Dubai International Airport (DXB) will be getting a Dh6 billion to Dh10 billion makeover in the next 5-7 years, and reinforce its status as the world’s busiest international hub.

The project will involve launching new commercial partnerships, adding lounges, creating more circulation space, reconfiguring the remote gate operations, and investing in new technology to transform DXB into a full-scale ‘smart’ airport, according to Dubai Airports’ CEO Paul Griffiths.

00:00The short term goal is to invest significant amounts of money in expanding the operation
00:22at DXB.
00:23We've got some programs here to extend the number of stands, to increase the passenger
00:29processing capacity here, as well as improving the quality of the passenger lounges and the
00:36quality of the service delivery here.
00:38So there's a significant amount of refurbishment going on at DXB over the next few years to
00:43keep our growth story alive in the short term.
00:51We've launched a number of different commercial partnerships over the last few months.
00:57We actually have got the first airport store for Pangaea, which is the clothing brand that
01:04is a fully sustainable supply chain.
01:07And they've also got an initiative to start saving the lives of bees around the world
01:13which we're participating in.
01:14So that's a landmark thing.
01:18We've also got a number of retail initiatives that we're launching over the next few months,
01:23partnerships with external retailers, which I'm sure will be very significant.
01:28The idea is to keep refreshing the product that our customers see every day to make sure
01:33that we're always in line with trends and are performing at the best possible rate per
01:40square meter that we can generate within the airport.
01:48There's always things that we're looking at.
01:50We've done a number of those initiatives over the years, but what we're doing now is
01:55replanning all of our internal spaces to create better circulation areas, to create more space
02:02for people.
02:03And one thing you will see is the co-location of restaurants and bars and coffee shops with
02:10seating areas in bigger spaces to make it more comfortable for our passengers.
02:16What we don't want to do is have that segregation where people have to grab a coffee and then
02:20go and sit in a gate lounge behind glass.
02:24What we're going to do is have many more open gate rooms so people can circulate freely
02:29to and from the gates and then go and shop and dine before they travel without a problem
02:37of getting into a closed gate room, which is not a sort of contemporary experience that
02:43we really want.
