00:46President Ferdinand Marcos Jr. seemingly distances himself from the impeachment of Vice President
00:50Sara Duterte Asked if he played a role in the House's decision,
00:54the president says Thursday, February 6, you're giving me too much credit
00:58If there's this constant implication that I am somehow giving instructions and making
01:03utos to do this and do that and do that, that's not the case at all. That's not how it works.
01:08Not at all. Not at all.
01:11Despite reporters' repeated questions about his involvement or influence over members
01:15of the lower chamber, he asserts he had no hand in the development
01:18Didn't you ask them not to sign the document that was transmitted to the Senate for us?
01:24I don't care about that. The congressman will decide what he will do because it is the responsibility
01:31of the House of Representatives.
01:34Marcos also shares his son, Ilocos Norte 1st District Representative Sandro Marcos, consulted
01:39him prior to signing the impeachment complaint. He says he advised the younger Marcos to do
01:44your duty, but did not know Sandro was the first to sign the document.
01:48Meantime, Senate President Cheese Escudero clarifies the Senate will not hold the impeachment
01:52trial during the session break or until June 2. He argues the Senate court can only be
01:57convened in a plenary session.
01:59We will not hasten it, but we will not delay it. We will not pressure anyone to speed it up or delay it.
02:11He adds special sessions are only held for urgent legislative matters such as acting on pending bills.
02:19House lawmakers with senatorial aspirations in the 2025 elections did not sign the impeachment
02:24complaint against Vice President Sara Duterte, except those from Makabayan Bloc. Among the most
02:29notable are Deputy Majority Leader Erwin Tulfo and Deputy Speaker Camille Villar, who are part
02:34of the administration slate. Tulfo says as a leading senatorial candidate, he must remain
02:39impartial should a trial move to the Senate. However, other Tulfos in the House, namely
02:44Quezon City Rep. Ralph Tulfo and Axis Rep. Jocelyn Tulfo, both signed as complainants.
02:50They are the son and wife of Sen. Rafi Tulfo.
02:53Meantime, over half or 41 out of 60 of the Mindanao lawmakers backed the complaint,
02:58including strong support from the Bangsamoro Autonomous Region in Muslim Mindanao or BARM,
03:03where seven of eight lawmakers signed. In contrast, Davao Dulce Rep. John Tracy
03:08Cagas is the only Davao District Representative to support the complaint, while others did not
03:13sign. Davao First District Rep. Paulo Duterte, on the other hand, condemns the impeachment of
03:18his sister, calling it politically motivated and warning that the Marcos Jr. administration
03:23is treading on dangerous ground. The Philippine Statistics Authority says the unemployment and
03:30underemployment in the Philippines in December 2024 reached the lowest level since 2005.
03:36The unemployment rate dropped to 3.1 percent in December, representing 1.63 million Filipinos,
03:42while underemployment declined to 10.9 percent from 11.9 percent in November. The latest data
03:48puts the country's average unemployment rate at a 19-year low of 3.8 percent, with the underemployment
03:53at 11.9 percent. National Statistician Dennis Mapa says the following industries contributed
03:59the most jobs in 2024. Mapa attributes the growth in transportation jobs to land transport,
04:05as companies increased their fleets with more buses and shuttles.
04:08Meantime, the agriculture and fisheries sector experienced the largest job loss with 1.56 million.
04:16President Donald Trump's top aides staunchly defend his push to transfer Palestinians out of
04:21Gaza and have the U.S. take over the enclave, but they back away from elements of his proposal.
04:26At a White House briefing Wednesday, February 5, Press Secretary Caroline Leavitt hails Trump's
04:31Gaza proposal as historic, quote, "...outside of the box thinking." But she notes the president
04:36had not committed to putting boots on the ground in the territory. She also declines to rule out
04:41the use of U.S. troops there. At the same time, Leavitt walks back Trump's earlier assertion that
04:46Gazans need to be permanently resettled in neighboring countries. She instead says they
04:51should be temporarily relocated for the rebuilding process. U.S. Secretary of State Marco Rubio also
04:57says the idea was for Gazans to leave the territory for an interim period of reconstruction
05:02and debris clearing. Trump earlier announced he envisioned transforming Gaza into the
05:06Riviera of the Middle East and have Gazans leave Palestine.
05:12K-pop star Sandara Park pays tribute to Barbie Shue, remembering the late Taiwanese actress
05:16as one of her early inspirations. During a New Year countdown party in Kaohsiung City,
05:22Park sings Ni Au De Ai, one of the original soundtracks of hit drama series Meteor Garden,
05:26starring Shue. Park says on X in a reply to a post,
05:30"...Rest in peace Barbie Shue. I got influenced by you since when I started my career. We will
05:35always remember you." Shue gained popularity in the Philippines with Meteor Garden, which aired
05:40in 2003, around the same time Park was beginning her career in the country when she joined the Star
05:45Circle Quest in 2004. Park had covered Ni Au De Ai on her YouTube channel, earning over 2 million
05:52views. Sandara Park remains a part of 2NE1, with the group headlining the Head in the Clouds
05:56festival in Los Angeles this May. And that's today's wrap. I'm Kara Oliver. Thank you for
