00:00Welcome to Mojo Plays and we're getting into the weeds here so turn off random encounters.
00:14These are 20 hidden secrets in Pokemon games.
00:16Now I feel super unqualified to be narrating this list because I'm only a casual Pokemon
00:20fan so if I say Nidorino instead of Nidorino make sure to comment and let me know I'll
00:25definitely read it.
00:26Before we continue, we publish content all week long so be sure to subscribe and ring
00:31the bell to get notified of our latest videos.
00:35Massingno I'm ranking this one low because regardless
00:46of its iconic status, it's fairly well known.
00:49I will however be saving a lesser known Massingno entry for later.
00:53Although not an intentional feature, the Massingno glitch became one of the most famous
00:57secrets in the Pokemon series.
00:59This glitch occurs in the first generation games when players follow a specific sequence
01:03and encounter a wild Pokemon along the Cinnabar Island's coast.
01:07The game attempts to read an empty memory value reserved for Pokemon, resulting in a
01:10strange encounter.
01:11With 190 memory slots allocated for Pokemon, but only 151 species, 39 slots lack complete
01:17data.
01:18Missing these creates a Pokemon with no number, hence the name Missingno, Missingnumber, Missingno.
01:31Dig Damage Here's a fun little entry that does the rounds
01:33on Pokemon subreddits every few years, so make sure to let us know in the comments if
01:36we taught you this.
01:37It didn't work in the first generation of games, so some players aren't aware Earthquake
01:42can hit a Pokemon during the semi-invulnerable turn of Dig, and if it does, it will have
01:47its power doubled for that Pokemon.
01:49Dig does not make you invulnerable, and it's a genuinely helpful skill to have Earthquake
01:53ready to ruin someone's day.
01:56Max Friendship In the Gold and Silver games, players must
02:07increase their friendship stat to evolve certain Pokemon.
02:10It's a neat feature that added another layer of depth to the game.
02:13A prototype of this mechanic appeared in Pokemon Yellow, but it was limited to just
02:17Pikachu.
02:18However, players could manipulate Pikachu's friendship stat by using a potion on a fully
02:22healthy Pikachu.
02:24Since a healthy Pikachu doesn't need a potion, it won't use it, but the potion still increases
02:27the friendship stat.
02:28I don't need to tell you all this, but you can quite easily max out your friendship before
02:32you even know each other's last names.
02:34Walkthrough Walls One of the most fascinating glitches in Pokemon
02:47Red and Blue is the Walkthrough Walls trick.
02:49Well, not the most, but at least in the top 20.
02:52To make this glitch happen, you've got a few options.
02:54My version involves the player tricking the game into thinking they're still in the Safari
02:58Zone, even after leaving.
03:00One method, the ledge trick, begins with the player having a poisoned Pokemon with over
03:04124 HP.
03:06After entering the Safari Zone and paying for the Pokemon Center, the player deposits
03:10all Pokemon except the poisoned one.
03:12When trying to leave, they must select No when asked.
03:15After saving, restarting, and following a series of complex steps, including jumping
03:19off a ledge, the glitch is activated, allowing the player to walk through walls and other
03:23obstacles.
03:24Ghostly.
03:25Far Away Island In Pokemon Emerald, there is a small island
03:29off the coast of the main area that is normally inaccessible through regular gameplay.
03:33To reach it, the game must either be hacked, or the player must have received a special
03:36map from Nintendo.
03:38The second option was only available during special events in Japan and Taiwan in the
03:42mid-2000s.
03:43The island itself is relatively unremarkable, being small with little to explore.
03:48Its main attraction is the incredibly rare Pokemon that can be found there.
03:52Far Away Island is the only place in the series where players can catch a wild new.
03:56Shiny Pokemon Starting with the second generation of Pokemon,
04:00players had the rare opportunity to encounter Pokemon with alternate color patterns, known
04:04as Shiny variants.
04:06The term shiny comes from the distinctive sound effects and animations that play when
04:09a player encounters one.
04:10In the first five generations, the odds of finding a wild shiny Pokemon were 1 in 8,192,
04:21less than one hundredth of one percent.
04:23This probability was increased to 1 in 4,096 in later generations.
04:28These Pokemon are identical to their original counterparts in terms of abilities and stats,
04:32with the only difference being their unique coloration.
04:36If you've encountered a shiny Pokemon accidentally as a casual player, I bet you're losing your
04:39mind right now.
04:41Encounter Rate Changes In Pokemon Diamond and Pearl, players may
04:49notice variations in the frequency of wild Pokemon encounters on certain days.
04:53While not immediately obvious, the game is designed to adjust encounter rates based on
04:57real-world historical dates.
04:59As a subtle detail, the developers programmed the game to reference its internal calendar,
05:03modifying encounter rates on specific holidays in both the US and internationally.
05:07Additionally, the game decreases encounter rates on dates associated with tragic historical
05:11events, such as the bombing of Hiroshima in 9-11, adding a thoughtful layer of reflection
05:16to the gameplay experience.
