves and continues to improve and grow as the season goes on bobble
26:50through their angle intersection their
26:54costly errors unfortunately overall though this team is they're poised
26:59they're collected they are precise through all of their movements there's
27:03so much for this team to be proud of beyond the number that they might end up
27:08with beautiful spirals I love the unison in their free leg placement not
27:14only is the height the same but the turnout of their free leg is the same
27:17and it's really impactful as they fly through that element finishing strong
27:23you know and for these top teams for these top teams nationals of course is
27:28important no question but they have an international season as well and they're
27:31just working towards that so these challenges will be forgotten in the
27:36weeks to come absolutely they're looking at the kids and cry here there's
27:41a set of siblings on the team and there's also a skater on this team whose
27:45mom skated for the original Nexus senior team
27:48shout out to Sherry Hatfield if you're watching but so amazing to see the
27:52legacy of athletes in this sport and how generations can join senior teams and
27:57and love the sport
28:04anxiously awaiting those marks as you mentioned Ted you can see there's a
28:09little disappointment on their faces and anticipation of scores that you know
28:13they didn't want or they wanted higher you know they had a couple mistakes here
28:18but much more in the season to come and these are the people moments that build
28:22stronger building and stronger position in program and scores please
28:2868.59 that is second in the short program
28:35the short program score 68.59 Nexus is currently in second place
28:43the build tomorrow is a new day
28:48and ready to fight please welcome the final team
29:07their program is a beautiful piece lab OM with many layers but artists and the
29:12pleasure they love this program they perform it well let's take a look
29:42compassion
30:12Oh
30:42this
31:12Oh
31:42Oh
32:13Oh
32:31outstanding performance from Lacey Cremes senior you can tell not only are
32:36they happy but the audience was fully behind them every step of the way
32:43as you mentioned this this is mostly a full returning team is that correct yeah
32:51so it's it's a well-formed team of the 20 skaters they had last year 16 return
32:57this year and that is the first time that they had such a little turnover on
33:02their team their coach Marilyn told me and anytime you could have that many
33:05skaters returning you're just starting from a higher level than any other team
33:10in the world it's incredible to see the level of skill on this team look at this
33:16pair spin not only are they doing a beautiful pair spin with one partner
33:20they then change partners which if you ever talk to a paired team it's hard
33:25enough to learn how to spin with one partner but to be able to do with two
33:28partners incredibly difficult and innovative for this team to be doing
33:33that is the name of the game for these senior teams that are competing for the
33:38world title and that that stronghold in the senior category there's innovation
33:44happening in their programs that the coaches look at the rules and they say
33:47okay that's what we have to do know how do we do even more how do we push the
33:51envelope of this sport to Wow audiences to Wow judges and to push the sport in
33:56new directions and Lacey Prem does that so well year after year beautiful loop
34:02and body positioning through that no hold element great spacing throughout
34:08and just so much attack and speed they're leaning into their circle they're
34:13pushing throughout and they just have such a mastery of the blade there's no
34:18edge out of place they're just such a connected unit absolutely stunning
34:27they're looking here at their angle intersection again they just execute all
34:34of these elements with so much precision course please let not pull a program
34:39absolutely amazing so I send you this score so that's a problem senior and a
34:44sharp program so many nine point five three the sharpest or seventy nine point
34:51five three let's say in first place five almost a five-point improvement
34:58from their last competition that's a huge score they are thrilled and they
35:02should be just four points in the lead boy what brilliant skaters what
35:09brilliant teams just remarkable Elisa this complete I love seeing what the
35:17teams come out with and what they are able to create year after year but how
35:21do they train their parents support their athletes in first place
35:32five three and over with a 75 point Nova one three and Nexus at 68.5 died with
35:39team of 12 in third place 44.74 Nexus
36:02please remain in your seats for the victory ceremony for the junior summary of the top
36:08few minutes Nexus with a strong tango program their consistency over the seasons is absolutely
36:16incredible they're known for their precision for their skating skills and they showed and
36:22demonstrated those beautifully tonight just such an elegance in the way that they skate
36:30and the choreography that they put together costly errors that they'll look to recover
36:35from tomorrow remembering the free program it's a new day turn the page and deliver
36:45so much room for growth and I can't wait to see where this program goes
36:49next up we'll take a look at Nova so much confidence and elegance throughout their
36:56program I felt like it was controlled but so determined they had a job to do they wanted to
37:03place top two at nationals they were able to secure that spot in the short program today
37:09but just so much beautiful skating creativity and precision through all of their movements
37:17and so much speed and attack
37:23finally looking at Les Supremes senior another beautiful beautiful program for them I love that
37:30this team each year chooses a different theme a different way to push the envelope for their
37:35skaters giving their skaters new styles to skate to and new types of music to interpret
37:40it really pushes the skaters to develop not only as a team but as individual skaters
37:47there's so many difficult things that they were attempting and they did so well
37:53well for just finishing up on the senior synchronized skating short program the junior
38:01synchro medals will be presented in just a few moments for tomorrow junior pair free program
38:08and then the junior women the senior man the senior synchro free program the senior pair
38:12short program we hope you'll join us tomorrow for all of us here at skate can for Lisa Carrier
38:16I'm Ted Barton thank you for watching good night everyone
39:17so
39:32thank you
39:47so
40:02you
