00:00Prime Minister Modi is set to embark on a state visit to the United States later this
00:08month. A state visit is a rare honor and the last Indian leader to do so was Dr. Manmohan
00:14Singh when he was Prime Minister. Now, whether it's the United States or France or the UK,
00:19we're increasingly seeing the West wanting to increase their engagement with India. And
00:23that's despite the fact that India has taken a position that's very contrary to this on
00:28issues like Russia and Ukraine. Now, that's because these countries see India as an important
00:34counterweight to China. As China becomes more aggressive in the Indo-Pacific, the Indian
00:39market is also important for the world economy. And that's why the US, for example, is really
00:44laying out the red carpet and willing to overlook controversies surrounding democracy, democratic
00:49backsliding in India or human rights issues. Even though just weeks ago, there was a State
00:54Department report that was strongly critical of the Indian government on the treatment
00:58of minorities in the country. We saw the Ministry of External Affairs strongly hit back, calling
01:04that report biased and motivated. And within days, White House officials going out of their
01:08way to say that India was a vibrant democracy. It's very clear that the US wants to engage
01:14much more with India and India too is willing to engage with these countries but on its
01:20own terms.