05:17The layer of reflection being, where the f*** are all the Pokemon?
05:20I go back to work on the 12th.
05:24Mewtwo Though not as enigmatic as the Pokemon it
05:35was created from, Mewtwo has earned a lasting legacy as one of the most famous post-game
05:40secrets in the series.
05:42Like Mew, Mewtwo is mentioned in the journals found in the Pokemon mansions.
05:45From these journals, players learn Mewtwo was a highly powerful and aggressive Pokemon,
05:50potentially responsible for the mansion's destruction.
05:53After becoming the Kanto Pokemon Champion, players can explore a mysterious cave north
05:57of Cerulean City, home to many strong Pokemon.
06:00At the cave's end, players will find Mewtwo, easily the most powerful Pokemon in Red, Blue,
06:04and Yellow.
06:05Shockingly, many players still don't know Mewtwo is in the original series.
06:21The Safari Surf Players can encounter rare wild Pokemon in
06:31the Safari Zone while surfing along the east coastline.
06:34To do this, first enter the Safari Zone, then exit and head through Route 19 to surf on
06:38the east coastline near Seafoam Islands.
06:41While surfing, players will encounter wild Pokemon from the Safari Zone, which are typically
06:45not found in water.
06:46Rare Safari Zone Pokemon such as Chansey, Kangaskhan, and Taurus can also be battled
06:51and caught.
06:52This Safari Surf is similar to the Walk Through Walls trick, as both involve the game mistakenly
06:57thinking the player is still within the Safari Zone.
07:00Level 100 Before the First Gym The XP Underflow Glitch, as it's commonly
07:04known, allows players to level any Pokemon to 100 before even facing the first gym.
07:09This glitch from Blue, Red, and Yellow occurs due to programming flaws, much like Missingno
07:14or Walking Through Walls.
07:16Pokemon in the medium-slow experience group starting at level 1 were mistakenly assigned
07:20a negative experience value exceeding 16 million.
07:24Because of this bug, the game interprets these negative experience points as an enormous
07:27positive value.
07:28As a result, when a level 1 Pokemon with negative experience doesn't accumulate enough points
07:32to reach a positive range, the game assigns it level 100.
07:36Boom.
07:37Easy.
07:38Fight With Red One of the biggest surprises in Pokemon Gold
07:48and Silver is the opportunity to battle the protagonist of the original games, Red.
07:52After collecting all the badges, players can head to Mount Silver and explore a cave beneath
07:56it.
07:57At the end of the cave, they'll encounter Red, who challenges them to a battle.
08:01This fight is one of the toughest in the entire Pokemon series, with Red's team of 6 Pokemon
08:05all level 73 or higher.
08:07The battle is grueling for those unprepared, but defeating the original and most legendary
08:11trainer offers a tremendous sense of accomplishment.
08:14Beating yourself off has never been so hard.
08:16It's such a bad joke.
08:31Fight With Professor Oak
08:37This situation is similar to the Missingno glitch.
08:40Shocking, right?
08:41Professor Oak is mostly a supportive and kind figure throughout the game.
08:44However, by manipulating the game in a specific sequence, players can trigger a battle with
08:49the Professor.
08:50Bet you didn't know you could do that.
08:51In this fight, Professor Oak has a full team of Pokemon.
08:55This suggests that it wasn't just a glitch or error, but rather a feature intentionally
08:59created by the developers.
09:00It remains unclear whether this was scrap part of the game, or something designed purely
09:04for testing purposes.
09:06I like to imagine that it's AI gone mad.
09:12Mew glitch
09:13The Mew glitch is one of the most famous glitches in the original generation, whilst being almost
09:17completely unknown to modern audiences.
09:19It appears in blue, red, and the earlier Japanese versions of the game, including green.
09:24Discovered by players in 2003, 7 years after original release, the glitch allows players
09:29to encounter and catch Mew.
09:31The method for catching Pokemon via this glitch also works on the 3DS Virtual Console.
09:36One early spot to trigger the glitch is on Route 24, where a Junior Trainer appears west
09:40of Nugget Bridge.
09:41Players must catch an Abra, use Teleport to escape the Junior Trainer, defeat the first
09:45swimmer in the Cerulean Gym, and then return to Route 24 to trigger the glitch.
09:50There you go, a little Mew, just for you.
09:53Glitch City
09:54Technically, this is a variation of the Safari Zone Surf glitch, but this was a tough list,
10:02so let me split hairs a little.
10:04To trigger it in red and blue, the player enters the Safari Zone and then exits.
10:08When asked if they want to leave, they must choose no and return to the Safari Zone.
10:12After saving, quitting, and restarting the game, the player exits the Safari Zone again
10:16and walks 500 steps.
10:17However, the game still thinks they're in the Safari Zone, presenting the same scenery,
10:21natural features, and landmarks, although a little, let's say, odd looking.
10:25Players can only escape this glitch city with a Pokemon that can fly or teleport.
