00:00Good day, welcome to the Gulf News Update for Tuesday, August 22.
00:07Here are the top stories at this hour.
00:09President His Highness Sheikh Khalifa bin Zayed Al Nahyan has issued a federal decree
00:14law on excise tax, paving the way for introduction of excise tax on selected products.
00:20The new law comes ahead of the planned introduction of excise tax from the fourth quarter of this
00:25year.
00:26As per Federal Decree Law No. 7 of 2017, excise tax shall be imposed on excise goods but the
00:34tax rates shall not exceed 200% of the excise price.
00:39Yemen's foreign minister blamed Iran and its support for Houthi-Shiite rebels for causing
00:44the country's civil war and said it can't be part of the solution.
00:49Abdul Malik al-Mughlafi said at a press conference that Iranian weapons are still being smuggled
00:54into Yemen.
00:55Saudi Arabia's UN ambassador, Abdullah al-Mualimi, whose country supports Yemen's internationally
01:00recognised government, had a more direct message.
01:04Iran should get the hell out of the area, period.
01:07India's top court today banned a practice that allows Muslim men to divorce their wives
01:12instantly, ending a long tradition that many women had fiercely opposed.
01:17The Supreme Court ruled that the practice of triple talaq, whereby Muslim men can divorce
01:22their wives by reciting the word talaq or divorce three times, was both unconstitutional
01:28and un-Islamic.
01:29Victims, including Shaira Bano, whose husband used triple talaq to divorce her by letter
01:35in 2015, had approached India's highest court to ask for a ruling.
01:41Filmmaker Gurinder Chadha's partition 1947, the Hindi version of period drama Viceroy's
01:46House, has been banned from releasing in Pakistan, reportedly over misrepresentation
01:52of Muhammad Ali Jinnah.
01:54The British film director of Sikh origin, known for her movie Bended Like Beckham, whose
01:59mother grew up in Rawalpindi, went back to trace her roots and document events that led
02:04to the partition.
02:06And finally, the weather.
02:07Today's high across the UAE will be 45 degrees Celsius, dropping to 32 degrees at night.
02:13That's all for now.
