00:00Fantastic match once again. Another match going to the wire. Mumbai were expected to bounce back.
00:14Hello everyone. Welcome to Straight Bad with Golf News and Mr Cricket UAE. That is Anish Sarjan.
00:20We are here to discuss today's match which is Mumbai crashing to their fifth defeat in the IPL.
00:26Along with me we have Shailendra and Satish to discuss today's match.
00:33Before that over to Anish to take us through today's match. Hello Shyam, hello Satish, hello Shailendra
00:40and hello to all the lovely people of Golf News. Fantastic match once again. Another match going
00:45to the wire. Mumbai were expected to bounce back but I'm afraid the nerves got to them and in the
00:52Punjab Kings were deserved winners. They won by 12 runs but you have to see that the pressure
00:58of getting the two points got to Mumbai and that is what that might be hurting Mumbai now.
01:04Pretty much it was a pressure situation. Shailendra, tell us what went wrong with
01:09Mumbai today. I mean the chase got off to a bad start and finally they were back in the chase and
01:16things didn't go right from the beginning, isn't it?
01:19I think, yeah, of course, Rohit got out in the initial stage. Then even, you know, two runouts.
01:28There were two major runouts which was really bad, you know, for Mumbai. That's where I think
01:34they lost the game, you know. I mean Tilak was really, he was doing good. He was hitting the ball well
01:40and he got run out. There was a mistake but then one run out then Pollard should have actually,
01:48you know, taken more caution but, you know, he wanted to take the second run and that's
01:54where he got run out. So, these two runouts I'm sure changed the game.
02:00Satish, that is when the chase happened now. What Shailendra was referring to was
02:05when the chase happened but Mumbai were not really in the match right from the beginning,
02:10isn't it? Their attack was toothless and they couldn't really control the scoring
02:14in the first 10 overs. Absolutely, Shyam. They have been leaking runs all the matches. If you
02:20look at the bowling has been absolutely probably one of the weakest in this year's IPL. I would
02:25say they have not been able to control Bumrah out of sorts or maybe too much reliance on Bumrah. So,
02:31he was not able to get those wickets. Having said that and I would still go to say that the biggest
02:38problem that Mumbai is facing is in the batting because if Punjab can score 199 and I'm sure with
02:45the Mumbai batting they should be able to score 200 but the biggest problem I would say is the
02:51form of Rohit Sharma and though he has played some good shots today, I would say his footwork
02:57was absolutely lacking and I think in my opinion he is just catching up with them. So, I'm more
03:04worried about India's now World Cup than what it is right now with Mumbai because
03:11I'm quite afraid about his form and his timing. He was not getting his rhythm at all. So,
03:20had he been there, had he gone like maybe 10 overs, 8 overs, 10 overs, old Rohit Sharma
03:26which I always love to watch. He is one of the best that India has produced but
03:31he was little at sea, I would say today. Not a very bad wicket. It was seeming, yes.
03:38But the ball was also nicely coming on to the bat and he was beaten up for the pace and got out
03:44well, well bowled to Rabada. Let's leave out India and let's stay with the IPL.
03:50Okay, for Rohit Sharma aside, that Deval Brevis produced a stunner, isn't it? How did you like that?
03:56Oh, it was jaw-dropping. One over to be very honest when he spanked a good leg spinner for
04:04four sixes and on one boundary and made Rahul Chahar totally clueless and all were cleaning.
04:10It's not that they were slogs. He just had the ball in the slot and he posted them right into
04:15the stadium and the short ball also he pulled it well. So, you have to give credit to this youngster.
04:20I believe he's 19. They talk him as the future AB de Villiers and he showed glimpses of it
04:25and to be very honest with that over it felt that Mumbai are back on track but his dismissal led to
04:32the run out of Tilak and then Pollard's run out and then Mumbai was always playing the
04:36catch-him-up game. I know Surya Kumar Yadav is a big player but when finishing off games,
04:41when chasing, I still have my doubts over it. Shailendra, two 19-year-olds rescuing Mumbai,
04:50that was a pretty sight, wasn't it? Tilak Verma and Brevis, when they were there,
04:57Mumbai was very much in the game really. But again, 19-year-olds, they're pretty immature too.
