The Public Accounts Committee (PAC) will conduct public hearings for the first time to address rising medical insurance premiums and private healthcare costs.

PAC chairman Datuk Mas Ermieyati Samsudin said that the first session will be held at the AC Marriott Hotel in Bukit Jambul, Penang, on Feb 14, followed by a second session at the Parliament building in Kuala Lumpur on Feb 21.

00:00The Ministry of Health and Social Welfare has also taken into account that the increase in unregulated prices in the private hospital sector, premium insurance and its impact on the public health system.
00:18The PEC welcomes the government's interim steps, led by Prime Minister Anwar Ibrahim and Malaysia's Prime Minister, to halt the increase in premium insurance.
00:29However, the long-term solution must also be studied.
00:34The PEC would like to assist the government to draft a private health care reform through a comprehensive proceeding with all stakeholders, including obtaining views and feedback from the public in various levels.
00:53Therefore, for the first time, the PEC will hold a public hearing on the increase in premium health insurance payments, private hospital charges and the impact on public health under the Ministry of Finance, Ministry of Health and the Bank of Malaysia.
01:12Through this public hearing, the views of all parties will be heard openly and will be included in the PEC report before it is presented in the parliament.
01:27After the public hearing, the PEC will hold a closed proceeding under Article 85 of the National Assembly Regulations.
01:37The PEC would like to assist the government to draft a private health care reform through a comprehensive proceeding with all stakeholders, including obtaining views and feedback from the public in various levels.
