00:00Good day, welcome to the gulf news update for Tuesday, February the 14th.
00:06Here are the top stories at this hour.
00:10India's Supreme Court handed down a four-year prison sentence this morning to the incoming
00:15Chief Minister of Tamil Nadu for corruption, which prevents her from taking up the post.
00:20V.K.
00:21Shashikala was found guilty of possessing disproportionate assets in a long-running
00:25case that also involved her mentor J Jailalitha, the state's former chief minister who died
00:31in December.
00:32Shashikala was not present at the hearing in New Delhi, but the court ordered that she
00:36immediately surrender to police to begin serving her sentence.
00:41The panel also sentenced her nephew and niece to four years in prison after a lower court
00:45had earlier acquitted them of any wrongdoing.
00:50Donald Trump's national security adviser Michael Flynn resigned amid controversy over
00:55his contacts with the Russian government.
00:58It marks a first stunning departure from Trump's inner circle less than a month after his inauguration.
01:06The White House said Trump had accepted Flynn's resignation amid allegations the retired three-star
01:11general discussed US sanctions strategy with Russia's Ambassador Sergey Kislyak before
01:16taking office.
01:19Pep Guardiola is refusing to talk up his team's title credentials despite three successive
01:24league wins, taking Manchester City to within eight points of leaders Chelsea.
01:30A 2-0 win at Bournemouth on Monday saw City leapfrog three sides and climb into second
01:36place after a goal in each half was enough to see off the challenge of Bournemouth.
01:42West's side's story, arriving at Dubai Opera on Valentine's Day today and running until
01:47February 18, is turning 60 this year.
01:50The Romeo and Juliet-inspired musical, introduced to Broadway in 1957, has always questioned
01:56whether love can survive a deadly teenage rivalry between a white American gang and
02:02their Puerto Rico rivals.
02:04But choreographer and director Joey McNally said the musical's exploration of racism,
02:09cultural discord and a fear of what's different is still painfully pertinent today.
02:15And finally, the weather.
02:16Today's high across the UAE will be 27 degrees Celsius, dropping to 22 degrees at night.
02:23That's all for now.
02:24Thanks for watching.
