00:00Good day and welcome to the Gulf News Update for Monday, January the 2nd.
00:06Here are the top stories at this hour.
00:09In a majority verdict, India's Supreme Court has held that any appeal for votes on the
00:13ground of religion, race, caste, community or language amounted to corrupt practice under
00:19the election law provision.
00:22Referring to the term His Religion used in the representation of the People's Act which
00:27deals with corrupt practice, Chief Justice TS Thakur and three others in the 4-3 verdict
00:33said it meant the religion and caste of all, including voters, candidates and their agents.
00:40India's Supreme Court has ordered the dismissal of the President of the country's powerful
00:44Cricket Board over the failure to enact recommended reforms.
00:48In a shock ruling, a panel of judges said that the Board of Control for Cricket in India
00:53President Anurag Thakur and the organization's No. 2 Ajay Shirke had to stand down immediately.
01:00The order comes after judges also slapped restrictions on the BCCI's accounts last
01:05year over its failure to implement a series of reforms recommended by a panel headed by
01:10a former top judge, Rajendramal Lodha.
01:14Dick Clark Productions is hitting back against Mariah Carey's claim that it sabotaged her
01:20live performance on its New Year's Rocking Eve special.
01:25Carey's disaster during the annual New Year's Eve special made international headlines.
01:30The superstar vocally stumbled through her short set in Times Square, failing to sing
01:35for most of it despite a pre-recorded track of her songs playing in the background.
01:41Carey was visibly upset during the performance.
01:44Carey's representative Nicole Perna blames technical difficulties.
01:49In an interview with Billboard, she said Dick Clark Productions hampered Carey's performance
01:54and set her up to fail.