10:29The glitch happens because the program fails to recognize that the player has left the
10:33Safari Zone.
10:34This also activates the Walk Through Walls glitch.
10:36Alright, fine, I'm really splitting hairs here.
10:39Exploit the Battle AI
10:49In Pokemon Red and Blue, power points limit your ability to attack enemy Pokemon, while
10:53the enemy Pokemon have unlimited PP but are restricted to using type-effective moves.
10:58This restriction on the enemy's moves can be exploited by the player.
11:02The Battle AI determines the enemy's moves and item usage.
11:05For example, Giovanni, the Viridian City Gym Leader, faces a significant disadvantage because
11:10his ground-type Pokemon are vulnerable to water or grass-type moves.
11:14Similarly, a level 36 Venomoth can defeat a level 62 Dragonite as the Battle AI forces
11:18the Dragonite to use only defensive moves like Barrier.
11:21It's a simple math problem with all the answers online.
11:28Sony Nintendo
11:30In the international versions of Red and Blue, the debug menu contains a reference to Nintendo's
11:35rivalry with Sony.
11:36Sega had been Nintendo's main competitor in the console market until it exited due to
11:41poor business decisions, allowing Sony to enter the industry.
11:43I love Sega, I'm just being factual.
11:46The rivalry between the original PlayStation and the Nintendo 64 seems to have influenced
11:50Game Freak's developers when setting default values for the player and rival characters.
11:55The developers assigned the hidden values Ninten to the player and Sony to the rival.
12:00These names are not normally visible as players must choose their own or use preset names
12:04which don't include the hidden values.
12:06Thanks to hackers, we get to see just how bitchy Nintendo actually is.
12:09Hidden Safari Zone
12:11As we've discussed ad nauseum, the Safari Zone in Red and Blue is a wellspring of fascinating
12:15glitches and bugs.
12:16It's also a prime location for hunting rare Pokemon not found anywhere else in the game.
12:21However, players were disappointed to learn that the Safari Zone was not included in Gold
12:25and Silver, even though it appears in later versions.
12:28It's clear that the Safari Zone was originally planned for Gold and Silver, but the completed
12:31area was never added to the final game.
12:34Despite this, the unfinished code for the Safari Zone remains in the game and players
12:38have been able to access the hidden area using a GameShark.
12:42Go.
12:43Stay brave, be strong.
12:45Old Man Glitch
12:46A grumpy old man in Viridian City is linked to a glitch in Red and Blue.
12:54Another Red and Blue entry.
12:55This game was a mess.
12:56A beautiful mess.
12:58Now remember when I said at the start of this video that I'd have a lesser known Masino
13:01glitch?
13:02Well, this grumpy old man can be used to summon the infamous glitch Pokemon.
13:05This old man glitch occurs when the player uses the fly move to reach Cinnabar Islands
13:09right after the old man teaches the player how to catch a Pokemon.
13:12While surfing on the eastern coastline of the island, wild Pokemon encountered are tied
13:16to the player's name, specifically the index numbers of the characters in it.
13:20This means that by selecting a specific name with specific letters, players can encounter
13:24Masino.
13:25It's borderline genius.
13:26That's why I'm going to name my first born child 10 million dollars and heaps of cake.
13:37Clone a Pokemon
13:38To perform the Clone Glitch, you'll need 2 Gameboys, 2 copies of Gold and Silver, 2 First
13:43Born Sons, and a Linking Cable.
13:45Actually, don't worry about the Sons.
13:47Begin by selecting the Pokemon you want to clone on one Gameboy and the Pokemon to be
13:50sacrificed on the other.
13:52After linking the Gameboys, head to a Pokemon Center and enter the Cable Club.
13:56From there, go to the Trade Center and trade the Pokemon you want to clone on one Gameboy
13:59and a sacrificial Pokemon on the next.
14:01Next, reset the Gameboy containing the Pokemon to be cloned, making sure not to save.
14:06If done correctly, the cloned Pokemon will appear on the other Gameboy Boom Eugenics.
14:12I think.
14:13I'm quite dumb.
14:14Rarest Pokemon
14:16In Red and Blue, rare Pokemon like Genghis Khan and Chansey can only be found in the
14:20Safari Zone.
14:21However, Rapidash and Fearow that can use Payday, Meowth's Move, are considered the
14:25rarest Pokemon in these games.
14:27Gold and Silver introduced another rare Pokemon, Dunsparce.
14:30Red and Blue also introduced Trade Evolutions, which allowed players to encounter unique
14:33forms of Pokemon that can only be obtained through training.
14:36For example, Alakazam, the final evolution of Abra, evolves from a Kadabra when traded,
14:41and Machamp, the final form of Machop, evolves into Machoke through trading.
14:45In Gold and Silver, players can obtain Politoad, one of the final forms of Poliwag, by trading
14:50a Poliwhirl holding a King's Rock.
14:52If you didn't know any of these, legally you have to like the video.
14:55Consider yourself learnt up.
