Canada 'won't be for sale ever' Carney tells Trump in first White House meeting

A meeting between the leaders of Canada and the United States is not usually considered a high-stakes showdown, but there was little ordinary about this encounter after Trump spent months musing about annexing Canada and turning it into the 51st state.

00:00Canada's Prime Minister Mark Carney made his first visit to the White House since winning last week's election to meet with U.S. President Donald Trump.
00:10The meeting came against the backdrop of disagreements and high tensions between the North American neighbors.
00:16Trump had spent months musing about turning Canada into the 51st U.S. state,
00:21and it wasn't long until a reporter in the Oval Office asked him if he was still interested in doing so.
00:27When you get rid of that artificially drawn line, somebody drew that line many years ago with like a ruler,
00:32just a straight line right across the top of the country.
00:35When you look at that beautiful formation when it's together, I'm a very artistic person.
00:41But when I looked at that beauty, I said that's the way it was meant to be.
00:44But, you know, I do feel it's much better for Canada.
00:50But we're not going to be discussing that unless somebody wants to discuss it.
00:54Thank you very much.
00:55Carney responded resolutely to Trump's remarks.
00:58Well, if I may, as you know from real estate, there are some places that are never for sale.
01:06That's true.
01:07We're sitting in one right now, you know, Buckingham Palace that you visited as well.
01:10That's true.
01:11And having met with the owners of Canada over the course of the campaign last several months,
01:17it's not for sale, won't be for sale ever.
01:20The two leaders discussed what Carney said was a wide range of topics, chief among them trade, amid Trump's global tariff policies.
01:29Trump says he's still keen on implementing his plan, currently on hold for 90 days, adding that other nations need the U.S. far more than Washington needs them.
01:38We could sign 25 deals right now, Howard, if we wanted.
01:43We don't have to sign deals.
01:44They have to sign deals with us.
01:45They want a piece of our market.
01:47We don't want a piece of their market.
01:49We don't care about their market.
01:50They want a piece of our market.
01:52Carney described the meeting as constructive, adding that Canada is keen on working with Washington within reason, but not at the expense of its interests.
02:00Trump said the meeting with the Canadian leader went well, noting that he believes the two nations' ongoing relationship will be strong.
