00:03:14well welcome to Halifax I guess it's a little strange talking to you this way
00:03:19but it's fun seeing you in the studio it looks amazing things here in Halifax
00:03:25are great we had a full day of practices yesterday first day of setup in the rink
00:03:29everything looks great and ready to go so yeah it's it's amazing to be here and
00:03:35start this competition season Joanie we saw yesterday about 1,500 school
00:03:40children in the stands screaming and yelling for the competitors tell us a
00:03:44little bit about that program and the enthusiasm the ticket sales how it's
00:03:47going on in Halifax so it was so much fun having so many school children here
00:03:55yesterday they had posters they were cheering they were they seem
00:03:59knowledgeable I could hear them talking about the elements they were seeing on
00:04:02the ice lots happening Nam Nguyen was here to entertain them I understand
00:04:07ticket sales are also great here so we're looking forward to you know a
00:04:11full house they've updated this facility since we've been here last time so it
00:04:16looks amazing and I don't know if you've seen but there's a giant moose head that
00:04:20hangs from the rafters and it's garnering quite a bit of attention well
00:04:24there are two things that I noticed first of all the moose head I wondered
00:04:27why is that on my screen I couldn't figure out where it was coming from and
00:04:30also the seats used to be orange in that building which were quite bright but they
00:04:34look beautiful now very comfortable that's for sure also we have two world
00:04:39champions that will be there were actually three world champions at that
00:04:42event Elia Malina and he skated last week in Skate America I covered that he
00:04:47did a great job and one of your favorites Kari Sakamoto yes as you know
00:04:53I'm a huge Kari Sakamoto fan she is here she looks amazing she's somebody who
00:04:58tends to build through the season but she already looks you know very good
00:05:02she's also blonde but we are also just you know 150 days away from Worlds and I
00:05:09say just it seems like a long time but it's also an important World
00:05:15Championship so I'm amazed at how great the skaters are looking for this early
00:05:20in the season yeah it was pretty incredible last week in Skate America I
00:05:25was also surprised at how the quality of the programs there were some mistakes
00:05:29here and there technically early on in the season of course but the programs
00:05:32were absolutely outstanding looking for that also here in week number two now
00:05:36the third world champs we were talking about of course Deanna Stadlato-Dudek
00:05:40and Maxime Deschamps from Canada they're looking to get back on track they they
00:05:45were silver medalists in Oberstdorf Germany a little bit earlier their
00:05:48season so that's gonna be exciting Joanie it's gonna be very exciting like
00:05:53I said every category everybody is looking good
00:05:57Elia Malina was not here as I mentioned for practice he's had a busy schedule
00:06:01already so but you know the practices and the competition are different we've
00:06:06watched a lot of practices thinking a lot's gonna happen but I'm looking
00:06:10forward to an exciting event well there are also some great skaters from other
00:06:14countries around the world not major skating nations but they're turning out
00:06:18some top high-performance athletes and that's been exciting to see that on the
00:06:22junior and senior Grand Prix series so let's get started on day number one we
00:06:27talked about pairs very short program coming up right after this
00:06:57oh
00:07:09he's lit up the crowd
00:07:13oh
00:07:25oh my gosh wow that was magnificent
00:07:43Oh
00:08:00just stunningly elegant
00:08:06that champion spirit right there
00:08:13you

00:11:21there's a healing element in salt in sweat in tears in the ocean in Halifax
00:11:28being surrounded by salty water and fog is just enough grit to help polish away
00:11:33the pressure of to-do lists to just make time for things that feel good to let
00:11:38the salt cure whatever ails you Halifax could be the break that finally leaves
00:11:44you feeling like you took one as long as you're willing to rub salt in your
00:11:48wounds
00:11:53yeah
00:12:03I bring the pain
00:12:15go
00:12:18hello everyone welcome to Halifax Nova Scotia week number two on the ISU senior
00:12:37Grand Prix circuit I'm Ted Barton thank you for joining us perish your program
00:12:42coming up in just a few moments and to help us through that Kirsten Moore
00:12:46Towers three-time national champion Olympian world champion team member
00:12:50Kirsten welcome to the show thank you so much for having me I have to give you a
00:12:56small correction I am four-time national champion I only correct you because I'm
00:13:00proud of all of those okay I'm sorry about that so Kirsten all right you got
00:13:06me already geez I'm down by one let's get started we've been watching the
00:13:10practice session the last two days what do you see in the prayers but coming up
00:13:14you know what I'm so excited this is sure to be a really great event we have
00:13:20obviously clear leaders in defending world champions Deanna stiletto do deck
00:13:25and next in Deschamps but we have a number of teams that could end up on the
00:13:29podium at this competition I think we're about to see some really great skating
00:13:33now one of the things that we talked about is how great the programs have
00:13:37been so far so early in the season I was covering the skate America from Allen
00:13:42Texas last week and I was shocked at the readiness of these athletes so early on
00:13:47yes there were some technical mistake that's to be expected this early but
00:13:51basically everyone's in good shape and as it was mentioned it's not that far
00:13:56away from the world championships and the Olympic Games next year you're right
00:13:59and this will be definitely a season where these teams who are looking to
00:14:03really make a name for themselves or continue all of the work that they've
00:14:07done over the quadrennial will really be trying to set themselves up for a superb
