00:00We all know that gun violence is a huge problem in the United States. In fact, it's been compared
00:07to an epidemic, which is why the recent move by law enforcement authorities to actually
00:13hold parents responsible for children who are doing shootings, I think is a welcome
00:20step. In the first case of its kind, the father of a young 14 year old boy who shot dead four
00:26people at his school has also been charged with murder. And this is setting a new precedent
00:32when it comes to what exactly parental responsibility is. In this particular case in the US state
00:37of Georgia, what is even more shocking is that the young boy had been questioned many
00:42months ago for posting online threats about doing a school shooting. He had been questioned
00:48by the police. And even after that, the father saw it fit to gift his son a rifle. And that
00:54is the gun that the child used to shoot dead two teachers and two classmates in his school.
01:00In the US, we can see that this is a very divisive issue. You have powerful gun lobbies
01:05like the National Rifle Association, who've been pushing to ensure that there is not any
01:11kind of difficulty for people to get hold of guns. And the laws unfortunately vary from
01:16state to state. So in some states, while it's very difficult to get a gun license in others,
01:22you don't even need a license actually to technically own a gun. That's how crazy it
01:27actually is. And therefore, when it comes to school shootings, when it comes to shootings
01:32by teenagers, those who are under the age of 18, this may actually be a step by holding
01:37parents responsible that will hopefully ensure that parents will be more careful with the
01:43weapons that they have in their home, that they take more responsibility for their children.
01:48And perhaps that is a drastic step that America needs right now to curb gun violence.