05:03After having the match into their control, after having been dropped, they again went for a big
05:09shot and got behind. So, that immaturity also was partly responsible in such a nervy game.
05:16Yes. Actually, what I thought was… Usually, this is like football coaches, how they
05:28try and send the message to the players. IPL is something similar. The coach is always talking.
05:36We see that he's giving instructions. So, at this stage, he should have got an instruction to slow
05:42down because the overs were there and the runs were within their reach. So, they should have
05:50just, instead of going all out, they should have had a controlled batting and then they should
05:57have planned it. But they just went on hitting, they just went on running and getting out. So,
06:04I'm sure the management also has to play a role in such situations.
06:13Absolutely. But the thing is, two 19-year-olds, that means, Mumbai will have a very good team
06:19next year as well. And the year after that, because these two guys will serve them well
06:24in the future and they can only get better. Yeah. But Satish…
06:28Their problem… Okay.
06:30Sorry. The problem is the bowling, which is really ineffective. I mean, you can't
06:36expect to win a game with Thampi or Unadkat. I mean, just look at the average 12 runs
06:46they have given Thampi. So, I feel that they need to get their bowling department
06:53more stronger. I mean, they need to rework on their bowling department.
06:58You're bang on. Because the last year, they had Trent Boult and year before last also,
07:03they had James Patterson as well as Nathan Colton-Nile. But this, they don't have anybody.
07:10And they have bought Geoff Rarcher, who will be available only next year. So, Satish, five games
07:19in a row. Do you think the IPL campaign 2022 is over for Mumbai Indians?
07:26No, Shyam. If you look at the point difference, it's only six points. That means three victories.
07:31And there are nine games. Even I would say from here on, which is extremely difficult. Because
07:36just now I was watching… Or rather, I reconfirmed it. Unadkat is coming at number seven. So,
07:43basically, you have six players batters. And of which, two or three are out of form. So,
07:49it's going to be extremely difficult for Mumbai. But still, I would say every single team is in
07:55with a chance. Because the point difference is very small. And if there are more surprises and
08:02there are reversals, then it could still be there. But that is possible. The mathematical chance is
08:08possible. But will Mumbai be able to do it? I would say probably 20% at best. I wouldn't give
08:15them more than that. The form they have. Anil, do you think Mumbai can bounce back?
08:22Because mathematically, yes. Because if they win eight out of the nine games, still,
08:28they are with a mathematical chance. Yeah. To be very honest, it looks very unlikely.
08:34You see, the captain has to lead from the front. And Bumrah has to gather more wickets. The average
08:38wickets, what they have got in these five matches is four. Which is alarming. When you are bowling
08:44first or batting first, it's alarming. And today, they should have won the game. But the pressure.
08:50So, it's that pressure. And I'll be very honest now. It's easy for us, sitting as armchair experts,
08:54to say, why didn't they bat first? But when you are in a pressure game, you better bat first. And
08:59Pune is one ground where out of the five matches, three games have been won by batting first,
09:04including today's game. So, these are all things which we can say after the game.
09:08But sometimes, you need to think ahead of the game and put up the total and put Punjab into
09:13pressure. But I'm afraid Mumbai's year seems to get over this year.
09:20All right. That's all about Mumbai. Let's give some due credit to Punjab.
09:27My good luck from the front, isn't it? One of the things that really struck me was,
09:31as soon as... Brevis took 29 runs off Tahir in the first over. But as soon as Brevis is over,
09:39he brought Tahir back and he applied the break. So, some good captaincy there.
09:44Oh, yes. Sometimes, you know what? When a bowler goes for runs, he is under pressure.