00:14:11Olympic season now of course it's not riding on this year but absolutely what
00:14:16they can do this season throughout their events will help them on their journey
00:14:20let's talk a little bit about Deanna and Maxine now the world champions last year
00:14:24we all watched that in Montreal was so exciting the building went berserk the
00:14:28emotions the tears were flowing everywhere and it was a wonderful moment
00:14:32time has passed now you wear the burden of the world title on your shoulders and
00:14:38we all know about the age not just of Deanna but also of Maxine he's 32 years
00:14:42old and so it is amazing what they have accomplished so far how hard is it
00:14:47Kirsten to be the hunted rather than the hunters you know what Ted I have never
00:14:52been world champion but I can only imagine how difficult it would be to be
00:14:58hunted at such a degree as this I have seen a number of interviews though from
00:15:02Deanna and Max stating that they know that they are the 2024 world champions
00:15:08forever they are not approaching this season with the mindset of defending a
00:15:12title all they're trying to do is to be better than they were last season which
00:15:16I think is a superb mindset to take into their next events to help them to be the
00:15:22best that they can be without all of that pressure in your opinion Kirsten
00:15:27what will make them better you know what more of the same I think what the
00:15:33audience doesn't often know is that it can be so much pressure to create
00:15:38something better or as good as what you have created in the previous seasons and
00:15:43so I think we may see a little bit of that that they really want to make sure
00:15:47that they're always upping what they have done in the past but what they did
00:15:51last season was so superb really set themselves up as at front runners as
00:15:56front runners excuse me actually at this event last season and so I think more of
00:16:01the same making sure their free program is just as trained and can as consistent
00:16:06as their short program and I think should they do that they'll be able to
00:16:10continue to compete with the best in the world now given equal circumstances and
00:16:15all the teams skate clean let's say technically they all pretty much do the
00:16:19same elements they have the level level for lifts and jumps and spins and all
00:16:24that kind of stuff so it's really the programs that might make the difference
00:16:27in this case if is equal circumstances don't you think absolutely the programs
00:16:32and the amount of grade of execution that they can earn on each of their
00:16:36elements I think we often underestimate how much the GOE of course that is the
00:16:42grade of execution that the judges are awarding on each element which is the
00:16:45quality points as we know these can earn us so many additional points to get
00:16:51them out on top let's go down to ice level and see the skaters as they
00:16:56enters we get started and week number two on the ISU senior Grand Prix and
00:17:01that is going to be an exciting event let's go to the ice as they get
00:17:05introduced
00:17:15there's the first team the Katarina Ganesh and Dmitriy Shikharov
00:17:21from Poland and from the u.s. Emily Chan and Spencer Akira Howell
00:17:28and there they are from Canada
00:17:32okay here we go six-minute warm-up I know we've talked about this in the past
00:17:46Kirsten everybody has their pattern it's well rehearsed when you have that
00:17:52introduction at center ice and all of a sudden you have the six-minute warm-ups
00:17:55getting started are the nerves there absolutely I think the nerves are always
00:18:01there but I do believe that these skaters feel probably the most nervous
00:18:05before they get out on the ice this is their comfort zone this is what they do
00:18:09every day obviously not with this level of adrenaline but I think once they
00:18:14start moving this is when they really start to get comfortable let's take a
00:18:18look at each one of the teams of this first team we don't know much about
00:18:22there from Uzbekistan and there's not a lot of background what do you know about
00:18:26this team I well I see Nina Moser at the boards with them Nina a very renowned
00:18:33coach from Russia of many Russian pair champions this team actually used to
00:18:38compete for Russia it is their first season competing together for Uzbekistan
00:18:42they come to this event really with those strengths that Russian pairs often
00:18:47have very big throws very big twist great lifts lots of speed
00:18:53and Yulia and Michael we this is I don't want a new team we've seen them before a
00:18:59little bit but what's your background on this team yeah you know this team is in
00:19:03their second season together but we've seen Yulia in particular for a number of
00:19:07years she's been a pair skater with several different partners she used to
00:19:11compete actually for Hungary now it's representing Poland with her new
00:19:15partner Mikhail just reminder to those in the live audience there in Halifax
00:19:21listening to spark bug radio we hope you enjoy you can send us questions on
00:19:25our Instagram accounts Ted Barton 75 and Kirsten what is yours and mine is at
00:19:32Kirsten empty and we'd love to talk to you we wish we were in the building with
00:19:36you but the energy surely is reaching me all the way in Vancouver Emily Chen
00:19:42Spencer Akira how what's the news on them you know it's had I'm really
00:19:47excited for this team they really have struggled with injury for the past
00:19:50several seasons and my sources tell me that this is the first year that Spencer
00:19:55is able to train elements without pain in his shoulder so I think that we will
00:20:00see more of the team that we saw a couple years ago before they were marred
00:20:05with so much injury and setback they really are a team that thrives on the
00:20:10performance the skating skill the emotional connection and actually have a
00:20:14huge hand in choreographing their programs themselves which I found very
00:20:18fascinating and there is Kelly Adler and Luka Etie from Canada they were at
00:20:24the World Championships in Montreal what an experience yes huge learning
