01:02So, can we introduce ourselves briefly for those who do not know you?
01:07So, I am Michel Okeyi, at the civil state, director of the International School of Professional
01:13Training, Michel Yakis, director of the Grand Omoud incubator, and I am a member of several
01:19women's associations of entrepreneurs in Ivory Coast.
01:23So, how does your school and your incubator contribute to the emergence of Ivorian or African fashion?
01:32Yes, this emergence, we try to work to improve African fashion by training.
01:41We receive young girls, young men, we receive a lot of people who want to learn a trade
01:49and our role is to pass on the skills necessary to understand, to value this trade.
01:58So, for us, it goes first through training, which is the basis of any trade.
02:03And training, which is also important for women.
02:07So, why is fashion, let's say, such an important sector for women's independence?
02:14It is a very important sector because, regardless of the social class of the woman,
02:20learning this trade allows her to take care of herself.
02:24Whether it is our mothers who have old sewing machines that are on the market,
02:29the fact of sewing camisoles on the market, it allows them to feed their families, to take care of themselves.
02:34Whether it is women, young women who learn training within Michel Yakis,
02:39after their training, they will create their brand and they will be independent.
02:43They will take care of their parents.
02:45They will also take care of other young girls they will employ.
02:48So, fashion, all of a sudden, allows women to be independent, to take care of themselves,
02:54to have a place in society and even to help other women.
02:58For me, it is a very important vector.
03:00Is it also a way for women to claim their identity and their place in society?
03:07Yes, because if they have an activity that generates income,
03:13they participate in the development of the country, in the economic development of the country.
03:17When a woman works, when a woman takes care of herself,
03:21she takes care of the whole family, she feeds the whole family.
03:26She even takes care of the big family.
03:30It is important that this woman who takes care of herself can participate in the economic development of her country
03:37through this activity that she does.
03:41So, fashion really allows women to be important actors in a country.
03:49And we know that not everyone is lucky enough to be able to train.
03:53There are these women who come from disadvantaged backgrounds.
03:57Does your school support and support initiatives in favour of these women?
04:03We receive a lot of NGOs from various backgrounds.
04:08Women who have been beaten, women who have had genital mutilations.
04:15And we work with these NGOs to make reusable, disposable towels,
04:20to make small bags to allow these women to learn a small trade
04:25and to go back to their families, or to their societies, or to their villages and be able to work.
04:33So, we also have a really social aspect,
04:36since we also allow young women to be sponsored by parents, by nannies.
04:44Because sometimes young people come to us who do not have the means to take care of the school.
04:49Our mission is also to help people,
04:52to get in touch with people who have the means to take care of these young girls.
04:57So, we participate. We have already worked in this direction.
05:03Do we have examples of women who have benefited from your support
05:07and who have managed to get a small place today?
05:11Yes, there are examples.
05:14In each promotion, we have one or two people who have come out of the water
05:20by their creativity, whether in Côte d'Ivoire, Benin or Cameroon,
05:25because these are the examples that have marked me.
05:28Myself, I was invited by a student who was so successful in her job
05:33that she paid me for my plane ticket, my stay in Benin,
05:36to inaugurate her sewing workshop
05:39and show me that she really applied everything she had learned.
05:43She is self-employed today. She takes care of herself.
05:46I see her videos on social media.
05:48I see that she has grown her anonymity.
05:50She even has a sewing workshop.
05:52Well, that's all we want.
05:54It is the pride to see these young girls who have come to Abidjan,
05:57who have made a training, who return to their country,
06:00and who even impact their environment,
06:02and who themselves also have the ambition to open a school.
06:05And I would be delighted to accompany her in this direction.
06:08These are initiatives that encourage.
06:12Very good.
06:13So, what are the biggest difficulties women face in the fashion industry today?
06:19Regardless of the common difficulties for women and men,
06:24which are access to funding, access to high-quality raw materials,
06:29but at a lower cost,
06:31and also access to a quality hand,
06:37women, if they have a partner or a spouse,
06:41they also have to be careful.
06:43You know, this job keeps women at work for hours, sometimes impossible.
06:49This job takes us to travel, to go all over the world.
06:53You have to have a spouse, you have to have a comprehensive partner
06:57who understands the job, who is with you.
06:59Because we have seen a lot of women model stylists
07:04divorce, separate from their partner,
07:06because either the partner did not marry, did not understand the job,
07:11and there is a lot of jealousy and all that.
07:14So, it's not as simple for women.
07:16In addition to that, she has to play her role as a woman in the household.
07:21Like a normal job, but she is forced to receive various clients,
07:25to travel above all, to participate sometimes in exhibitions.
07:29The man must be informed in advance,
07:31sometimes he has to be a manager,
07:33so that he understands that it is in the context of work.
07:36Sometimes there are men who have put vetoes on certain stylists
07:40to prevent them from traveling.
07:42So, in addition to the common problems of cooperation,
07:45women have other problems to deal with.
07:48Have you ever had students who were faced with this kind of case,
07:52or similar situations?
07:54Yes, I talk about it, because it's true that sometimes in situations,
07:58I've seen someone beat his wife because she just stayed late,
08:03or she went shopping, there were traffic jams, she came.
08:07There are men who beat their wives, who don't understand.
08:10There is a man who called me late because we stayed late at school.
08:14And he said, even the seam there, you're going to stay late.

08:21We've had men like that.
08:23Because we have an environment of 90% women,
08:26so I deal with women on a daily basis.
08:29But we also deal with men, companions, because they will call.

09:59So I say to myself, I have been so confronted for 20 years with this kind of situation,

10:12because the relationship between men and women is something that we cannot control.

10:21vis-à-vis the woman, to allow her to take care of herself later.
10:25Can we talk about projects that help these women to embark on fashion in Africa?
10:34Well, there are projects, I don't want to say specifically related to women.
10:39We have funding projects.
10:42For everyone.

10:45And sometimes, it is mentioned in these projects that
10:49the feminist submission will be really asked, or better, it will be favored.
10:54It means that we invite young women to apply.

11:13And more and more, because women, for a long time,
11:18in initiatives, were at the heart of the improvement of the condition of women.
11:22So we encouraged young women to apply for programs,
11:25because they needed help.
11:28And at the end of these programs, they were offered installation kits.
11:31So it existed, and it continues to exist.
11:34But more and more, we encourage the feminist submission in this kind of project.
11:40Earlier, I listened to you, and you said that in your establishment,
11:44there are 90% of women.
11:46It is believed that the professions of fashion interest women more than men,
11:52even though this is not the reality on the ground.
11:54Yes, because there are several factors.
11:56In training, we have a lot of women.

12:27So in training, we have more women.
12:30But in professional success, we have more men.
12:33Because there are many factors that go along with it.

12:44if she manages to be autonomous,
12:46that's what the husband asks,