09:51But after the dismissal of Brevis, he bowled a fantastic over to Surya Kumar Yadav. Almost
09:56got his edge twice or got him stumped. But at least he could redeem himself. Otherwise,
10:02had they lost this game, all the blame would have come on Rahul Chahar for losing this. Because 29
10:07runs being hit by an 18 or a 19-year-old goal. And clean hitting. Let's accept it. He had no clue
10:13how to bowl to him. He had no idea how to bowl to him. He was sweating.
10:18But Shyam, just to... Sorry to interrupt out of turn. I think Mayank did most of it quite well.
10:25But one little trick he missed was, Rabada was bowling when Brevis came in. And if you look at,
10:31he's an under-19 player. And Rabada is an experienced, one of the premier bowlers of
10:35South Africa. He could have probably bowled Rabada one more over and played on the mind of
10:41Brevis. So that you could have put him under pressure or you could have got his wicket.
10:44I think that's a little trick he missed there.
10:48I think that is a trick you see. Most of these inexperienced captains make the same mistake.
10:54I mean, Anish always talks about Rahul. Rahul seems to be the master at missing
10:59these kind of tricks, really. I would say he's the best captain in this IPL,
11:04who has kept Stoinis in the dugout. When he's your retained player and he sends him at number
11:10seven and the match comes so close. I salute his captainship.
11:15Anish, I will not blame Rahul completely. What about the rest of the management? They
11:21are equally responsible, isn't it? Like Sharindra was saying, the management is also equally
11:25responsible for this. I know. But you are the captain. You have retained him. And I know
11:30from inside sources, he was the guy who wanted Stoinis. And after he got bowled by Trent Bould,
11:37he probably was still thinking about his wicket and forgot that there is a guy sitting in the
11:41dugout. And I am wondering, he'll come now. He sends Gautam. He sends that Pandya brothers,
11:47one of the brothers, Kunal. And then one more batsman went ahead of him. I don't know who.
11:54And he comes back in the 16th over. That was baffling.
11:56Holder. Holder came ahead of him.
11:58Holder. Holder. So, you know what? This cannot be accepted. Come on, you are playing
12:03high-level, intense wicket. Why are you holding that batsman back?
12:06You mean to say you are scared of Trent Bould?
12:12Okay. So, Shailendra, what do you think of Punjab's chances? I mean,
12:17this is three wins from five games. It's pretty decent, actually.
12:22Yes. They should be one of the contenders for top four.
12:30It's quite tough because we see there are six teams with six points. And then Delhi and
12:45Hyderabad also with four points. So, it's tough. But Punjab, I'm sure if they play the way they
12:52have done it today, because in the batting also, Mayank has scored well. Apart from Mayank, even
13:01Dhawan, he has been scoring quite well. So, if he continues like this, I'm sure they will be
13:08in the top bracket, top four bracket. I wish I could agree with you. But I think
13:14their bowling is slightly undercooked. What do you say, Sajid?
13:19I would say it's not bad, Shyam. I would say it's there. Maybe one bowler,
13:25if they change the combination, maybe they can work. Because almost out of the five bowlers,
13:30four are quite experienced. Another brave move by Mayank that he again gave Smith the last over,
13:36despite getting hit in the previous game. Having said that, but another positive point for
13:44Punjab is more than the form of Dhawan. Dhawan is one guy, if he gets into form,
13:49he doesn't let it go. He continues. He keeps going on and on. So, I would say, he will be the biggest
13:57key for Punjab to go further this year. And probably I would be surprised if he goes on to
14:03collect the orange cap. Because he is one player who will not let his form down. He keeps going.
14:10He will continue for a longer time.
14:14Before we wrap up, Odin Smith in the last over. That was brave or was it foolish?
14:23Now you can say it was brave. But to be very honest, two tail-enders playing,
14:27I would have bought the leg spinner Livingstone. Because it's not easy to hit the spinners out
14:31of the park. And mind you, after the first six men, I still felt that he would choke
14:37because he was under pressure. And that six was hit by Unadkat, who is not a batter at all.