00:20:30opportunity for them to be at a World Championships and not only their home
00:20:34country but really their home city they had so much family so many friends in
00:20:39the stands and we continue to see the progressions of this team they've been
00:20:43together for a number of years but we are still quite young their coach
00:20:50Stephanie Valois tells me that this year they've spent a lot of time working on
00:20:54their program components so they're really hoping to see an increase in
00:20:57points on that side of their report card stepping on the ice of the World
00:21:02Championship is like stepping on your first hockey game of the NHL it's nerve
00:21:07wracking and it's a different level it's the same game but a different level of
00:21:11anticipation so but they've got that under their belt now and they're getting
00:21:14experience we hope that they have another very positive year with a more
00:21:19comfort I would say going in for the high level competitions that's right
00:21:24skaters starting to come together now practicing more of their pair elements
00:21:28often at the beginning of the six-minute warm-up we see skaters skating apart
00:21:33warming up their jumping elements this quite an interesting take on the short
00:21:38program lift I don't believe we'll see a different another one that looks like
00:21:42this but the short program lift this year is classified as a group for lift
00:21:47it must have a hand-to-hand takeoff so you'll notice all skaters are women are
00:21:53being lifted into the air by their partners with hand-to-hand grip and then
00:21:57they can change into any which position that suits them just a reminder for
00:22:02those watching online and those in the building as well when you watch the
00:22:07event you'll see in the upper left-hand part of the screen a graphic and on that
00:22:11graphic it'll have the scores of the current leader the technical scores and
00:22:15the technical scores of the current skaters you'll see the elements come in
00:22:18what to pay attention to because that's a lot to look at are the little lights
00:22:21above it a green light above in the order of the elements means positive
00:22:27dewey more points have been added to that element because the quality was
00:22:31very well done and more points though there's a scale that more points will be
00:22:36added to it if you see a red light it means there's been an error and they
00:22:39must reduce so they have to take points away so just keep an eye on that as
00:22:43graphic on the upper left hand part of the screen that's right skaters we're
00:22:49looking we'll be looking for all green little boxes in that upper left corner
00:22:54that's always the goal and a clean short program cannot win you a competition of
00:22:59course but it is so helpful to set you up both mentally and in the standings
00:23:04for a great free program it's so good to see people coming into the building
00:23:10and I understand there's a great this is the first event so we're not going to
00:23:15see it full by any means yet but you know hopefully to rekindle an interest
00:23:19across our country about not only about our Canadian athletes mostly for them as
00:23:24well but also about the sport of figure skating it is extraordinary they wear
00:23:28nice costumes escape to nice music and we want to make it all look easy but
00:23:32this is one of the most difficult school sports on the planet but it's
00:23:36hidden behind all the views and you know it's head I'm sure you can attest as
00:23:41well that it's so different to watch skating on in live in person as opposed
00:23:47to watching it online it really is so impressive and so much faster than it's
00:23:51able to show through a screen so we really hope that more and more people
00:23:55will come in person to cheer on these athletes but on the screens you see a
00:24:01little bit more inside the program with the emotion of the athlete during the
00:24:04performance you lose the speed absolutely but this you get oh wow look
00:24:08at that tear or look at that emotion or whatever anyways it is what it is here
00:24:12we go our first team represents Uzbekistan the Katarina Ganesh and
00:24:20Dimitri Shigrin now their personal best in the short program sixty four point
00:24:29six two
00:25:20Oh
00:25:50Oh
00:26:20Oh
00:26:50Oh
00:27:21Oh
00:27:29well a nice start to this competition for sure I'm sure a Katarina will be a
00:27:34little bit bummed she's been really nailing her side-by-side solo jumps in
00:27:38the practice so we saw maybe a little bit of nerves there from her but a nice
00:27:42recovery for sure with their throat triple flip yeah perhaps a little I
00:27:47don't want to say intimidating but nerve-wracking for this team relatively
00:27:50unknown here in Canada at a Grand Prix event exciting but also a little bit
00:27:58nerve-wracking very solid team you can see the technique on all the elements
00:28:01there were some flaws a little bit for a little bit for it on the throw just a
00:28:06level two on the back outside desk borrow a couple levels perhaps missed
00:28:10but let's take a look at the replays here Christian as we mentioned in the
00:28:17warm-up huge triple twist here I believe in at a level four so earning four
00:28:22features in that element really well done here though watch it Katarina into
00:28:29her side-by-side triple toe a little bit forward has to put her right hand down
00:28:33there which will just earn her a little bit of a decrease in score for the
00:28:37grade of execution but a nice recovery gets a free like back very fast on the
00:28:43triple flip watch this hand-to-hand entry on this lift but then changes into
00:28:47a split lift which I don't believe I've seen from a group for entry will
00:28:52definitely set them apart from the field it is unique to them
00:28:57here they're back outside spiral names because the woman is fighting on a back
00:29:03edge it is very difficult your speed and tension in this spiral
00:29:13looking at their side-by-side combinations and though we only see a
00:29:17Katarina currently I was really impressed with how close together they
