00:00Islam permits Muslims to visit the graves of non-Muslims and attend their funerals as
00:06a mark of respect, says former religious minister Zulkifli al-Bakri.
00:11Zulkifli, however, said that Muslims are advised to refrain from engaging in any religious

00:19He quoted prominent scholars, including Imam al-Nawawi and Imam al-Shafi'i, who said
00:24it is permissible for Muslims to attend the funeral processions of non-Muslim relatives.
00:29In a post on X, he said Muslims are also allowed to wash, shroud and bury the bodies of non-Muslims
00:36if necessary.
00:37He added that attending the funeral of a non-Muslim and participating in religious rituals of
00:42other faiths are two separate issues.
00:45Last week, Religious Affairs Minister Naeem Mokhtar said the Islamic Development Department
00:50was working on new guidelines for Muslims attending events at non-Muslim places of worship.
00:56Under the proposed guidelines, organizers would need to obtain the permission of the
01:00relevant authorities as well as the views of Islamic authorities if their event were
01:05to involve Muslims.
