00:00Police continue to probe into Sweden's worst mass shooting amid mystery about the 35-year-old
00:08suspect.
00:10Belgium is shaken by the third metro shooting in 24 hours.
00:13One person is injured and two suspects are on the run.
00:16Public prosecutor believes that drug cartels are involved.
00:20Donald Trump, a real estate mogul turned commander-in-chief, has plans to kick Gazans out of their land
00:25to build a Middle East Riviera.
00:27But what do the neighbours and EU say?
00:33Swedish police say they were still investigating the motive behind the country's deadliest
00:39mass shooting that claimed 11 lives on Tuesday.
00:42According to local media, the shooting at an education centre in Örebro was carried
00:47out by a 35-year-old man who had been unemployed for a decade.
00:52Footage showed students hiding in a classroom as the mass shooting unfolded.
00:56Police said the suspect who died at the scene was not known to them prior to the event.
01:26Meanwhile, Sweden's King Carl XVI Gustaf and his wife attended a church service on
01:37Wednesday in Örebro in commemoration of the victims.
01:41People lit candles at the site of the incident, which left at least 11 people dead, including
01:46the gunman and at least five other persons seriously wounded.
01:51The school where the attack took place teaches adults dropouts seeking higher grades to access
01:57higher education or to complete their formal studies.
02:05Another shooting has shaken Brussels, with gunfire reported near Clemenceau station in
02:09Anderlecht early Thursday morning, injuring one person.
02:13This comes just 24 hours after a similar incident at the same station, where armed youths fired
02:19at passers-by.
02:21Three incidents in total with the shooting in Saint-Georges station.
02:26Brussels' new public prosecutor, Julien Moisil, has vowed a zero-tolerance approach to drug
02:31trafficking and increased police crackdowns.
02:36Talking to the Belgian public broadcaster, Moisil said they have two suspects who are
02:39believed to be on the run at the moment, but also admitted that they don't know who they
02:44are actually dealing with.
02:46However, when asked by the journalist if these events are linked to drug trafficking, he
02:51replied with certainty, pointing out the location of the shootings.
02:56Moisil believes these are reprisals to conquer certain territories.
03:09Donald Trump's statements on the Gaza Strip have not fallen on deaf ears.
03:13The Israeli defense minister has already given orders to the army to prepare for the
03:17so-called voluntary departure of the Gazans.
03:22American control of the Palestinian enclave, expulsion of the Gazans into neighboring countries
03:27and transformation of the Palestinian enclave into a Middle East Riviera.
03:32This is the plan of the U.S. president.
03:36Even though the White House has since nuanced Trump's statement, concerns remain.
03:42What Trump is proposing is clearly catastrophic for Gaza, but it would also be destabilizing
03:49for regional countries.
03:52It would be destabilizing for the broader region itself, and it would also have negative
03:59impacts on Europe itself.
04:01So let's for a second imagine one million Gazans being moved to Egypt, to a country
04:09with limited economic opportunities, a country of which they themselves, Gazans themselves
04:17have little connection with besides being neighbors.
04:21Do people really think that one million Gazan refugees will stay in Egypt?
04:26No.
04:27Thousands of them, tens of thousands, will seek better economic prospects for the field,
04:34including in Europe.
04:35The U.S. president has repeatedly suggested that 1.8 million people from Gaza could be
04:40displaced to the neighboring countries.
04:43This proposal echoes the forced displacement that followed the creation of the state of
04:47Israel in 1948 and 1967, an option repeatedly rejected by Egypt and Jordan.
04:56This would be hugely controversial among the Arab people, who would see this as aiding
05:04and abetting the effective ethnic cleansing of Palestinians from their land.
05:11And in the case of Egypt, for instance, would be hugely controversial within the military
05:17and security establishment, who have long seen this question of Gaza and the displacement
05:23of Gazans as something of a red line.
05:26The European Union has merely reiterated its support for the two-state solution and stated
05:31that Gaza is an integral part of a future Palestinian state.
05:40Three weeks into the ceasefire between Israel and Hamas, over half a million Palestinians
05:45were finally able to return to their homes in northern Gaza.
05:49Twenty-two-year-old Mohamed, like many others, made the long journey north on foot with his
05:54family after 15 months of displacement.
05:58Despite limited access to internet and electricity, Euridu spoke to Mohamed about how his life
06:03has changed since he returned home just one week ago.
06:28But once they arrived, the home that took Mohamed's family almost his whole life to
06:44obtain was in ruins.
07:11Mohamed explains that his family was displaced four times since the start of the war, living
07:16in makeshift tents with little protection from the cold and rain.
07:20They returned home to have a roof over their heads, but now they fear it may collapse on
07:24them at any moment.
07:27Accessing food, water and health care has become even more difficult since his return,
07:31despite the increase in humanitarian aid coming into Gaza.
08:02Although humanitarian organizations have increased their presence in the north, the complete
08:08absence of infrastructure means some areas remain impossible to reach.
08:13This has meant that thousands of people like Mohamed and his family still have little access
08:17to essential items.
08:19Despite the dire conditions, Mohamed, like many other Palestinians, said he has no intention
08:24of leaving his home.
08:25Thousands of demonstrators gathered in cities across the U.S. to protest the Trump administration's
08:36early actions, decrying everything from the president's immigration crackdown to his rollback
08:42of transgender rights and a proposal to forcibly transfer Palestinians from the Gaza Strip.
08:48Hundreds of protesters in Austin marched through blocks around the state capital, chanting
08:53and waving placards.
08:55At the end of the day, we're a country of immigrants.
08:59My family has been here for a while, but I come from immigrants, like a few generations
09:04ago.
09:05And everyone here are immigrants, and immigrants have built this country to what it is, and
09:10we can't turn our backs on the people that built this country and that are still contributing
09:15to this country.
09:17The protests were a result of a movement that is organized online under the hashtags
09:22Build the Resistance and 50-51, which stands for 50 protests, 50 states, one day.
09:29Websites and accounts across social media issued calls for actions with messages such
09:34as Reject Fascism and Defend Our Democracy.
09:37I lost my father, many of my friends in Syria, we will go back.
09:48Many European countries have suspended the Syrian asylum procedures after the fall of
09:53Bashar al-Assad's regime in Syria, including Germany, Austria and Sweden, the main
09:59host countries for Syrian refugees in the European Union.
10:03Austria has been re-evaluating the status of Syrian refugees who arrived less than five
10:10years ago and has also announced a deportation program.
10:13The rights of Syrian refugees and asylum seekers are at risk today in a Europe where
10:20the far right continues to grow, prospecting increasingly stringent rules against immigration.
10:26And the European Union can intervene on how the member states manage war refugees, we
10:32see it on European Stories.
10:37An offensive by Jihadists has overturned Bashar al-Assad's regime in Syria on December 8,
10:422024.
10:43The Islamist group, ex-Kaida Ayatollah Hiral Sham, has put an end to 13 years of civil war
10:49and 24 years of dictatorship.
10:51The HTS is considered a terrorist group by the UN and the European Union.
10:56The Syrian civil war has caused one of the most serious migratory crises in the world.
11:01More than half of a population of 23 million people has been forced to flee.
11:07More than 7 million remain stranded in Syria.
11:10Almost 5 million are refugees in the bordering countries, mainly Turkey.
11:15In Europe, there are more than one million Syrian refugees and asylum seekers.
11:19Most live in Germany, Austria and Sweden.
11:23For 12 years, Syria has been the first country of origin of asylum seekers in the Union.
11:28In 2023, asylum requests increased by 17%.
11:32Today, the restrictions on asylum procedures put more than 100,000 requests at risk.