00:29:21were doing these spins in the practice earlier today overall some great
00:29:29elements art is of course subjective figure skating is art at the music
00:29:40choices that you select sometimes can make the audience feel sometimes not as
00:29:45much let's see the score they're looking for sixty four point six to their
00:29:49personal best best this year and they are gonna fall just a bit short there
00:29:57with a sixty three point five three for a catarina Dimitri they are the first
00:30:00team out in this event I think they can be proud of their Grand Prix debut our
00:30:16next team represents Poland 28 year old Julia Chichina and 25 year old Michael
00:30:23was the coach by Nolan Seagart and Dimitri seven have a hundred they have a
00:30:32sixty point six four personal best in the short program and they'll skate to
00:30:37moderation by Florence and the machine
00:30:41Oh
00:30:44do I look moderate to you sip it slowly and pay attention I just have to see it
00:30:54through
00:30:58validation
00:31:01you
00:31:03well me to love you in moderation
00:31:08you think you're talking to
00:31:31I never made it with moderation no I never understood
00:31:53the feeling was
00:31:56and I took everything I could
00:32:00can't hold it back I can't take the tension
00:32:03I'm trying to be the rule
00:32:07well me to love you in moderation
00:32:11well don't you know I wish I could
00:32:15and by your hand in a house of cards
00:32:18little girl who do you think you are
00:32:22you think you are
00:32:52I just can't
00:32:54I just can't
00:32:56cause I don't see the words
00:32:59I don't see the words
00:33:03I'm still trying to figure out if it always always always has to hurt
00:33:10you
00:33:36I loved that
00:33:37Ted I really enjoyed that performance you asked me for some facts about this
00:33:41team in the warm-up and I like I neglected to tell you that they were a
00:33:44last-minute call to this event they did not get notified that they were
00:33:48selected to do Skate Canada until last Friday when they actually were in the
00:33:52midst of another competition so obviously not optimal preparation but I
00:33:58really believe they've come here and made the best of this situation well
00:34:03Yulia just lights up the ice up with her expression you can see her there a
00:34:06little fist pump and she is thrilled not only to be here but with that
00:34:09performance as well that's just delighted sometimes you know it works in
00:34:14your favor when you get caught up unexpectedly you say well well no
00:34:17expectations let's go and get another experience in competitive skating
00:34:21because you can be a great skater practice you need the experience in
00:34:25competition super job that's right I really loved the choreography and their
00:34:30connection to the music and to each other they are like we mentioned a
00:34:34relatively new team so we'll continue working on the skating skills but I
00:34:40thought the transitions in the choreography were really superb here
00:34:44they're triple twist split arms down scene catch and I believe we would have
00:34:49seen steps going in here a look at their side-by-side triple toe loops very
00:34:57slightly off time but that's being picky throw triple flip Yulia sometimes
00:35:04gets a little scratchy on her landing I thought she did a pretty good job today
00:35:09yeah the child in three turns into the subway side combination spin keeping
00:35:16that in unison one of the most difficult parts of that of the program really
00:35:20isn't it it really is watch this entry this is so cool difficult entry into
00:35:26their hand-to-hand group for lift they're a change of position Yulia in a
00:35:34difficult variation position Mikhail on one arm I really loved that lift it was
00:35:38a highlight for me you know in all the things all the items that Kirsten is
00:35:42mentioning right now they're called features and those features add up to be
00:35:46the levels of difficulty so we don't have the time to tell you all the
00:35:50features on an element so but notice that there are difficult features
00:35:56throughout the element which added up to a maximum of a level four of difficulty
00:36:01that's right look at that smile that is a smile of joy to be there and with the
00:36:08skate nice remarkable people on and off the ice perhaps not relevant but Yulia
00:36:15speaks five languages which I think is just so incredible it's unbelievable
00:36:21let's take a look at their scores they have a 60.64 is their personal best they
00:36:25have a new season's best of 60.87
00:36:29currently in second place can't ask for much more than a clean skate no that's
00:36:45the best you can do at the moment then you go back to work our next team
00:36:49represents the United States of America 27 year old Emily Chan a 28 year old
00:36:54Spencer Akira how you were mentioning they were off quite a bit with injuries
00:37:03yeah really working through a shoulder injury for the past couple of seasons
00:37:07but now the shoulder is recovered they've been able to train fully and
00:37:11healthy it's getting to some Elvis Presley they're looking to top the score
00:37:1570.23 here in week number two
00:38:16No, I just want to hold you
00:38:22Give a little time to me
00:38:24Burn this out

00:40:05My, my, my, my
00:40:07Give me love
00:40:17Ah, well a beautiful new short program to Give Me Love by Ed Sheeran
00:40:22Disappointing on the side-by-side solo gem for Emily
00:40:25She had been struggling with that in practice a little bit today and yesterday
00:40:30But something I learned ahead of this competition, Ted
00:40:33Is that Emily and Spencer have a huge hand in the choreography of their programs
00:40:38They have a lot of ideas, they work on the choreography
00:40:41And then bring them to their coach who helps them to fine tune it
00:40:45And make it special
00:40:47And we really do see that commitment to the music
00:40:51And to the sensitivity of the choreography
00:40:55As the music changes, they change too
00:40:57And it really makes them so special
00:41:00And in your career, did you have, I mean obviously an athlete, a high performance athlete
00:41:04Has some input, but they may not start the choreography
00:41:07What about you?
