00:00In the midst of the hustle and bustle of the Deirre Creek area in Arras lies an oasis of
00:11serenity. It's the Dubai Public Library. Built under the behest of Sheikh Rashid bin
00:16Saeed Al Maktoum in 1963, it has provided the area's residents with an important
00:21service for the past 50 years. The library started out as one hall. Today, its buildings
00:28span 1,150 square meters. A contented silence hangs over the reading area, which houses
00:42over 104,000 books in every topic. Nearby, other library users are making the most of
00:58the building's internet and computer services. The library was one of the first in the region
01:03to implement a fully electronic system in the late 1990s. In another hall, users can
01:09take advantage of 165 periodicals, including magazines from the region and across the world.
01:25Behind a sliding door, employees are working their way through over 37,000 books that come
01:31through the library's doors every year to be distributed to other branches across Dubai.
01:41Each book must receive an ID and be entered into the library's electronic system before
01:46it can be sent off to bring knowledge and enjoyment to a reader.
