00:00A PAS leader has been criticized for opposing the government's efforts to enhance the

00:06teaching of Mandarin and Tamil in vernacular schools by unfairly accusing their teachers

00:11of lacking proficiency in Bahasa Melayu.

00:14On Saturday, PAS' Women's Wing called for the government to reconsider its plans,

00:19saying national-type school teachers should instead be made to improve their command of

00:23the national language.

00:24The Parent Action Group for Education accused Juanita PAS vice-chief Salamia Noor of intention

00:29only politicizing the matter and told the party to stop meddling in matters beyond their

00:34responsibility.

00:35Instead, PAS' chairman Noor Azima Abdul Rahim said PAS would do better to focus its

00:41efforts on arresting the poor academic performance and high dropout rate among school students

00:45in the states it governs.

00:47Meanwhile, the National Union of the Teaching Professions Secretary General Fauzi Singhan

00:52also criticized Salamia for his suggestion.

00:55Fauzi said merely improving the proficiency of teachers in Bahasa Melayu is unlikely to

00:59have an impact on their students' command of the language.

01:02He said proficiency in any language was dependent on daily interactions, as well as the environment

01:07and culture in which its speakers find themselves.