00:41:08You know what, I actually didn't at all
00:41:11Often choreographers, Julie Marcotte would ask me and my partner Michael to improv
00:41:17And we hated it, we just wanted her to tell us what to do
00:41:20Which is interesting because I do a lot of choreography now
00:41:24But Spencer and Emily really are very obviously such creative souls
00:41:29And bring that magic to the ice with them
00:41:32And when the elements hit, it is so special
00:41:35Helps them own the program
00:41:37Take us through this
00:41:39Triple twist, I believe in at a level 3
00:41:42So achieving 3 features for that element, pretty well done
00:41:46This a new throw for them, throw triple flip
00:41:49We've seen in the past throw loop in the solo
00:41:51So the flip will earn them more points
00:41:53Watch Emily here, little quick on her take off
00:41:57And opens up in the air, she only does a double jump
00:42:00So the team will only get credit for a double toe loop today
00:42:05Here they're back outside
00:42:07Sorry, go ahead Ted
00:42:10Even though the one partner does the triple and another one does the double
00:42:14The team only gets the value of the double
00:42:16Go ahead
00:42:17That's right
00:42:19And here into their lift, we saw the hand to hand entry
00:42:22Emily goes into a platter position
00:42:24And here changes, she's in a difficult variation
00:42:27Spencer on one arm for two revolutions
00:42:30Their step sequence, we're seeing pieces of it here
00:42:33This was so special in practice this morning
00:42:37Not quite the same effect yet
00:42:39Often when the athletes get tired
00:42:41They don't perform as much or skate quite to the best of their ability when they're fresh
00:42:47But throughout the season they will continue to work on their stamina
00:42:50And this is only their first competition of the season
00:42:53So just a starting point
00:42:55But I really believe this program is special
00:42:59Let's take a look at the short program score of 61.04
00:43:04And that will put Emily and Spencer currently in second place
00:43:18You can hear in the background the voices starting to increase in volume
00:43:2418-year-old Kellyanne Lauren
00:43:2624-year-old Luca Etkin from Canada
00:43:28Last year, the world championships in Montreal
00:43:31They broke through, gained experience
00:43:33And they have a personal best of 60.97 from this season
00:43:40And they're looking to continue their growth at this high level
00:43:45They'll skate to separate ways
00:44:15You need you

00:51:31the lifting action of the men using their legs a lot and following through
00:51:37with their arms and so everything of course down off ice for safety and and
00:51:41then as Kristen said just slowly integrating that onto the ice as well so
00:51:45keep those questions coming in an Instagram we'll answer them along the
00:51:49way as we take a look at Anastasia they've had a great career both in
00:51:52juniors and in seniors this is I believe their second or third year and senior
00:51:56covered them a lot in juniors they were always in the medals in fact I think
00:52:00they won their first Junior Grand Prix title just about two years ago and they
00:52:08call Canada home now have relocated with their coach they wanted to train with
00:52:15Deanna Stiletto Dudek and Maxime Deschamps they say that the environment
00:52:19in Montreal is so fantastic for them teams pushing each other always
00:52:24motivated and have continued to progress here in Canada now environment
00:52:31is everything I mean you you need to learn your skills coaches will teach you
00:52:35but being are surrounded by your competitors and those better than you
00:52:38only help you to you know to watch visualize and work towards take a look
00:52:44at Anna Anika Hawk and Robert Gunkel from Germany
00:52:49Anika and Robert train at a huge pair school in Bergamo Italy they have around
00:52:5513 pair teams there and a number of coaches all working together for the
00:53:00betterment of these athletes and really an international pair school obviously
00:53:04Anika and Robert represent Germany they are German but training in Italy at this
00:53:10hub of pair skating where they're doing great great work you know Kirsten it
00:53:14wasn't long ago we were talking about how thin pair skating was both in the
00:53:19junior ranks and in some cases the senior ranks as well that's not the case
00:53:22anymore there are more pair teams around and it's kind of you saying this to me a
00:53:27little earlier the top five or six or seven teams but there's really strong
00:53:30teams behind them as well that's right the the sheer volume in pair skating has
00:53:36improved so much the the number of teams who are producing fantastic elements and
