00:00Every establishment in the UK which serves food must have a food hygiene rating and display this rating on their premises.
00:07I'm Holly Ogden and I'm a food and drink writer for National World and today
00:11I'm going to be explaining everything there is to know about food hygiene ratings.
00:16Food hygiene ratings are run by the Food Standards Agency and every single establishment in the UK which serves food is
00:24required to have a food hygiene rating and display this on their premises.
00:28Although there are some certain establishments which are exempt such as newsagents who sell food in pre-wrapped packaging.
00:36Establishments that are included are pubs,
00:39restaurants, bars, takeaway, sandwich shops and more.
00:42The way that food hygiene ratings work is a food safety officer from the local authority will visit the premises and
00:49inspect it on a number of factors. Most importantly the food safety officer will make sure that the business is
00:55following food safety laws. Other factors that they will check include how hygienically the food is handled,
01:02the physical condition of the business and how they manage ways of keeping food safe.
01:06Each business will then receive a food hygiene rating out of five with the rating of zero being the worst meaning
01:13urgent improvement is necessary and five being the best which means very good.
01:18These ratings are given to ensure the safety of
01:22customers and if a business does fail their food hygiene rating as they say urgent improvement is necessary.
01:29While there will be certain things the business can do to get that higher rating
01:33it can also mean that the business could stop part of the business such as selling food or could close completely.
01:41Businesses must display their food hygiene rating and you can also find out online
01:46what they have by visiting the Food Standards Agency website.