14:42That's what I'm saying. So, that nightmare. He said in the post-match that I was in the
14:47same situation in four days' time. But again, it was a brave step. And to be very honest,
14:52Punjab are doing a mistake by not bringing Raja Paksha. Whether they drop Odin Smith or whether
14:57they drop Johnny Bairstow, it's a big call. But Raja Paksha has done nothing wrong. He was
15:02scoring 50, 40, 30 in quick time. What is his fault for him to be sitting out? Just because
15:08you want Johnny Bairstow? Doesn't make sense. I'm completely with you. And I think it's more
15:13of star value of Bairstow rather than the efficiency of Banuka. That guy was giving
15:19them a start of 60-70 in the power play. Okay, he might fail in one or two games. But you got
15:24to go and back him. And now when you get him, there will be a gun on his head that no one has
15:28to score runs. Correct. I agree. Completely agree. Because he has to be there irrespective of whom
15:34they drop. Whether it is Odin Smith or Bairstow, it doesn't matter really. But he has to be in the
15:40team. And he, as coming out of one drop, he has been doing a phenomenal job. Now,
15:48that's it for today. But let's hear about the competition.
15:52Oh, yes. Every day we have to predict the winner. And it's very, very difficult, mind you guys. If
15:58you are a true cricket fan, you still can't get that right winner. Every day there is a different
16:02winner. So we hope that you predict the right winner tomorrow. It's Gujarat versus… You're
16:08talking about… Gujarat is playing… Rajasthan, I think. Rajasthan. So the team which wins will
16:14go on the top. But you need to predict the winner and you walk away with a lovely apparel kit,
16:18which is a track t-shirt and a cap. It's all yours and a digital subscription from Gulf News.
16:24Okay, that leaves us that. Now it brings us the prediction time for us. Shailendra,
16:29you go first. Tomorrow Rajasthan Royals plays Gujarat title. Who's your pick?
16:33I'll go with Rajasthan Royals.
16:36All right. Sadesh?
16:40I would go with Gujarat.
16:42Yeah, that's not surprising. Anish, have you noticed that Rajasthan is never Sadesh's pick?
16:48One thing I'll tell you.
16:51Two things. One, Sanju's captaincy. And second is, he scores big in one game in a year.
16:59And that's about it. After that, you expect him to keep continuing.
17:02Yes, that's true. Only two games he played.
17:05You only expect. One big knock he'll play. And that's about it.
17:08He's already played that.
17:10But I'll tell you, they have one of the best batsmen in one day in T20 cricket. I watched him actually.
17:19Who is that?
17:19Josh Butler.
17:21Yes, it is. Josh Butler, he is a treat to watch.
17:25But he's been there for so many years.
17:27Absolutely.
17:28RR has been coming in the bottom.
17:30Only he scores. He scores.
17:31Yeah, but the problem is, they don't have a bowling to back him up, bro.
17:35Correct.
17:37Anish, what's your pick?
17:38Anyway, I would also back RR.
17:41Okay, we have RR.
17:42That's the only team which has been defending scores. Out of five matches, out of four matches,
17:46they have defended in three. Sanju.
17:49See, RR has always been like Punjab Kings. They are always flattered and deceived.
17:53They always promise more than what they deliver.
17:56But between Gujarat and RR, I will go with RR.
17:59So, Rajasthan, it is from three of us. And Satish, the eternal RR hater, is backing RR.
18:05No, but again, Shyam, that is only half of it.
18:08Gujarat has done well. And I am quite happy with the way the Pandya has
18:12done as a captain and as a player.
18:15So, I think he has shown a different genre of himself in the last few games.
18:22I absolutely agree. He is definitely batting.
18:24But I don't know whether that is good for Gujarat or not.
18:26You will know it in the later half of the tournament.
18:30But that's it for us from today.