00:53:42programs and setting themselves up for great finishes at World Championships as
00:53:48far more in my opinion than in years past you're taking a look at Deanna and
00:53:55Max skating into their throw triple loop beautifully done and we will see Ted as
00:54:04we see teams who are higher ranked in the world perhaps with more experience
00:54:08we'll see the grade of execution the quality with which these teams are doing
00:54:13this element these elements will increase we see Deanna and Max entering
00:54:17their throw with tons of speed and and her landing position carrying almost
00:54:22more speed than she entered the element in with and these are a number of some
00:54:27of the things that the judges are looking for when they're giving the
00:54:30marks for these yeah and for those folks wearing this smart bug radio listening
00:54:35to this broadcast to recognize Julie the quality of it as the Christian just
00:54:40mentioned the speed going in and the speed coming out should be somewhat
00:54:43equal don't see a lot of snow flying and whatnot and kind of an effortless
00:54:47execution of the elements of course so those would be added points to it so
00:54:51great of execution the quality probably can see that and certainly you can see
00:54:56false and other major mistakes as well we spoke earlier Ted about how great of
00:55:02execution is so important especially in a short in a short program when many of
00:55:07the elements are required a lot of these teams are doing the same element so the
00:55:12level of difficulty at which they perform them as well as the quality that
00:55:17they're doing them makes a big impact on the scores that they're earning yeah we
00:55:21talked we've talked a little bit in the past about the difference of pair
00:55:25skating is the elements take a long time they cover the whole ice generally or a
00:55:29longer period of time per element so therefore the content of the program
00:55:33components those three components which really you know score the skating skills
00:55:39and the performance level and the composition of the program they have
00:55:43less time it's not like ice dance where it's all about performance and technical
00:55:47elements this has a little less time to do that top teams will have a story
00:55:51perhaps and a lot of emotion in there but it is more difficult because the
00:55:55length of the elements and the time it takes that's right and as you mentioned
00:56:01the top teams will tell us a story they will make us feel things with their
00:56:05quality of movement and style of movement and how the things that they're
00:56:11doing relate to the piece of music that they've chosen everything will be
00:56:15intentional with these top teams and I read it in an interview with actually
00:56:19the Australian team on the ice of Anastasia and Hector they mentioned that
00:56:24when they were in junior it was all about getting the elements done and now
00:56:27it is so much more about the skating skills and the performance and the
00:56:31components there we saw sorry Ted I was just gonna say there we saw beautiful
00:56:36triple toe from Deanna no question the juniors are in development stages so
00:56:42it's all about the technical elements some have the programs they're beautiful
00:56:45but here in seniors you expect to kind of have equality both technical and
00:56:50program components as well we'll talk further about the program components a
00:56:54little bit later in the show as the lineup to get off the ice begins and a
00:57:02first team will take to the ice loop number two
00:57:14and there they are representing the Netherlands 22-year-old Daria Danilova
00:57:2126-year-old Michelle Siva coached by Dimitri Salvin Fedor Klimov they have a
00:57:3361.24 personal best back in the in 2023 World Championships they'd like to
00:57:42improve on that score here the first event of the season for this team
00:57:50Grand Prix event that is as they'll skate to give me love by a chair
00:58:20give me love by a chair
00:58:34Oh
00:58:39Lady I've been waking up alone
00:58:47Paints by the teardrops on my shirt
00:58:55Told you I'd let them go
00:58:59And that I'll find my corner
00:59:06Maybe tonight I'll call you
00:59:10After my blood
00:59:13No, I just wanna hold you
00:59:17Give a little time to me
00:59:20We'll burn this out
00:59:22We'll play high and seek
00:59:24To turn this around
00:59:26All I want is the taste that your lips allow
00:59:30My my, my my
00:59:33Oh, give me love
00:59:34My my, my my
00:59:37Oh, give me love
00:59:38My my, my my
00:59:41Oh, give me love

01:04:18Ma-ma-ya, ma-ma-ya, ma-ma-ya, give me love, love
01:04:42Let's start over again
01:04:55Why can't we start it over again?
01:05:11Just let us start it over again
01:05:27When will you be here?
