Holidaying around Wales and the rest of the UK can be an amazing experience, you can drive there, there are some amazing places to visit, sometimes the weather is quite nice, but some places are apparently not as desirable as others. Newport was recently voted as the worst place to holiday in the UK, so we want to know why.

00:00This is my first day here in Newport, so first impressions, just look at the architecture,
00:12it's a wonderful street, I've just been to the museum, incredible history.
00:21While there might be some things to do in the surrounding areas around Newport, it's
00:24definitely the city centre that lets this place down, which is abundantly clear from
00:28people who live here.
00:29It's not a very clean place, I would say, it needs a lot of cleaning up, and we've got
00:35no cinema, no health centre, leisure centre here, that's all gone, so yeah, it's quite
00:43depressing.
00:44I don't come to town very often, but when I do, it's just the same thing, mostly people
00:55are drunk and drugged up, you know, and that's why I believe it shouldn't be like this.
01:02There are plenty of things to do here in Newport, there are two theatres in the city centre,
01:06a museum, castles scattered around, and of course the iconic, world-renowned Transporter
01:10Bridge, which will be back home to the public later on this year.
01:14The city has hosted a Ryder Cup, a NATO Summit, it'll have the Eisteddfod in a few years'
01:18time, so it's no stranger to a large amount of tourists and visitors coming to the city,
01:22and for the locals, that doesn't seem to be the problem.
01:25The issues are the sorry state of the high street.
01:28I don't think it should be bottom of the list, like I can think of some places that are probably
01:32worse to go, and like the architecture here is really nice and everything.
01:38I think the only reason they say that is because there's like litter on the ground or something,
01:43but yeah, I don't really see why it should be the very bottom.
01:46Oh yeah, it's got a lot of history, you know, we've got a beautiful cathedral, there is
01:51a lot of history in Newport, and like you say, Tredegar House, there are a lot of good
01:56points, there are things to do, but I think you've got nowhere to go.
02:03Despite the poor showing on the pole, and the bad publicity that it could bring to Newport,
02:07locals clearly think that aside from the high street, Newport certainly wouldn't be a bad
02:10place to come and visit.
02:12And quite frankly, it's a lovely city, I'm pleased to be here on my first day, I can
02:20recommend it as certainly a day out, but other than that, well, give me another couple
02:27of hours and I'll be able to say a bit more for you.
02:30Yeah, it is unfit, I think it is a good base to actually stay if you want to have a look
02:36at areas around, say perhaps like the suspension bridge, I know it's not open at the moment,
02:41and there's various different areas around there.
02:43I really think that they should put more advertising out there for different things, and I don't
02:49think they do that here, but everyone knows about the special Newport, and it is a lovely
02:55place to visit, yes.
