Why does Mona Lisa have no eyebrows? Ask AI
An AI-powered museum app is allowing visitors to 'talk to masterpieces' most notably the famous Mona Lisa. AskMona is one of many AI solutions exhibiting at a global summit in Paris' Grand Palais, which gathers government and business leaders, start-ups and scientists to discuss the economic and social challenges of AI as well as opportunities in various sectors. AskMona aims to make museum visits conversational, and visitors can ask questions to the app, and get an instantaneous response, such as to why Mona Lisa has no eyebrows.

00:00Why don't you have any eyebrows?
00:25Ah, the enigma of my absent eyebrows.
00:27In the gentle whispers of time, it is said that my visage was once adorned with both eyebrows and eyelashes.
00:33Yet, as the fashion of the 16th century evolved, the practice of facial hair removal became a mark of high society inspired by the customs of earlier times.
00:42Thus, an unknown hand may have erased these features, leaving my face as smooth as the serene waters of a placid lake.
00:54Well, Ask Mona is an artificial intelligence solution for museums, and the idea behind it is to make every visit to the museum more conversational, so you can talk directly to the work of art.
01:24Well, the idea came from this book that everybody read called Harry Potter.
01:43In Harry Potter, there is this idea where you can talk to the work of art and enter into some kind of magical world, you know?
01:50Well, we had this dream in 2016 to make this possible through AI.
01:57And so we worked relentlessly during those years to make it possible, and now it's actually possible.
02:03On the canvas, I see sun and rain.
02:07Your observation is quite relevant.
02:10It is a beautiful example of how Fortin uses natural elements to create an atmosphere and convey emotions.
02:18We were just bragging about you.
02:21Great driving during the storm.
02:26So at Ask Mona, we created what we call smart magnets.
02:30So those magnets are sold in museum shops, and at the back of it, there is a QR code.
02:35When you are scanning the QR code, you can have a conversation.
02:38Here with Victor Hugo, here with Leonardo da Vinci, here with Napoleon or even Ramses.
02:44You can have a conversation with those great historical figures through AI.
03:00I think AI is changing the way we are consuming every form of content.
03:07And this is revolutionizing the way we are interacting also with the work of art or any form of content basically.
03:16And so I think it's the way it's going.
03:21It's not a trend like the Metaverse was a trend.
03:23I think it's profound and it's here to stay.
03:38I'm not sure AI will replace workers, you know.
03:42When we are working, for instance, in the museums, we are working in collaborations with guides
03:47that give us some specific insight for us to create those forms of projects.
03:52So their work is changing, is shifting, but every work is shifting through time.
03:58But I'm not sure it's going to replace some workers.
04:01But I'm not sure it's going to replace some workers.
04:31I'm not sure it's going to replace some workers.