01:05:34It's time you came
01:05:44Give me why
01:05:51It's our last chance
01:05:58To forgive ourselves
01:06:10I never believed that I would concede
01:06:13And let someone trample on me
01:06:15You strung me along, I thought I was strong
01:06:18But you were just passing light in me
01:06:20I've opened my eyes and counted the lies
01:06:22And now it is clearer to me
01:06:24You are just a user and an abuser
01:06:27Leaving for good
01:06:28I've opened my eyes and counted the lies
01:06:30And now it is clearer to me
01:06:32You are just a user and an abuser
01:06:35And I refuse to take it
01:06:39Who won't stand down?
01:06:41I'm growing stronger
01:06:43Who won't stand down?
01:06:45I move no longer
01:06:48Who won't stand down?
01:06:50You've used me for too long
01:06:54Not too long
01:07:18I've opened my eyes and counted the lies
01:07:21And now it is clearer to me
01:07:23You are just a user and an abuser
01:07:25Leaving for good
01:07:27I've opened my eyes and counted the lies
01:07:29And now it is clearer to me
01:07:31You've used me for too long
01:07:33Not too long
01:07:35I've opened my eyes and counted the lies
01:07:37And now it is clearer to me
01:07:39You've used me for too long
01:07:41Not too long
01:07:43I've opened my eyes and counted the lies
01:07:45And now it is clearer to me
01:07:47You've used me for too long
01:07:49Not too long
01:07:51I've opened my eyes and counted the lies
01:07:53And now it is clearer to me
01:07:55You've used me for too long
01:07:57Not too long
01:07:59I've opened my eyes and counted the lies

01:08:05Not too long
01:08:07I've opened my eyes and counted the lies
01:08:09And now it is clearer to me

01:13:12Well, certainly a lively performance by Annika
01:13:16and Robert, they've recycled this program from last season.
01:13:19and I can totally see why it is such a crowd
01:13:23pleasing performance and it's easy to get behind.
01:13:25The crowd connects to this music
01:13:27and again, Robert appear to be having a good time
01:13:29and so I see why this has been a successful vehicle
01:13:32for them and pretty well executed today.
01:13:35A few missed levels here and there,
01:13:37but overall pretty good.
01:13:39I'm sure you can attest to this
01:13:41that if you have a piece of music that energizes you,
01:13:43it doesn't have to be high energy music,
01:13:45but something that really hits and connects with you,
01:13:49then you bring that energy out into the performance
01:13:51and people get to benefit from that
01:13:53and that's what we saw here last year and this year.
01:13:56Go ahead.
01:13:57Here, their triple twist.
01:13:59I believe ended a three, so missing one feature there.
01:14:02Perhaps Robert's arms did not get below his shoulders.
01:14:06Could have also been the twist.
01:14:07We'd have to take another look at it.
01:14:09The side-by-side jumps are often the key for this team.
01:14:13They did them so well today,
01:14:14but this, watch Annika's left foot.
01:14:17You see it pretty firmly on the ice.
01:14:19Obviously, we want to be landing on the right foot cleanly
01:14:23with lots of glide.
01:14:26Here, their group four lift.
01:14:30Change of position.
01:14:32I believe the technical panel will be reviewing that lift
01:14:35to ensure that they achieved all four features.
01:14:41As well as this spin at the end, a little bit off unison.
01:14:47We want to leave the judges with a great impression,
01:14:49so especially when the element is happening last,
01:14:51we really want to make sure that that element is done
01:14:55very well.
01:14:56Yeah, that's a nice scarf.
01:14:57There you go.
01:14:58That is a nice scarf.
01:14:59Well, they would- I spoke to this team's,
01:15:01sorry, go ahead, Ted.
01:15:03No, they would need a 64.82 to take the lead.
01:15:07Let's take a look at their short program score.
01:15:09It's a 64.82, there it is, just by one 100.
01:15:13So you take the lead.
01:15:14Season's best for Annika and Robert.
01:15:17Whoa, that's close.
01:15:18And there you can see the results, 64.82, 64.81.
01:15:22Wow.
01:15:23Well, essentially that's a tie.
01:15:26It's extremely close at the top.
01:15:28Yeah, every little point counts.
01:15:30And there they are, the current world champions from Canada,
01:15:3441-year-old Diana Stiletto-Dudek
01:15:37and 32-year-old Maxime Deschamps.
01:15:40Incredible.
01:15:41They skate here back at home and a home crowd,
01:15:44just like Montreal last year.
01:15:46That's exciting.
01:15:49Well, they have a 77.48 personal best,
01:15:5372.42 is their season's best.
01:15:56And they'll skate the short program to Crazy In Love.
01:15:59They'll skate the short program to Crazy In Love.
