00:00Civic Police volunteer Sanjay Roy has today been convicted of raping and murdering a female
00:07trainee doctor while she slept on a long shift in a Kolkata hospital.
00:12The 31-year-old was found dead in a seminar hall at the RGK Medical College and Hospital
00:18in August last year.
00:20And today, the Selda Court here in Kolkata has convicted Roy of three crimes, rape, murder
00:27and causing death.
00:28The court is yet to hand down its judgement and a sentencing hearing has been scheduled
00:33for Monday.
00:34Today, the court did tell Roy that the minimum sentence that he will face is life imprisonment
00:40and the maximum is the death penalty.
00:42And the Central Bureau of Investigation here in India has demanded that he be given that
00:47maximum sentence of capital punishment.
00:50From the get-go, this case has been controversial.
00:52There are allegations that it's been mishandled and allegations of evidence tampering and
00:57calls for further investigation.
01:00Both the victim's parents and the defence team allege that more than one person would
01:04have had to have been involved in the crime due to the extent of the injuries to the victim.
01:10And they too have called for further investigation.
