US to withdraw from climate deal on Jan. 27, 2026 -- UN

The United States will withdraw from the Paris climate agreement on Jan. 27, 2026, the United Nations said on Jan. 28, 2025 after Washington formally notified Secretary-General Antonio Guterres of President Donald Trump's decision to quit.

00:00And I can confirm to you that the United States has notified the Secretary-General in his
00:05capacity as depository of its withdrawal on January 27th of this year from the Paris Agreement,
00:13which as you recall was signed on December 12th, 2015 – or was agreed to on December
00:1912th, 2015.
00:20The United States had signed the Paris Agreement on 22nd April 2016 and expressed its consent
00:28to be bound by the agreement by acceptance on 3rd September 2016.
00:35It then withdrew from the agreement effective on November 4th, 2020 before accepting it
00:39again on February 19th, 2021.
00:46According to Article 28, paragraph 2 of the Paris Agreement, the withdrawal of the United
00:50States will take effect on January 27th, 2026.
00:56We reaffirm our commitment to the Paris Agreement and support all effective efforts to limit
01:01the rise in global temperatures to 1.5 degrees Celsius.
