PH curling team hopes to inspire Filipinos with Asian Winter Games golden breakthrough
The Philippine Men’s Curling Team clinched a historic gold in the 9th Asian Winter Games after besting out Asia’s powerhouse South Korea, Japan, and China.
As ironic as it sounds as the Philippines is a tropical country yet managed to flourish in the ice stage, curler Alan Frei shared that this win is all for the Filipino dreamers and a reminder to do what is impossible.
“We believe we can inspire young Filipinos and Filipinas to pursue their dreams. This is just the beginning of Curling in the Philippines,” Frei who only had two years of experience in Curling said.

00:00Quickly, let me introduce the team very quickly, that you know who's here.
00:04As mentioned already very quickly, Jessica Pfister on the very right of your side,
00:09she's the wife of Mark and she's our coach and she's pregnant and so the next generation of
00:17curling is already set in stone. Then to Jessica's right, we have Christian Haller, he's the third.
00:25So Mark and Christian are the back end, so these are the strategic people behind the sport.
00:31They're making decisions and Enrico and I, we're just executing them. And then we have on the right
00:38Mark Pfister. Mark is our captain, so he plays the most important stones at the end. These stones
00:45are called the hammer and they're really, really important. Then we have Menjo, our president and
00:50our alternate, as mentioned already before, at the start of the whole movement. Then we have Enrico
00:56here to the left. Enrico and I, we are building the front end. We are mostly sweeping, we play all the
01:03stones and my name is Alan. I do the talking, not because I like talking, because I'm the worst in
01:09the team, so I need to have a job. Here on the right, my side, this is Miggy Gutierrez, he's our coach
01:18and he helped us tremendously on the whole process. This movement grew into that we're
01:24sitting here as the first Southeast Asian country with the gold medal in the Asian Winter Games,
01:32which is absolutely incredible. And for us as a team, our job is to create success, because success
01:38is building bridges for the next generation. We won't stop here, we will go on. Our goal is to go
01:46to the Olympics and we want to even go further. We are documenting the whole process, that's why Dan
01:53flew in from Switzerland just today. The goal is to have a Netflix or Disney Plus series where you
02:00can see everything and we can spread around the world the Filipino pride. And thanks again from
02:07the whole team, from the bottom of our hearts. Thank you.
