00:00An activist has called for religious teachers to be given training on child protection measures

00:07amid reports of a growing number of sexual crimes involving religious figures.

00:12Yayasan Child Kit co-founder Hartini Zainuddin questioned why religious leaders were exempted

00:18from such training, adding that anybody who comes in contact with children should be educated

00:23on child rights and protection.

00:26She also suggested that the Education Ministry's Reproductive and Social Health module be taught

00:32in religious-type schools for the pupils to receive the right information.

00:37Bukit Aman had earlier this month said that sexual crimes involving religious teachers

00:42and celebrity preachers were on the rise.

00:45Meanwhile, Women's Rights Group Sisters in Islam said the structures in religious education

00:50institutions, especially informal ones, must be examined to ensure better checks and balances,

00:57including background checks.

00:59SIS said a survey conducted in 2022 showed that religious figures were highly influential

01:05in shaping a community's thinking, especially youths who placed religious authorities on a pedestal.

01:12To change this narrative, SIS said all offenders, including religious figures, must be held

01:17accountable, saying it is aligned with Islamic principles of justice and equality.
