00:00All these successes were through my contacts from my hobbies, from my friends, from treating people well.
00:10I first came to Dubai on holiday in 1997.
00:16So I came out on holiday with no expectations, went desert driving,
00:21and while I was out in the desert I met some interesting people.
00:25One of them invited me around to see his business.
00:28My intention was to become a manager of some description because that was as far as I saw what I considered success.
00:35And I said to myself, Phil if you're not a manager by the age of 30, which was two years after that, then I'd go home.
00:44And pretty much within the first couple of weeks I actually started my first business which was a salsa dance business.
00:53I'd been teaching salsa in the UK prior to coming to the UAE.
00:56I stayed with this company for about five years and it was a great experience.
01:00I worked in real estate for five years and at the same time also opened another business which was selling kite surfing equipment and teaching kite surfing.
01:10So I was in that industry for another five years.
01:12At the end of that time I was introduced to a networking group and within no time at all they were asking me to take a leadership role
01:21where I would build these groups and train them in the art of networking.
01:26And what I realised when I joined this networking group was I'd been networking the whole time.
01:32All these successes were through my contacts from my hobbies, from my friends, from treating people well.
01:41By doing a good job I was getting referred and meeting great people.
01:45Fast forward a couple of years to 2008 and I was introduced to a company called Ascentive.
01:51That's really where my journey started.
01:53I suddenly found myself speaking on global stages all around the world.
01:59I've written five books of which three are international bestsellers.
02:05And the interesting thing is I failed English language and English literature at school.
02:10I always chuckle the fact that I have a number of bestselling books.
02:14But of course if we want to have a successful business we need to learn to do things that we're not necessarily good at.
02:22Until the times when we can pay somebody else to do it for us.
02:26So I also used to be too scared to speak, to do public speaking.
02:30I used to hide away when people invited me to speak.
02:34And now I stand on a stage and my biggest group to date is nearly 4,000 people and I love it.
02:39When I look back at my journey from just looking for a job as an account manager and maybe a manager.
02:46To owning three or four businesses on a couple of continents.
02:50The only reason I got here, and you can't say luck, is because the people I was surrounded with.
02:59The people I met during my journey who pushed me, challenged me, supported me.
03:05Who were more successful than me.
03:06And what that enabled me to do was see what was possible.
03:10To help them, they would help me.
03:13I think one of the things that makes the UAE particularly, and obviously Dubai is my home, so unique.
03:21Is that so many of us are risk takers just by being here.
03:25I think with that, if you've got the right mindset, comes a lot of opportunity.
03:30And we can learn from everybody.
03:31And we can learn from everybody.
03:33From the security guard in the building, to the CEO in the biggest international corporation.
03:40As long as we're open to accepting the fact we don't know it all, and we can learn from everybody.
03:44The more you contribute to other people's success and journey, the more people are going to contribute to yours.
03:50It's so much easier to be successful surrounded by the right people, rather than trying to do it all on your own.
03:58Because if you try and do it all on your own, it just costs you more money.
04:02And you may work fast, but you often work a lot harder.
04:06And I think that's what Dubai offers.
04:08Possibility. As long as you approach this place with the right mindset.
