I was up at Scrabo tower today. Scrabo tower is between Comber and Newtownards. It was built in 1857 and if one of Northern Irelands best known landmarks. Scrabo Tower is 135 feet high. It is a 19th Century lookout Tower or Folly. That Stands on Scrabo Hill near Newtownards Co Down Northern Ireland. The Tower commemorates the 3 Marquess of Londonderry who was born Charles William Stewart in 1788. He fought in the Napoleonic Wars. He was Married twice first to Catherine Bligh and then to Frances Anne Vane. The Tower was Shut in 2014 due to water damage to the electrics and the lighting. Toilets are about 5 minutes away for people It's a steep uphill walk though so not for anyone that's a bit incapacitated. On a clear day you can see Scotland and Dublin in The Republic of Ireland and if you look down you can see Newtownards Airfield where people learn to fly from professional instructors. In 1944 -1945 Lieutenant Colonel Robert Paddy Blair Mayne who came from Newtownards and was of Ulster Scots decent used to sail his boat in Strangford lough and regularly used to fish there with some of his squad from the SAS. Or Special Air Service. If you intend visiting Northern Ireland it is only a 30 minute drive from the centre of Belfast.