01:16:29Oh, oh, oh, oh, oh, oh, oh, oh, oh, oh, oh, oh, oh, oh, oh, oh, oh, oh, oh, oh, oh, oh, oh, oh, oh, oh, oh, oh, oh, oh, oh, oh, oh, oh, oh, oh, oh, oh, oh, oh, oh, oh, oh, oh, oh, oh, oh, oh, oh, oh, oh, oh, oh, oh, oh, oh, oh, oh, oh, oh, oh, oh, oh, oh, oh, oh, oh, oh, oh, oh, oh, oh, oh, oh, oh, oh, oh, oh, oh, oh, oh, oh, oh, oh, oh, oh, oh, oh, oh, oh, oh, oh, oh, oh, oh, oh, oh, oh, oh, oh, oh, oh, oh, oh, oh, oh, oh, oh, oh, oh, oh
01:16:59I've been playin' myself

01:21:28we spoke earlier ted about how it is so difficult to defend a world title but not only that to come
01:21:36into the following season after you've had such success and to ensure that you live up to the
01:21:41expectations that not only the public has but that you have for themselves and we see dnn max
01:21:47continuing to reach these high levels yeah and you know it's interesting for those folks in
01:21:53these stands and those around the world that have never skated or never certainly done pair skating
01:21:58i you know we talk about it you talk about it in such an easy way oh yeah you know but it is
01:22:04incredibly difficult talk about a little bit about nerves for the woman like being lifted or is that
01:22:10so exhilarating that you don't mind getting up there you don't mind being thrown it's just
01:22:14natural for you well you know what ted it really depends on the person for me i really i loved
01:22:20being lifted the twist was certainly not my favorite but i really loved the lifts and the
01:22:25throws and i think though there may be some nerves early on when you're learning these elements as you
01:22:31get more comfortable and and you form a trust and a bond with your partner uh you can you can learn
01:22:36to really enjoy them and i think we see that with diana for sure so why was the twist not your
01:22:42favorite um i just never quite got the hang of it ted not for lack of trying um tons of effort
01:22:52but just was never my strong suit for sure as we take a look at the top three teams so far
01:22:58anastasia gulabeva and hector geotopolis more they had a good skate juniors moving into seniors
01:23:04there is the second place finishers in the short program anika hawk and robert kanko and that was
01:23:10a nice clean twist there for the start their program as they come around for the triple
01:23:17saucos good work nicely done then the throw triple loop a little bit later it was solid except the
01:23:24free leg touching the ice that will be a reduction with great lift entry here as he covers pretty
01:23:30much the width of the ice as he carries that lift across and then the leaders after the short program
01:23:37current world champions diana stiletto dudek maxine de shop there's the twist there's a split
01:23:42hands inside good catch down the ice for the triple toe loops max gets the free leg back in
01:23:49time well done throw triple loop same thing for diana gets the free leg back just in time those
01:23:56are the two small small little errors but still had a great score as they take the lead after the
01:24:02short program and what an example of what getting the highest level on each of your leveled elements
01:24:11can do for your total score yeah no question well welcome back to the studio here in vancouver with
01:24:23well you're just a few blocks away from us really here at your home that's for sure uh kirsten so
01:24:29your overall impression here this is week number two in the senior grand prix what do you feel
01:24:33about first of all pair skating overall how it's growing and also the standard that we see early on
01:24:39in the senior grand prix pair skating ted in my opinion is in such a great place we had fantastic
01:24:46skating today in the short program we had fantastic skating last week at skate america the skate
01:24:51america short program didn't see one fall deduction out of eight teams and so we're really seeing the
01:24:58impact of what stronger skating throughout the world is how it's having an effect on other
01:25:05training locations and other teams continuing to push themselves to ensure that they
01:25:10maintain their own spot as one of the best teams in the world and as viewers we really are reaping
01:25:17the benefits of that now we've talked a little bit about the depth now the more teams are competitive
01:25:22both at the upper group let's say the top seven of the world and and the group behind that from
01:25:27you know six down to 12 what makes the difference now they all do pretty much the same elements
01:25:32so moving forward toward the world championships what's going to determine the difference
01:25:37in the end of the day at worlds yeah it's a great question and the difference lies as we were
01:25:42mentioning in the grade of execution and the quality with which the elements are done but also
01:25:48in the connection to one another the skating skill the performance the musicality uh the
01:25:54choreography really the composition of the programs that these skaters are bringing to
01:26:00the events and as they continue to go throughout the season and continue to build one performance
01:26:05from one performance to another we will see the impact that that has on their final showing at
01:26:12the world championships well it's been a good start to the pairs events so far tomorrow will
01:26:18be the free skate of course we'll hope for the best for diana and maxine that's going to be
01:26:23exciting indeed up next will be the women's short program 2018 world champion
01:26:32kari sakamoto i got you no not 2018 kari sakamoto world champion will be in this there's no question
01:26:39that caitlin osmond 2018 world champion will be joining me jeez i forgot her name there for a
01:26:43second i'm gonna be in trouble that's for sure make sure you stay with us women's short program
01:26:48coming right up
