00:00An academic has called on the government to fund a Royal Commission of Inquiry, or an
00:06independent study, on the state of the nation's education system from
00:10preschool through university.
00:12Sharifa Munira Alatas, chair of the Malaysian Academic Movement, said the
00:16quality of the nation's education has progressively declined despite the
00:20billions spent by the government.
00:22Munira suggested that universities, NGOs, and private sector stakeholders with an
00:27interest in education be given funding to run independent parallel studies which
00:31can provide the current administration analyses of previous blueprints and
00:35roadmaps for the future of the education sector.
00:39She also said there is a gap between the strategic plans and blueprints Malaysia
00:43has devised and their implementation due to political interference and the use of
00:48education as a tool to garner votes.
00:50Meanwhile, Gerak Secretary-General Rosli Mahat suggested that the government
00:55distribute its available budget more fairly across all education sectors rather
00:59than merely focusing on public universities.
01:02Rosli called for research grants to be handed out based on the quality of the
01:05research proposals submitted by academics rather than simply on the basis that the
01:10recipients come from research-based institutions.
