00:00Right here on Radio Row in New Orleans, Kevin Walsh. Superstar offensive lineman Tristan Wirth of the Tampa Bay Buccaneers is here.
00:09And I think it is appropriate to just label you a superstar because left tackle, right tackle, any way they slice it, it's an all-pro non-Tristan.
00:18Yeah, it was fun. I mean, it was crazy. I knew there was a bunch of guys that had great seasons.
00:25And I knew it was the first time anybody had ever done it on the right and left side, so I had my fingers crossed.
00:32Even playing both sides, I know that that's not simple. Like the game on Sunday, there's a lot of conversation about Tooney going from guard to tackle, right?
00:41Yeah, that's crazy. That's what they've asked him to do. That's crazy.
00:45Tell me more why, though. Explain to people.
00:48I mean, obviously, Tooney plays left guard, and I can't remember how many games it was.
00:52Down the stretch, they're like, yeah, we need you to... This is how I pictured it in my head.
00:56They came up to Joe Tooney like, hey, we need you to kick out to play tackle.
01:01And it was Myles Garrett that week.
01:04Like, that's not...
01:06I didn't realize that.
01:07That's not an easy... That's a hard thing to do for most tackles.
01:12I mean, not most tackles. That's a hard thing to do for any tackle.
01:16Following week, I'm sorry, it was Daniil Hunter, Myles Garrett, and then Daniil Hunter again.
01:21And they asked Joe Tooney to go do that.
01:23Didn't blink an eye, and he went and did it.
01:25Like, that's insanely impressive.
01:27Yeah, no, I mean, it's a fair point for you between the left side or the right side.
01:32I mean, what are the differences?
01:35Is there still a spot where you're a little bit more comfortable from one to the other?
01:39I think I'll always be comfortable on the right side.
01:42I've had so many reps over there.
01:44I did it all through college.
01:46But when it comes down to it, it's all the same things.
01:48You know, you're doing the same movements, but just flipped.
01:51I tell people, it's like wiping your ass with your other hand.
01:54Or some people do a lot, you know, use your mouse in your left hand.
01:58Like, go a whole day with your mouse in your left hand.
02:00And that's... It's just so awkward. It doesn't feel normal.
02:02Like, you're just doing stuff backwards.
02:04But I kept telling myself, I was like, the more reps I get, the more comfortable I'll feel.
02:07You know, it'll be all right. I'll get comfortable. It'll be okay.
02:10Yeah. And, I mean, obviously you were.
02:12You had yourself another phenomenal season, I think, for you guys in Tampa Bay.
02:16You guys had another great year.
02:18I think it's such a fascinating thing to watch.
02:20So, the extra necessary detail is, my fiance is a diehard boxer.
02:25I watch as much box football as anything that there is, right?
02:28And I kind of see the balance of the respect that you guys get, right?
02:33What you're able to accomplish.
02:35You guys smashed Philly.
02:37I'll tell you, I'm an Eagle fan.
02:39You smashed Philly, okay?
02:41The other two games, they lost by a combined, I think, four points.
02:43Yeah.
02:44You guys beat the Detroit Lions in Detroit.
02:46Yeah.
02:47In Kansas City, you didn't get the football in overtime.
02:48Yeah.
02:49Right?
02:50So, you guys, it is very obvious, with the very best teams, you can beat them.
02:541,000%, right?
02:56Right there.
02:57You guys win a division.
02:58Again, what's the one thing?
03:00Is it just, sometimes it's just, I don't know, one bounce?
03:03Right there, I think you're 100% correct.
03:06Yeah.
03:07I like the one bounce thing, because it is.
03:08I mean, you never know how stuff's going to go.
03:10You know, Coach Tom Moore, he's in our building.
03:12He's just turned, oh, my gosh, I can't remember.
03:14I don't know how old.
03:1586, I think he just turned.
03:17It's insane.
03:18He's the best.
03:19Yeah, yeah, yeah.
03:20He's always told me.
03:21I remember he came and talked to us at Iowa when I was in college,
03:23and he said there's five plays that determine the outcome of a football game,
03:25and you don't know which five they're going to be.
03:27And it's crazy, but when you sit and think about that, you're like, damn.
03:30I think you're right.
03:32I mean, I'm just thinking now, the NFC title game,
03:36the Eagles went for a fourth and five, I think, at the time.
03:39It was 13-12.
03:40Yeah.
03:41Touchdown, extra point.
03:42Okay, now it's eight, right?
03:44That's the swing of the game.
03:45And I love, like, you don't know when those five plays are going to come,
03:47but it's five things are going to happen that are going to determine the
03:50outcome of the game.
03:52And you kind of list off a couple, like, you know, overtime with the Chiefs.
03:55We're right there.
03:57Field goal against Atlanta in Atlanta, the overtime.
04:01Well, you guys were able to at least get that bounce.
04:04The OT win against Carolina.
04:06Yeah.
04:07Again, because I'm telling you, we watch every game.
04:09She's like, I can't do overtime again, please.
04:11You know what I mean?
04:12I can imagine how stressful it is.
04:13We're playing.
04:14We're playing.
04:15Overtime sucks, dude.
04:17I can't imagine, man.
04:19But so tell me now, you and Baker, right, you guys have a great relationship
04:23there.
04:24What it's like blocking for him, playing with him as your quarterback,
04:27because you come into this league, it's Tom Brady, it's a Super Bowl, right?
04:30I mean, it's the high of the highs, right?
04:32You and Baker, again, you've had success.
04:34What's that relationship like?
04:35I mean, me and Baker are super close.
04:38And it's been fun these past two years, like, building this relationship.
04:41And coming from Tom, too, it's like, I think, like, play-wise, like, Tom,
04:47everyone knew where Tom was going to be.
04:48He's standing back there.
04:49He's going to swing it.
04:50They knew how deep he was going to be, everything.
04:52With Bake, like, Bake's running around, making plays, doing his thing.
04:56So it's like, you know, big changes you've got to understand, like, okay,
04:59your internal clock has to be a little bit longer.
05:01They always tell you not to have an internal clock, like,
05:03don't assume the ball's out.
05:05But it just happens.
05:06The longer you play with somebody, you've got to build it.
05:08With Bake, it's like, you've got to go, you've got to protect,
05:12you've got to block your ass off.
05:14He's trying to make something happen, which is awesome.
05:17But just having Bake is incredible.
05:20I think the group we had this year was the best group I've ever been a part of.
05:23Like, it's fun stuff.
05:25Yeah, and, I mean, look, again, some of the health.
05:27Mike missed some time.
05:28Godwin went down.
05:30Antoine missed a lot of time on the defensive side of the football right.
05:32So I know that those things all go into it.
05:34But also teams always look to improve year over year.
05:37I don't want to put you in a tough spot, but Gerald McCoy, right,
05:40box legend, everybody knows him.
05:42He, this week I saw, immediately made a plea.
05:46Hey, Jason, go get Myles Garrett, right?
05:49Yeah, I've been seeing that all over.
05:51I don't know, what do you think about that, hearing that?
05:53That's not crazy at all.
05:55Myles Garrett, Tampa's a great place.
05:56Hey, all right, there we go.
05:58You'd love Tampa.
06:00But, I mean, it's crazy because the longer you're here, you know,
06:03and you understand more of the business side and how things work,
06:06and it's, you know, we want to keep our guys,
06:10and I think that's always priority number one.
06:13But, yeah, that'd be pretty insane.
06:17Yeah, I mean, Tampa's a great place.
06:19I've heard great things.
06:21I'll get you out of here on this.
06:23And, again, I really appreciate it.
06:25Yeah, absolutely.
06:26The Eagles, they're in the Super Bowl this year,
06:28and one thing that I've appreciated about the season is,
06:30while Saquon Barkley is a megastar and gets a lot of headlines,
06:33that offensive line, the credit is not far behind, right?
06:36Yeah.
06:37From just what you've been able to see of those guys, that group, you know,
06:40from Lane over to Maialata and everything in between,
06:44what makes that group roll so well?
06:46It's insane.
06:49They have an unreal group.
06:50I mean, Beckton, Juergens, and Dickerson, like, in the middle.
06:53Everyone knows Lane and Jordan on the outside.
06:56Like, they're so big, and it's just awesome to watch their tape,
07:00especially paired with Saquon, too.
07:02Like, they're just running all over the place, and it's really cool to see,
07:05and it's cool to see all of it.
07:07I got to hang out with Lane and Landon at the Pro Bowl last year,
07:11so it's cool, like, you know, to build relationships with guys
07:14and then go see them have awesome success.
07:16So, yeah, it's really cool.
07:18I mean, they're balling.
07:19They're playing lights out right now.
07:21We'll see if they can finish it off.
07:23Again, Tristan Wirfs, all pro, left side, right side.
07:25Anyway, you slice it.
07:26Really appreciate it, man.
07:27Awesome stuff.
07:28All right, on Sports Grid.
